Abandoned level ideas

Archive: 47 posts

I'm sure a lot of us have started working on a level based on theme, an gameplay idea, a concept etc...,
but for diverse reasons, we just give it up.

So I thought that it could be interesting to know what was your abandoned level ideas, and why you didn't finish them.

I'll start with some simple theme ideas for example :

- Jungle trees
That was my first idea, when I bought LBP. A jungle level, but in the trees...
After a little time, I came to think that it was not a very original idea (a lot of jungle/forest levels) and I gave up.
It's after this one that I started Super Sack Market.

- Paris rooftops
http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1104/542110577_5409489025.jpg
As Paris rooftops are very typical, I thought that it could be a nice setting for a level.
So I started working on the visuals, making some tests, but I didn't manage to make what I had in mind,
I was really not happy with the result (style/atmosphere/materials etc...).
But I still like the idea, and maybe I'll get back to it later...

- Industrial Port
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_b96m0hLJpBI/SPYXzC8RwvI/AAAAAAAADVQ/-s7nR9wwJj8/s400/Image+13.jpg
I was searching an idea for a first level with water, and I wanted to find a theme that wasn't already (a lot) used, so I thought of this one. But after few trials, I thought that this theme was really not my style, and I didn't see myself making a complete level on it.

And I sarted some others ideas like that, but they never made it to the end...

So what are yours?
Maybe some people will not like sharing their ideas like that, but if you're sure that you'll never work on it again,
don't hesitate cause maybe it could inspire or give ideas to other creators!

I had a level that I started and never continued for months. It was based around Dinosaurs in a lost world, and I actually used most of it for Mars Attacks III ages later, so it came in handy.2010-03-07 01:33:00

Well i tried to make a bayou type level but, gave up because i wasn't feeling the idea anymore.
Another one was a concept where you must find a way to help this village escape, it started as an expedition on an mountain then progressed to that, but i worked on it so much that i didn't like the out come i still have it on my moon and with other "lvls" i made.

Me and my friend did a challenge room to get a cirten Beta code. We gave up after a major incident in the reactor, we had to evacuate the level and it's people to a safer place, that part of the moon is a no go zone.2010-03-07 02:07:00

On my other account (which has long since been corrupted), I actually made a full level using the "Savannah" layout based off of...

Yes, an icy cavern system full of terrorist penguins. I almost have it finished... perhaps I should publish it. >_>

LOL Terrorist penguins FTW

Anyways, I was halfway done making an Assassin's Creed themed level, but then it got boring
I was also making this horror themed level set in an abandoned base, but then I ran out of inspiration

Yes. I am absoultely serious. In actuality, all I'd need to edit would be the boss (which sorta sucks, tbh) and how you'd get to the scoreboard. But other than that, it sorta is finished (along with kamikaze penguins and suicide bombing penguins ).

That Industrial Port idea is actually great, I've just had a few flashes in my head as to how a level could be based around it. Hmm...

As for me, I've always wanted to create a level based on space, it's just so beautiful to ignore, I've just never gotten around to doing something on it.

I had the idea of making a level based on wind and clouds. But I ran dry of inspiration quite fast. Then I saw jump-button's level and my jaw dropped on the floor... XD2010-03-07 04:10:00

I had a great idea involving a sweeping, epic tale and newspaper delivery. I had a good plot all thought out.

I just sat on it too long and ditched it after a while.

When I first got LBP I began to make a group of levels with decsion making etc. However since I knew zilch about Logic, I gave up. Here is the idea:

You were a god, you had to choose to be either: God of destruction, Earth, Sea and Sky
It then emiited a key to that level.
You played the level, battled against other gods etc.. It looked rubbish though and it just wasn't fun. Feel free to steal!
(Might remake it though...)

I once had a whole series planned out... it was called 'The Sands of LBP'. I worked on it for a good few months, got 4 of the levels done, but then the 5th one... Oh the 5th one... I did one elevator scene and the thermo had filled up by a quarter. Many more problems ensued, until a scrapped it for good. Now that I look back at it, I'm really glad I scrapped it. It was really badly made and was far too serious for me.2010-03-07 10:36:00

Any of my levels, I start working on them, it looks good, but then I lose interest and forget about them.

But Limbo is looking good, I say. Even if it is quite short. I hope the battle against King Minos will make up for that, though.

