A Biased Email Reply/Angered

Archive: 37 posts

Hey everyone. I just wanted to bring this to everyone's attention.

Something happened recently to a friend of mine that really really upset me, and angered me. Right now I am keeping this underwraps in the expert portion of the LBP community because I know they will protest, and it's a rather large portion of the community, 5% to 10%. But I can mention it here. Now I am not going to go and bash MM or act irrationally.

My friend had sent a message to MM asking if they could or would ever fix the hit box on the spikes in the game so that you actually die from hitting the spikes, because the hit box is larger than the visible graphic of the spikes.

And when he mentioned what their reply was I was stunned. He hadn't told anyone before, just me. Then he asked me not to tell anyone for fear that he'd be banned. So I'm not going to give his name.

Anyways, MM's reply was "We don't care. We checked your profile. Hard levels only hurt the community."

I couldn't believe it. At first I thought he might of been lying, but he isn't the type to lie about that. I feel extremely disrespected and hurt. That is a bias and unprofessional reply aimed at an entire community. I feel as though a company I looked up to has just closed the door in my face.

Or maybe MM is blind to how many players make up the expert community. No company in their right mind that is aware of an expert community, and a decent sized portion of the total LBP community would say something like that.

If I were to go and mention that to the expert community, which will spread from one of us to another, that will cause a protest and backlash. So I'm trying to avoid that. Their reply goes against what LBP is, a game for everyone, with all different kinds of levels, genres, difficulties, etc.

A normal response might have been something along the lines of "We're sorry, but we don't have any plans on fixing the spikes. They aren't that big of a deal in the average level. If you're going to make hard levels that use them, then plan around it." or something similar.

But the response given instead is an outrage. I always loved LBP and thought of MM as cool people and loyal to fans, but after that I feel little respect for MM.

At this point I don't know what I'll do, but comments like that aren't right. If I find out after this that my friend gets banned, or I get banned for revealing MM's reply, there will be problems. I have done nothing wrong nor has my friend, except mention an unjust reply that puts down a good sized portion of the LBP community.

It's comments like MM's reply that hurt the community, and anyone familiar with gaming at all knows there are expert communities for every game out there, which are players that love masochistic challenges. Maybe MM needs to do their research before making biased comments like that.

As for now I have no intentions of spreading the word about this through our community, but hopefully MM is reading this and learns to be respectful to all of LBP's fan base, and not just a bias for the easy goers. Everyone is a player regardless of the difficulty you prefer. Most companies respect their entire fan base, just as long as those fans don't violate rules like nudity, vulgarity, etc in levels.

EDIT: MM if you're reading this and that reply was from an MM imposter, then I apologize as we were tricked. But if that was a reply you know was from your staff, then please reconsider how you reply to fans in the future and respect your entire fan base, not just a preferred minority.

Sounds suspicious, Could he have maybe private messaged one of those fake Molecules PSN's? Ask how he contacted them.2010-03-14 21:32:00

Yeah, I'll ask him. I thought he said email, but I'll ask him when he's on next.

Either way, it isn't him lying, so it was either MM or an MM fake.

Well, you cant go blaming ALL of MM for one email.
Its not like all of them read the message, had an epic meeting, and discussed the way to reply to the message. MM is a rather nice company, and besides, it couldve been Sony, not MM since they are married now.

As others have said, this sounds rather unlike MM. Their official line is that the variety of levels that can be produced within the game is a great thing and exactly what they want from the community, ofr everyoe to beable to create whatever they desire (within any legal requirements). Check what method your friend used to contact them, and who at MM he contacted. You may also want to drop a quick PM / email to spaff or sam (both at once tends to work), they sometimes take a little while to get back but they are generally helpful.

On a side note, I doubt they would be "fixing" the hit box on spikes. I agree that it is wrong, but as it's one of those potentially game-changing / level-breaking things they could do, I very much doubt they would (and also don't believe they should), doesn't hurt to ask though (or at least it shouldn't )

No way was this an Mm response.

Firstly, no official reply from any game developer would start with "We don't care." Of course they care, it's their game. They may have no plans to change it or even listen to community suggestions, but they wouldn't say it like that.

The bit about "We checked your profile" makes no sense in the context of what was being asked. Why would they need to check the profile of someone who was only making a suggestion?

And lastly, considering Mm recently spotlighted OH NO!!! THE PRINCESS!!!, I really don't think they would have anything against hard levels. Not to mention that "Hard levels only hurt the community" is contradicting their statement that the spikes don't need to be made easier. If the hitbox was reduced it would mean LESS hard levels, not more.

