where is the location of the weird grid/ squared paper material (it's used in the introduction level) I really need it. I think its polystyrene or cardboard

It is not actually a material in the game it is actually a sticker. check your stickers bag and you should find it there. If worst come to worst and you cant find it there use you sticker removal tool to remove it from the tree object you get from the wilderness.

I think you get the graph paper sticker when you've done the proximity sensor switch tutorial.