You are totally right, I have given up on quite a few of my concepts such as: Your Sack person is a super hero in one, cracking ice shark survival for another, and just a plain ole bomb survival for another. I could spend weeks thinking of all the levels I quit but I would rather just work on the ones I have now.2010-03-07 13:08:00

I was going to make a skate level where the skate board doesen't just go down ramps but moves when you stand on it and you could do tricks when you press R1. I didn't finish it though because there were too many things that kept going wrong. One day I will defintley try and get it done though...2010-03-07 14:28:00

The Site Part 2 - A continuation of the Site Part 1. Had a quite decent chunk done, but didn't have the "magic"(it didn't feel the same while creating) so I scrapped it.

The Mechanical Palace - Temple style level. Unfinished because I ran out of ideas

Tiki Town - Tiki/temple style level. Ran out of ideas

The Mechanical Graveyard - Weddings/mechanical hybrid. Had skeleton mechanic characters. Ran out of ideas

I've got loads of level concepts, but most of them I haven't given up on yet. One idea that I won't be doing is set atop gothic, churchlike buildings, with hidden gargoyles that you need to wake up and do some job for. I got as far as making a big bell. Then I found out there was no bell sound effect and dropped the whole thing for some other idea. 2010-03-07 18:28:00

Bertha the Great - Okay i made this up.... =)

Sky-Breaker - Im sure quinn could remember this one. it was basically a level that was set in ancient breaking temples and giant trees to get to the highest point on earth!

Candy Craze - This level was all about candy... it was really cool.... but i just didn't feel like seeing the valentines day pack materials, I think i got really sick... lol

Sounds cool. I was once going to do a MGS3 Snake Eater level, for the simple reason that the Temples background noise sounds exactly like the Snake Eater jungle. It felt too restrictive though, so I scratched that. I may still do a Metal Gear level, but it won't be based on any existing game.

A level where you wake up in the ruins of a factory and you can't remember anything that happened in the past week. Its was a horror level where you explore the ruins, and encounter living dolls with mixed up pieces. However, this was my first level and I started on it 3 days after I got LBP, so it was pretty bad. Endd up giving it up because it looked like crap.

Also, before I got LBP I had this series planned out. You were a boy who found a portal in the forest, you go in and get transported into an alien world. You must try to get out with some newfound powers while avoiding the evil King who wishes you dead. It was suppose to be long and epic, and have 'secret' levels to give you more information about the plot, and a 3 stage boss with the last stage being HUGE.

Another idea that really wasn't scrapped was an adventure game. You wake up to find out that four evil sackpeople have tooken over LittleBigPlanet, each taking over a part of it. You had to go to each part and kill one of the evil sackpeople, ending with their leader, while doing sidequests along the way. Sadly, I never really started on it. However, LittleBigPlanet Galaxy came out of this idea. Check the thread, a link is in my signature.

I was thinking about making a parody level on Big Rigs Racing, the worst PC game of all time. I planned on Sackboy racing a tuck behind him with crappy shapes, physics, etc. just like the real game. It wouldn't take a lot of effort, but a key feature I wanted to implement was actual images from the game itself. And of course, the wonderful world of Sony denied image importing indefinately. Plus, I was getting tired of seeing that empty level lounging on my moon waiting for images. So I said screw it and moved on.2010-03-09 22:01:00

1) A Jak & Daxter level where you could choose which character to be at the start. The level's physics would change depending on the choice of character. For example if you chose Jak you would be "heavier" and "stronger".
Then I assumed it would be too troublesome with emitting different objects. I could have split it into 2 levels(one for each character), but that would defy the whole point of it.
I did make some nice looking bridges though.

2) World trip. You start in the middle of the level with a tethered jetpack and then you choose which country to explore, after you finish said country you get a sticker of the flag, you go back to the start and select the next one. There was going to be 8 countries, then I cut it back to 6. When you have collected all 6 flags you stick them on a lock to unlock a warehouse and the paintinator. I couldn't think of a story/boss to go with it though.
I made a japanese lab/godzilla section and a brazillian monster jungle chase. The monster was pretty lame though haha.
One concern was the new at the time "disable collecting community objects " or whatever. Another was that the "go back to the start" penguin rocket only worked 95% of the time.
But the deal breaker was when my detailed eiffel tower fell apart. ;_;
I may come back to it in the future.

I also wanted to make one of those firefly levels like in Crash 3, but it was too hard for me.