Either your friend is lying/bending the turth, or contacted someone who wasn't Mm.

do you know the guy personally? Because it could be that he is lying. This really doesn't sound like MM to me, but they are human to so I could be wrong. It could also be a fake this is hard to spot as they replace the L's with i's (I,l).2010-03-14 22:47:00

I know what you all mean. I thought the same thing. MM is not like that.

But I plan on looking into it. It was probably a fake.

@UltimateClay:

Very true. It just came out as the staff represents the company.

@rtm223:

I am certainly investigating. As for the spikes, my friend asked, not me. It would be nice if they were fixed, but I know that won't happen for reasons you pointed out.

@SPONGMONKEY56:

Believe me, he wasn't lying. He had no reason to. I'm thinking and hoping it was a non-MM source posing as MM.

@Nuclearfish:

He probably contacted a source that wasn't MM, but you can never be sure about anything. Any given thing can change someone's attitude at any moment, at least if they're human. But I don't want to believe that was MM, which is why I was stunned. As for OH NO THE PRINCESS, I'll check that out. But I have never played a single level in spotlight that qualified as a truly hard level, like the ones you find in the expert community. I played Giga Cannon recently from spotlight and it was very easy, aceable easy. But thank you for that suggestion. I'll try that level, sounds fun. It may suprise me. ^_^

Like has been said, I wouldn't expect this from any game developer's, but MM? They're possibly the nicest, friendliest, and funniest game developer's I've seen. And I thought fake Spaff and Tom were banned? Because they should be, if people are trying to get in contact with MM and get a reply like that, well, they would just feel like what you and your friend feel. And don't worry, if you get banned we'll spam teh cool pages with "ZOMG REAL WATERZ AND BOMBZ OMG!!!!!111!!ONE H4H!!" until they un-ban you 2010-03-14 23:32:00

Nope, OH NO THE PRINCESS is not nearly as hard as the expert community levels.... it is only hard as regards more "mainstream" levels. Actually, I find it about as hard as the super mario brother games....

However, I also had an experience somewhat like this recently... which turned out to be an MM fake. Here was the jist of the conversation:

Jason_Molecule PSN: Excuse me, but is this the "CuzFeeshe" that won the sackie crown?

Me: Yes it is.

Jason_Molecule: There is a boy who is dying of cancer who requested we give him a crown (LittleLyerBoy) (fake name... I don't remember the actual one). However, it would take to long for us to generate the code. Is there any way you could gameshare your crown with him?

Me: I already have a crown, so I never collected the code from the Sackie. So, Spaff should have my code. If this legitimate, you have my permission to retrieve the code from Spaff.

Jason_Molecule: We just checked, and the code has already been received from Spaff.

Me: Tell you what, I'll email Spaff and ask him if that's true.

LittleLyerBoy PSN: I'm sorry, my friend Joey has been trying to get me a crown all week. Maybe you should just play along...

Me: (sending to Jason_Molecule): Your buddy says he doesn't really have cancer. Sounds like a hoax to me.

Jason_Molecule: Ah maan... he shuld hav playyed along. I cn't beleeve he tol you!

The moral:
There are quite a few kids online who are "saying" they are with MM. This is not actually true. This situation is also most definately a hoax.

Is one of the fakes, i can tell.

The people at MM are awesome, and have always been super friendly to any inquiries I've sent them - whether it's a serious matter or not.

I even sent them a letter telling them they were all complete and total idiots once and that I was going come visit them if all my levels weren't on page 1 by tomorrow. They emailed me back and said I would get a limited edition DLC restraining order. Even gevurah22 doesn't have one of those

I think it's pretty safe to say that it's an imposter. Knowing Mm (and their weird, wacky methods >_>), the message your friend recieved is just balogna. Your friend is either playing a joke on you or he's overreacting from a someone's attempt to impersonate someone.

I bet ya that by now, the imposter has been swiftly dealt with by Sony and is now sitting on a nice, warm IP ban.

I don't think your friend is a lier, and I don't think you are dumb/naive to think what you have. I will sit here and hope that what the others are saying is true about it most likely being a fake.

Personally, I believe that what happened to your friend happened to your friend. I will though try to hold out on passing judgement till I get more facts.

To be honest, if I was Media_Molecule, I wouldn't care either. However, the whole message is kinda iffy. "We checked your profile, hard levels only hurt the community" makes no sense. It's completely irrelevant to the topic at hand. Are you sure your friend wasn't just telling you the "they might as well have said this" version of the email?2010-03-16 03:06:00

Hey everyone.

Sorry I haven't gotten anymore facts yet.

The friend in question hasn't been on the PS3 since before I posted this, which is unusual. But I have already messaged him with more specific questions.

