Ylod!

Got the yellow light last thursday Not as worried about it as I thought I'd be though. But my point is I need to get it repaired and I'm not sending it to sony because I didn't back up my data. Smart right? Anyway, does anyone know any places I can take it to get it repaired? I was thinking geek squad but I'm not sure if they do it. I also watched some videos on how to repair it but I don't really trust myself.2010-03-11 01:44:00

Well, you can start by searching the site. We have many threads on this, and some actually have answers to them. I remember on though: Craigslist.com.

Honestly though, I got nothing. But good luck.

You could, in theory, check with a local game store, like GameStop or Play N Trade. They usually know what they're doing when they make these repairs. But if they do it, you might void your warranty.

Hope that helped!

Well, this happened to me about 6 months ago too. I did send it into Sony, but I took out the hard drive. I'm suprised they actually fixed it for me because of their supposed "if there are signs of tampering, we won't fix it." So anyway, when I got my fixed PS3 back, I put the hard drive in and it had to format, erasing all the data I thought I'd saved. So, if you can take out the harddrive and find a place or a way to back it up, then you SHOULD be able to get the data back. I think....2010-03-11 02:02:00

I don't think geek squad will do it at all. I checked my local Craig's list and there are guys that will fix it. I'd start there if your not going to have Sony do it. (may void warranty if your still covered though)2010-03-11 02:13:00

If your warranty is over, do NOT send it to Sony. When you get a refurbished console, you're just getting another faulty PS3 that will eventually break down again in the future. Trust me, I've been through two refurbished consoles. Now I'm on my fourth PS3, which will hopefully be my last since I bought a brand new Slim on Monday.2010-03-11 02:58:00

Oh yeah, my warranty is over I'd assume. Bought it back in 2007. I was hoping not to send it anywhere just wanted to bring it up to the store myself, but I'll see what I can find. I did just find a local game store saying they fix em so I'll give them a call.2010-03-11 03:48:00

Yeah its the same thing the heat produced by the console melts the solder connecting the CPU/GPU to the board.

You probably didn't get your PS3 back they recognise their own HDD and format any other that gets put in.

Ever considered fixing it yourself?
(If a disks still in - that doesnt matter since you'll be taking it off, your hard-drive is also taken out and will be just as it was before it broke when you put it back in, so it'll be like nothing happened)

Mines gone YLOD before and i just do what sony would do and fix it like that.
I am being serious, last time i gave this advice they just seemed to ignore it.

The basis of what you'll need to do is:

- Dissassemble your PS3
- Remove thermal Paste from CPU and GPU
- Heat the board using a heat gun
- Reapply thermal paste to CPU and GPU
- Reassemble

it may seem daunting but there are guides on how to do this.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_Ic1_TY-GU

Thats what i followed and it was great.

I'd be more than happy to help you along the process if thats what you decide to do.
I'd offer to fix it for you but more likely than not, distance will probbaly not be in our favour.
I live in Bedworth in the West Midlands in the UK.

NOTE: no responsiblilty is taken for any damages, also if your young i'd suggest asking adults for help.
and also usually once YLOD happens it'll happen again 4-5 months down the line and will need to be repeated.

Oh and when mine breaks it costs me:
-2 hours of my time
-0.75p

Providing you already have a heat gun, if not then theres a one off ?20 fee to buy one of them.