I made about six levels before I got broadband and online LBP about 'Qwark' an evil geneticly modified monster. Epic fail as I sucked at creating, but the first two, which I think, for some reason, are the best, are published.2010-07-10 00:49:00

i had quite a few... the one's that were furthest along?

what was originally supposed to be False Idols 3, and was a rotating mechanic puzzle and platform level based on a giant version of one of these -

http://photos-a.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sf2p/v197/16/5/647786101/n647786101_552344_483.jpg

i built the snake ouroborus themselves, but all the lighting i was doing with candles and the material set made it unplayable... sooooo much slowdown, but there was no other option for the otherworldly and dark theme... also, i'd only been playing the game a month or two and my understanding of rotating mechanics were very limited. walter kovacs was one of the few to even pull it off at the time.

i had another idea going where i would make an interactive promotional level of all my favorite levels. each room would be themed after the level in design and gameplay, and upon completion, signage would pop up with the level and author name, and a well written review synopsis, then the door to the next one would open. i compiled alol the info, designed billboards and slowly put together snapshots and synopsis for around 40 amazing levels, and after building a few rooms i realized that the variety of materials needed would be so therm heavy that it would need to be at least a 5 part series. i would have eventually finished it, but it would have had to have been on a different account. also, believe it or not, as skilled as i felt i was with my own work, recreating the looks that others had achieved was no easy task - especially when i tried to pull off a Tye Dye room for Jaeyden.

I know this thread isn't that old but still. Why? Who cares? What's so confusing about bumping an old thread? How exactly does that upset your day or throw you off? What's the official rule then? Because there are other people who'll put you down for not digging up old threads, saying: "Oh, lock this mother down, someone already created a tooth-fairy thread 2 years ago, didn't anyone tell you? Foolish noob!"

I'm happy that this thread had been bumped lol
I don't think it's a big problem as the subject is very general, and is not about a specific thing or a past event...

So keep them coming, it's an interesting read!

I have 2 levels I've abandoned, which I would have liked to have finished but I don't think it'll happen.

One was a top-down puzzle/adventure game.
Sackboy was hidden from view and you controlled a little robot. The robot had 2 different modes (walking and shooting) that the player could switch between at any time. In walk mode you could simply move your character up, down, left and right. In shoot mode your character is stationary and you can choose from 4 different weapons (coloured mag keys), aim and shoot. At the start of the game you only have one weapon but as you progress you collect the other 3.

I made all the logic for this level, albiet it very VERY badly but it works perfectly. Everything's ready to go I just never got around to making the actual game. It's all still sitting on my moon waiting to be finished.

The second game I abandoned is my recent Tower Defence level.
I really want to finish this but there's one major problem I can't get past.
I've already made several types of enemies, several types of towers, a currency system, HUD (including tower selection menu, cursor and infomation display) and the map. The only thing holding me back is the enemy's movement.

Old bumped threads may be locked, depending on the subject (that's a rule)

Old bumped threads may be locked, depending on the subject (that's a rule) From what you're saying it seems like context is an issue then, but as a general rule, bumping an old thread if you have something to contribute to it doesn't seem like it should warrant: a) locking the thread up and b) getting confused because it was bumped.2010-07-11 06:39:00

Yes a thread such as this one seems fine to bump. Since as DajDaj said it's a very general topic and is therefore always relevant. Bumping a threads is only a problem when people have no worthwhile information to add or if the topic has been discussed and 'finished' as such.

But then, if the topic is discussed & finished, then it moves on into something completely different for whatever arbitrary reason, why is that such a horrible problem? If it has its own life, leave it be, what's the harm, really?

By the way, just to stay on topic: I was going to make a level about a schoolbus riding along, very colorful, bright, happy then the breaks go out & it'd start running over pedestrians, cause general chaos & somehow wind up in hell. I just lost interest in making it.

quite a few at the start.

My very 1st project was a fairground/theme park level - I was offline for the 1st couple of months of LBP and had no idea how many there were already in just that short time - and how much better than mine they were!
Mine had a very ropey and temperamental ghost train, an industrial and utterly unfriendly looking ferris wheel and a huge pirate ship that was actually ok and the only part I wish id kept - as youll recall back then the pitiful amount of storage meant moons had to be purged of abandoned projects!

Next was a Cube puzzle level based partly on the film and aesthetically on the Battles vid for Atlas - mirrored cube in space. Again as soon as i got online, this thing went to the little big recycle bin!
Im not at all defeatist, its just that I really believe that if someone is already doing something way better than you, then maybe thats not your thing, its theirs.

also had Nosferatu - Phantom Der Sack! based on Herzogs Nosferatu remake. But soon dropped it because it was fairly bad!

But in the creative process nothing is ever a waste is it... these were all valuable lessons in early level buiding. And ideas dont die, they morph and develop, often popping up somewhere later where they make more sense or have more potential
