Any tips to help me stick with making a level and not scrapping it?

Archive: 6 posts

I've made the start of about 4 levels, but I keep losing motivation and scrapping it. I think one of my problems is that I'm not that good at scenery, and this makes me annoyed. Any tips? I REALLY want to make a new level, because The Site isn't a good indicator of my skill level.2010-03-06 21:40:00

Well, scenery should be the last thing you worry about when you make a level. The first thing to do is plan your level out so you have a clear idea of what you need to create. Typically the levels I don't finish are the ones I don't have a clear idea of what I'm doing, so I lose interest when I don't know what to make.

As for scenery, the only advice I can give you is 1) use reference pictures (i.e. google image search); 2) corner edit to perfection; 3) use stickers creatively. Making good scenery requires a bit of imagination, but it's also a good idea to replay the story levels to see how they did theirs.

I just winged it on The Site but it doesnt work for me anymore

Yeah winging it sometimes works, but more often than not it just frustrates you. I'd suggest start with a rough outline for a story, which should give you an idea of what sorts of environments you need to create. Build those environments around fun gameplay ideas, then worry about the visual polish last.2010-03-06 21:56:00

I, too, have many unfinished projects. It's partly because I come up with a new level concept which draws away interest from what I was working on before, but also demotivation because I can't get things to look the way I want them to. However, my latest project has come further than any other. I kept motivated because I was going to enter in the LBW2 competition, and because I was seeing the level really grow. What helped me is that I hit a material combination that I really liked, and the environment I'm building is pretty rectangular, which is a lot easier than organic shapes.

So, maybe you can enter a competition, too, and pick a level concept that requires rectangular shapes.

Abstinence

Stay away from LBP!! It's strange advice, but trust me, it works. Play other games, take a sift through Google Images, sketch out a few ideas - it's much better than staring at the gaping hole at the end of your level, wondering what to put next.