Also, my friend did not just bring this up to me, like a lie or trick. It came up after something I said. And even then he just isn't the type to lie about something like that, especially after his friend (me) said they were going to post a thread about it at LBPC and contact MM. He was POd about the reply, since he was positive it was from MM. He didn't expect me to go post about it or he wouldn't have mentioned it.

I believe it was a fake, but I have to wait until their next log-in for a response.

I sent a message to one little boy telling him he's getting a crown for his "30 Trophies in 3 seconds" level.... he's still waiting....2010-03-18 18:58:00

Like everyone else, I don't believe Media Molecule would say something like this. If they really did think like this: "We don't care. We checked your profile. Hard levels only hurt the community.", they probably would just not have replied at all.

Let us know when/if your friend replies!

Okay, my friend replied to my curiosity.

He said he contacted MM from an email link on the official site. He swears up and down it was MM. He says he might have been tricked, but he doesn't see how as it was the officiall MM site.

Bad news:
He doesn't have the email. He had no reason to keep it since he didn't have any plans of mentioning it for fear of getting banned. He didn't tell me this is why he doesn't have it anymore. He just said he deletes them after he reads them. But since he said that day he mentioned it that he didn't want me saying anything and about the ban fear, then I could see why he didn't need the email.

Therefor, there's nothing more to say or do without that email. I'm stuck inbetween here. I am not going to deny the possibility of it being someone from MM, but the only other possibility of it not being MM is if it was a fake MM site, which had to of been very convincing because my friend is familiar with the real MM site.

Is there a such thing as a fake MM site? He swears it was the MM website, and an email link on the site.

Anyways, nothing more can be done without the evidence, and right now Im not going to put aside the thought that it may have been someone from MM, even though I think I know them well enough to not expect something like that. But at the same time I can't say it was them. Possible fake site.

Well, I'd say accusing MM with absolutely no proof, no email, no actual name of the MM employee, it being totally out of character for MM (who are...adults), AND the fact that MM has had difficult levels as MM picks.... I would say this has "fake" written all over it.

Personally, I don't think it's a matter of being on the fence or off... it just seems like a really bad thread that puts a bad light on MM for no reason and with no proof whatsoever.

I clearly stated there was nothing more to say or do, but then people come in here and suddenly point fingers and leave some offensive messages, because those messages also call me a lier.

@CCubbage:

I forgot, adults aren't capable of saying such things. I am an adult, and so is my friend who I've known for a long time. And MM has never picked a difficult level, maybe advanced levels, but not expert difficulty levels. On the fence is the right place to be, because taking sides isn't right unless one or the other has proof. Also, I never said for sure it was MM, so how is bad light being put on MM? Your response post there was the first one that came across as a fanboy/fangirl type comment, which are people that always think whatever they are a fan of could never be wrong or do this or that.

@UltimateClay:

Pretty obvious my friend is lying? Have you read all my last post? There is not even the slightest hint of a lie or suspicion.

1. He didn't want me telling anyone, for fear of getting banned.
2. He didn't even bring it up to me. It came out in a topic of a conversation I sarted.
3. He isn't the type to lie. He's not even a joker. There was even no reason to lie. I'v known him a long time.

I think it's time for this thread to get locked, it's starting to slowly get into a flame war. You guys shouldn't just assume someone is lying just because they say something you don't agree with. I like Mm, I do, but jumping all over s3xNstilettos just because she is reporting a topic of concern isn't the right way to handle this.

Ummm.... no.

My reply is based on the following:

The entire original post of this thread is heresay.

Spaff told me himself that they are trying to get a handle on all the "Media Molecule" imposters. People create user names with _molecule in them on the PSN (which is the same login to Workshop) and SAY they are MM staff. Then, when they act badly others, who don't have the sense to check their validity, treat the information as gospel. I was personally tricked by one, but directly contacted Spaff about the issue instead of assuming the person was legitimate.

So, the issue I have with this thread is that it perpetuates bad information. And unfortunately, this information then ends up in search engines and could cause ACTUAL damage to Media Molecule..... with no proof that Media Molecule had anything to do with the original messages.

I would hate it if lies were perpetuated about me personally on the internet... then people were on the fence as to whether they were true or not..... based 100% on heresay. I would love for people to give me benefit of the doubt based on my past actions rather than on what someone else posted about me in a forum thread.

I'm not trying to be mean or cause issues.... just think about it. All your friend has to do is approach someone on Workshop and tell them about the reply he received. They WILL have deleted message history and they can deal with the issue. He will NOT be banned.

I not only think this thread should be locked - I think without any kind of proof of validity it should be deleted.
