Constant Bumping

Archive: 8 posts

For those who don't know, bumping is to comment on an old thread, bringing back topics that have most likely been fully discussed.

Knowing that, the title leaves the rest self-explanatory: It's here, it's bad, and it happens constantly. lol.

-----

Couldn't this be prevented simply? When you comment on an old thread it can say:

Are you sure you want to comment on this thread? It has not had any comments for a long time, so make sure you have significant changes or discoveries to add if you want to 'bump' it.

A similar solution and notion I want to comment about: Why not make the site's "Rules & Regulations" guide mandatory to read before you become a member? It explains many things, like bumping.

Good idea wih the popup, i'm not so sure about the rules though. Do you typically read the terms of service before signing up for something? The same thing would happen with rules for the most part.

However, there are some cases that necroposting does have a purpose. Like when a creator announces a project, abandons it, and then takes it up after a good period of time. Or some older stickied threads which were created long ago.

I do get your point though, new members come in from time to time and bump old threads, but they tend to learn from their mistakes, and i don't see any sort of real issue here if they stop after their initial offense(s).

The popup would be a good idea it would stop new members scrolling through page after page of levels commenting on what they think. New users to forums don't know how to see when a comment was last posted so they won't know it hasn't been posted in in over a year. I also agree with Burnvictim42 in the fact that when singing up for something i scroll to the bottom of the page and click accept, even my dad does it people don't tend to read these things.2010-03-15 11:10:00

So if you're against bumping old threads, then why post this:-

I wasn't implying that at least i wasn't trying to i was just saying that people who had the game last year this time already have it, so i don't see another need for it.

EDIT: i meant no need for another thread about it.

Make your mind up.

I have no problem at all bumping old threads in level showcase. Its nice for creators to see that people are still playing their work. I think it should be encouraged in the showcase forums.2010-03-16 08:43:00

I agree with this, how else are people who are new to the world of forums meant to know you're not meant to bump threads. I remember the first time I ever joined a forum, I bumped a thread and everyone got really angry at me, I didn't even realise what I'd done since I didn't know what "bump" meant.2010-03-16 18:28:00

A popup doesn't force them to not bump... It just tells new members what a bump is and let's them know that under most conditions it's wrong.2010-03-17 02:50:00

I think this should be seriously considered. Not because bumbing is extremely bad or a huge problem but it is a problem. Some bumps by general ignorance and some do happen by acciedent and I understand that, so as Incinerator22 said the popup doesn't force members not to bump but it does inform them of what bumping is and why it is generally unacceptable. Not all new forum members will read the rules of the site and not all members will know what bumping is (I didn't when I first joined) so a popup could be very useful, as long as it is concise and gets to point as quickly as possible while still having a friendly tone. If it's too long people wont read it.
