The equilateral tank

The equilateral tankonturenio
http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/6042/unafotoq.jpgA short level consisting in a smart boss. You not only have to shot fast and avoid dying, you have to interact with it to modify its behaviour.
My initial aim was to create a non static boss. It consists on a triangular tank, which does not stop moving forth and back. Well, in fact it stops sometimes, but then it becomes even more dangerous, hehe. It has some weakpoints, but you have to find them out.

I think the most interesting part is when you have destroyed two of its three weakpoints. Then, you have to find out how to turn it over to shot in its bottom weakspot...

The behaviour is more complex than it looks, because the tank has three gates. Which one has to be opened deppends not only on where it is, but also on in what position it is. To achieve the correct behaviour I had to develop a rather complex logic

This is the second version. I added two new respawn gates, following the advice of Holguin86 in its great tutorial. Comments and criticisms are welcome

UPDATED

I have improved the visual aspect of the tank, as well as the special effects. Now it suffers a sort of explosions when it gets damaged, and a final big explosion before it disapears. The explosions reveal part of the inner mechanism, simulating the deterioration of the tank. I have also added some rockets to create the effect of smoke (although it can't be appreciated in the snapshot, don't know why).

I still have to improve the visual aspect of the rest of the level, which is too plain in my opinion. The problem is that I'm very bad in these issues...

Regarding the gameplay, I have tried to make more apparent the way you have to defeat the boss, as 50% of players do not seem to finish the level.

Don't worry too hard about non-completions. Go check any decent platformer, it's rarely above 75%. Dumb kids. lol.

However, this looks great! I'll check this out when I get the chance.

I played your level today. I liked how all the logic was on display, as it made fighting the boss much more interesting visually. Not really much to say... 5 Stars.2010-03-16 22:21:00

Thank you, but I would really appreciate that you could tell me something about the gameplay... Did you find it too easy?, too hard?, did you find difficult to find out how to defeat the boss?2010-03-16 22:53:00

Well, it would've been hard with all those plasma balls if the checkpoints weren't unlimited. The only other problems I had is that I couldn't see the button on the thing to flip the tank at first (only the levers on the winches) and that you had to nearly be right under the button in order to be able to shoot it. But was that your intention?2010-03-17 02:17:00

Well, the green plasma balls are only in the back layer. The idea is that you have to go to the front layer, and deal only with the three red plasma balls when the tank is moving. In fact, once you know how it works, it is easy to defeat the boss without dying at all xD.

The flip button is what worries me most . I have tried to add the three intermitent red lights to facilitate the player to have the idea that the button is associated to the flip of the tank, but if you found it difficult... well, I don't know how to make it more apparent . And yes, the idea is that is not so easy to use the button, once you know you have to use it.

Thank you so much for expanding your comments

Wow....A lot of logic! I'm going to play this and am just posting this so I don't forget about this.

EDIT:

Just beat the boss, and I have to say, it really is great. A lot of bosses in LBP are just spray and pray bosses. You get your paintinator and just shoot the boss as much as you can while hoping not to get hit by any plasma balls. This boss, on the other hand, felt like there was actual strategy involved. I'd never seen a boss that adapted to its current situation like yours did. Incredibly rewarding. I loved it. 5 stars. And yes, it was pretty hard. Without the infinite life checkpoints, I definitely would have failed. I was way better the second time through. It's one of those bosses you have to learn before you can be really good at. Great job.

Since you're doing F4F, could you check out my level, Waffle World Prologue?

Thank you for the positive comments. I think the boss itself is not going to suffer many changes in next versions. Nevertheless I'm working on the visual aspect of the rest of the level, as well as trying to create a story that explains why to may want to defeat the tank.

I'll play your level today, and let you know my opinion.

Thank you.

This boss is incredibly awesome! When I first saw all those switches light up in the room, I couldn't help but imagine the wires I couldn't see and I got a little cross-eyed. : D

This is the most advanced boss I've personally seen in LittleBigPlanet, or even most other games for that matter. At first when the green sprays of plasma balls appear, my jaw dropped and I'm thinking "There's no way!" But then you realize that they're just on one layer, and you start piecing out a plan of attack. The flow of this fight is just great, outstanding work.

It did take me a couple of playthroughs to actually figure out how to flip the tank. I tried everything that was apparent, but it seemed like I was going to be stuck. During my first attempt, I actually ended up falling through the floor somehow on the left side. I ended up at the bottom of the level behind the entrance. I restarted and tried again, and I discovered the flipper platform in the middle by accident. I still wasn't sure what to do with it, then suddenly the tank was turned on its side.

Funny thing is, it wasn't until I had finished the level that it occurred to me what had happened. It might have just been the way that one session played out, but I didn't see how it had flipped over, just that it had. I'm going to go through your level again after your next update and see how it looks and plays.

Bottom line: Amazing piece of machinery you've put together there, I gave it 5 stars.

Yeah, there are a lot of wires. You can take a look in the snapshoot o posted up in this thread

I really apreciate to hear that. One of the thing that worries me more is that people get scared by the amount of balls, when they can be easily avoid changing of layer. The idea is that you only have to take care of the red balls.

That's not so nice. I don't know how to make more obvious how to flip the tank . On the other hand, how did you managed to fall? hahaha, it's almost imposible!

Thank you for the positive view. Just now I'm working in a new level. Firstly it was sopossed to be an update of this one, but the amount of work I'm deboting I think it worths a new level. I'll publish next week, and tag this one as deprecated. In particular, I'll try to solve the problems you found (problems realizing how to flip the tank, and the respawn gates that made you fall) in this new level.

Hello ontur,
I played your level a few minutes ago and I must say that I liked it.
Personally I am no fan of the paintinator or bosses that shoot out immense amouths of plasmaballs but I liked it nontheless.
I do have to say that I found all the green plasmaballs really confusing, maybe its my age (26 ) but I cant seem to avoid them for more than a few seconds. (i suck)

One of your first speechmouths went away before I could read the first word, and have no clue on what was said.
loading kernel.. lol your boss is funny.

Looking around the boss and showing its logic was neat to figure out what was doing what,
the secondary bot that moves around on the ceiling was an additional nice touch.
Talking about nice touches, its cool that you have to flip the tank to hit his last weak spot.

nice work, 4 stars and marked great.

I will publish a boss of my own (my first one) this sunday/monday, you can find it here:
https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=24732-Sack-The-legendary-Challenge-2-Morbidallia

I hope you will take a look at it and let me know what you think of it.
cheers, luos.

Hi Luos_Desruc. First of all, forgive me for the long delay. I have had few time to play and get online. Nevertheless I'll play your level next time I get online in the game and will let you know my opinion.

Regarding the boss, I have performed several modifications. Nevertheless they are in my new level, The tank factory (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=25396-The-tanks-factory). In particular I have removed the green plasma balls. Now, also, the tank fires not only bombs, but also fire. This makes the boss little bit harder I hope you enjoy these modifications. By the way, I'm 28, so you are not so old after all .

THIS LEVEL WON'T BE UPDATED ANY MORE. IT HAS BEEN TAGED AS DEPRECATED, AND FURTHER MODIFICATIONS WILL BE PERFORMED IN THE LEVEL The tank factory (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=25396-The-tanks-factory), WHICH IMPLEMENTS THE SAME BOSS AS PART OF A LARGER LEVEL.
