Server Errors, Help me!

Archive: 47 posts

Is anybody else getting a slew of 'Server Not Found' or 'Internal Server Error' messages? Every other link I click on gives me a server error, and it is right frustrating. Anybody else having the problem, or know of a way to make it stop?

Cheers,
Comph

No, no. Don't worry guys... this started a few days ago. It had been getting worse and worse... to the point of cutting out every 5-10 minutes for about half a minute.2010-03-14 17:19:00

I've been getting server errors in the last few days too but not as frequently as you by the sound of it. Mine are probably happening a couple of times an evening/day.

My browser is Google Chrome.

I don't even know what arrow chat is. I got an internal error (I think the number was about 550…something like that), but I hit refresh and it worked out. -shrug-2010-03-14 18:22:00

My life is plagued by these:

Only here and MNRCentral. Everywhere else is fine.

Could be that CC is doing some things in the background getting chat configured properly and rippling the server.2010-03-14 20:15:00

Noop. Been doing that for a few days now. I've been chatting with him when it happens and he says that is able to use it at the exact same time with no issues.2010-03-14 20:20:00

I've been getting a lot of these today on LBPC, I don't think I've gotten them before today though, but the site has been a bit slow lately.

Edit: Also I've gotten one while posting this reply, lol.

I have had two in the past 5 minutes when replying to posts.

Only problem is then that the new post don't seem to be showing as the latest post in a thread, yet when you go to look at the thread, the latest post is there...

I just had this:

http://img695.imageshack.us/img695/4581/screenshot31410358.png

I ping'd the site to see if it was due to a packet loss causing an incomplete query or just something else on the way to the site, but it seems to be fine. Seems like a hiccup and not much more.

Yep, but only since arrowchat went live. Hardly surprising really. The only way such a program can know whether you have a new incoming message or not, is to frequently poll the server - meaning that the server load has just increased by probably 100 times, and the 500 errors are often the result of an overloaded server.

Okay. I was wrong. It's using a technique called long polling (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Push_technology#Long_polling) (source (http://www.arrowchat.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=169)) so the bottleneck will be on open sockets.

Note that every tab opened by every user is holding open a connection to the server, so you might need to increase apache's MaxClients directive.

I have five tabs open to LBP Central, and...

C:>netstat -n

Active Connections

Proto Local Address Foreign Address State
TCP 192.168.2.25:53298 208.86.184.190:80 ESTABLISHED
TCP 192.168.2.25:53305 208.86.184.190:80 ESTABLISHED
TCP 192.168.2.25:53320 208.86.184.190:80 ESTABLISHED
TCP 192.168.2.25:53350 208.86.184.190:80 ESTABLISHED
TCP 192.168.2.25:53364 208.86.184.190:80 ESTABLISHED
TCP 192.168.2.25:53398 208.86.184.190:80 CLOSE_WAIT

TCP 192.168.2.25:53413 208.86.184.190:80 CLOSE_WAIT

...there are six active connections to the webserver.

Well, this is quite interesting. It seems that Arrowchat is no less taxing than cometchat.

As for your observation, Mnimmo, that is just a byproduct of the errors. When you make a reply, it temporarily resides just below the post you are replying to. When the page refreshes, as it's supposed to, it bumps it to the bottom. So, in your case, as in the case of myself a few times lately, the page didn't refresh, so your post didn't seem to move. When you return to the thread, though, it completely refreshes, and it is shown correctly.

:/

Edit: Haha, not sure what Aya said just there, but I'm gonna stand behind what he said. Yeah! What he said!

Edit2: I see your edits. So, is multiple tabbing killing the server load, then? Excuse my dense-ness in the matter.

So, is multiple tabbing killing the server load, then?

Not necessarily 'load' in the traditional sense, although that fourm post I just linked to on arrowchat's website seems to suggest that there are still some issues to work out.

Basically the webserver has a configuration parameter which limits the total number of connections, because each one uses up memory.

If each tab is holding open one connection for an extended period of time, then all of the forum users are effectively fighting over the few remaining free connections.

The result will be slow-loading pages, pages which don't load at all, and potenially our good old friend, the 500 Internal Server Error, although that's more likely indicative of a problem elsewhere, such as database contention.

This was definitely anticipated, and we are currently tweaking settings to ensure optimal performance. I can't guarantee these will completely go away any time soon, but we are definitely working towards that end as much as possible.2010-03-14 22:49:00

In the interim, is there a way to completely disable the chat on a per-user basis? I can disable JavaScript from running completely, but then certain other aspects of the site refuse to work.

Actually. Doesn't matter. Seems that as long as you keep the chat thing hidden, the connections die off pretty fast.

I was getting that earlier, as if the webserver was down for a while. Is she using an unusual browser?

The option has been added regardless. Just head to the "Forum Settings" section of your "Settings" page, and at the bottom you'll see an option to enable/disable Arrowchat.

I was working on getting the option to disable rotating headers working again. It works now as well.

Alright, I was locked out all last night and again this morning, so I did a little research. It appears that I was having DNS issues, in that when I typed in LBPC's address, my computer wasn't converting it into IP address form correctly, and the page wouldn't load. At least this is what I think the issue was. At any rate, I changed my preferred DNS server to Google Public DNS (http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/), and it worked! Yay.

I don't understand exactly why I had to change DNS servers, but I trust Google, lol, so I think it's all better.

Yeah. I wouldn't trust your browser (particularly if you're using IE) to give you the right reason as to why it ain't working.

If you want to determine if you're having a DNS failure, open up a command prompt (I'm assuming you're running Windows, but if not, then let me know) and do this...

C:>nslookup www.lbpcentral.com
Server: UnKnown
Address: 192.168.2.1

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: lbpcentral.com
Address: 208.86.184.190
Aliases: www.lbpcentral.com

"Non-authoritative" just means that the address is being provided by a DNS cache, rather than hitting an authoritative server, which linux tells me is...

$ host -t ns lbpcentral.com
lbpcentral.com name server ns1.lbpcentral.com.
lbpcentral.com name server ns2.lbpcentral.com.

...but it seems those nameservers don't exist...

$ host ns1.lbpcentral.com
Host ns1.lbpcentral.com not found: 3(NXDOMAIN)
$ host ns2.lbpcentral.com
Host ns2.lbpcentral.com not found: 3(NXDOMAIN)

...which may explain some of the problems.

I was unable to get on for the past 6 or so hours. Could not ping, but could get DNS resolved. Host just never responded.

@Aya - I was thinking that since lbpcentral was on a VDS that you had to specify the DNS that way... I could be mistaken though.

Huh?

Anyways, for those having DNS resolution issues, note you can bypass that by edting your hosts file, which is C:WindowsSystem32driversetchosts on Windows, or /etc/hosts on Mac/Linux. Just add the line...

208.86.184.190 lbpcentral.com www.lbpcentral.com

...and you'll never have a DNS problem with this site again.

Yesterday was terrible. I kept getting server-side errors. Maybe it is ArrowChat messing this up…

and the site's a LOT slower now than normal. Anyone have possible ideas as to why, besides possibly AC? (i'm not meaning to sound accusative, i'm just looking for outside input.)
