Little Big Pyramid

Archive: 5 posts

I'm working on my first level and I'd like to solicit some feedback from the creative folks at Little Big Planet Central. The level is set in ancient Egypt and can be roughly divided into three sections:

1. The Egyptian god Osiris summons Sackboy, who ascends through Osiris' earthbound temple up to the heavens. Sackboy soon reaches the god, who explains the Pharaoh is late for his judgement and entrance to the Afterlife. Osiris asks Sackboy to enter the Pyramid and find the Pharaoh.

2. Sackboy returns to the desert and begins traveling to the Pyramid. He soon encounters the Pyramid's guardian - the Sphinx - who blocks Sackboy's path. The creature taunts Sackboy "You'll have to go through me to reach the Pyramid." Sackboy explores the area and accesses the Hall of Records beneath the Sphinx's paws. This area is very "high tech" - fantastic machines whir and beep in the underground complex. Sackboy discovers a flying saucer, which he pilots up from the underground runway to the desert surface. He confronts the Sphinx and breaks off its nose. It shrieks, "Ow! Mah noeth!" Intent on "going through" the Pyramid's guardian, Sackboy enters the Sphinx through the hole behind its missing nose. Sackboy learns the Sphinx ate the key to the Pyramid. He travels to the creatures stomach, finds the key, and proceeds to drag it out the Sphinx's rear end.

3. With the key, Sackboy enters the Pyramid. Obstacles and puzzles challenge Sackboy, but he eventually finds the Pharaoh. He explains to Sackboy that he won't cross-over to the Afterlife without his lucky pet cat - Princess Putty Paws. But the cat is missing somewhere in the Pyramid. Sackboy eventually locates the cat, but it refuses to return to the Pharaoh. Sackboy finds a fish and uses it to lure the cat back to Pharaoh. Sackboy has reunited Princess Putty Paws and Pharaoh. The trio ascend from ascend from the Pyramid to the Heavens and meet Osiris. The god thanks Sackboy for his service and rewards him (with a collection of custom objects found in the level). End of level.

I have a few specific questions in addition to my request for any feedback on the level plot.

1. Is the opening strong enough? I can't decide if you should just start at Osiris and immediately receive your "quest", or if you should journey a bit to reach Osiris. The first option is a more effective and immediate hook. But it lacks any build-up to meeting Osiris.

2. Is the cat & fish sequence even possible? I know I can make an A.I. follow Sackboy. But can I make an A.I. follow a dynamic object that Sackboy is dragging?

3. What is a good target gameplay time for an LBP PSP level?

Thank you for taking the time to read this. I'd appreciate any feedback and comments. If you don't like something, please try to explain why. That will help me improve the design.

You make it sound very promising.

And there aren't many good Egypt levels out there yet, so I'll be looking forward to this.

As for the gameplay time, I'd say around 5 minutes is fine, but for more elaborated, story-driven levels, maybe a 5-10 minutes length is more appropiate.

How to make cat follow fish

hard way

1. Put a magnetic key on the fish

2. Give the cat some motor bolt wheels(creature wheels won't work for this). Also since this is your first level, do you know how to center bolts? If not, select the wheel, press circle til you get back to the popit menu, select the bolt and when you go to place it, it'll be directly in the middle of the wheel.

3. Make a rectangle of static material and glue a 3-way switch on it.

4. Connect a chain to the static block and to the left side of the switch handle. Set it to backwards and make the min length 7 and max length 16(don't have to be exact).

5. Do the same, except on the right side.

6. Set the 3-way switch to directional and connect it to the wheels on the cat

7. put a magnetic key switch on the right side of the cat and connect it to the chain on the RIGHT side of the 3-way switch

8. Do the same except on the left side

easy way:

1. Make sure the cat is made out of cardboard or another light material

2. Instead of motorbolts, use bolts on the wheels on the cat

3. connect a bit of invisible string(tweak the visible setting on the string to off) from the cat to the fish.

4. In play mode, the string is invisible, so when you pull the fish the string drags the cat, but it looks like it's following the fish

You had me at "Ow! Mah noeth!"

Great idea - I'd love to play this level. I say definitely go for it!

1. Is the opening strong enough? I can't decide if you should just start at Osiris and immediately receive your "quest", or if you should journey a bit to reach Osiris. The first option is a more effective and immediate hook. But it lacks any build-up to meeting Osiris.I think the opening is fine as-is. If you start out meeting Osiris, it may not make total sense why you're going down to a desert. If you start out in the desert then it makes more sense that you're on a mission from the gods.

2. Is the cat & fish sequence even possible? I know I can make an A.I. follow Sackboy. But can I make an A.I. follow a dynamic object that Sackboy is dragging?PaddyJ's suggestions are excellent. Option #3 would be to attach a magnetic switch to the cat set to on/off and hook that switch to motor bolt wheels. Put the key on the fish and there you go - cat moves (albeit in one direction) when the fish is nearby.

3. What is a good target gameplay time for an LBP PSP level?Whatever it works out to be. It will probably end up being 5 minutes depending on complexity. It's difficult to make really long levels in LBP PSP - there just isn't enough thermo.
