How long does it take you to finish a level?

Archive: 31 posts

Just wondering about it. Just say how long on average it takes you to finish a level.

It's about two weeks for me to create one, I hate testing it but I love putting it all together. It's just like a 'beat that MM' kind of moment.

If I had the motivation, I could probably crack out an entire level in a whole day. (Most likely the whole night too!) That's if I went through non-stop...

But I usually do an obstacle, and get bored, and a few days later I come back and do another one... And then get bored again... It's just a vicious circle.

I'm quite a fast creator though

Motivated --> 2 or 3 weeks
Not motivated ---> 2 or 3 month if I don't scrap it.

Edit: And it depends on the level of course.

Well, i've done 2 actual leves in a year...
I usually do other stuff, and its kinda difficult to think of the perfect traps for the level (goood traps for a good difficult level aren't easy to think of you know?), not to mention i just keep revamping what i already have of the levels *as a matter of fact, i recently decided to completly destroy Burning Outskirts and remake it from scratch because it was so buggy and wanted to increase difficulty, playability, and graphics, not to mention lately i been spendin most time making costumes and a new costume gallery (97 costumes for the gallery so far )
So yeah, i might take a bit too much time consentrating on other stuff, at least right now im concentrating in "Frozen Plains" again, i already got most of the first boss, just gotta finish some tweaking.

well, anyways, im going off topic, so i'm just gonna say, a lot of time because i concentrate on various projects at once rather than one at a time.

For my first 4 or 5 levels, it took an average of 3-4 weeks. My latest level though, i haven't had much time to work on. Started it at the beginning of December and should be out in a week! Yay! 2010-03-06 18:50:00

40-100 hours for full story levels (includes all experimenting with gameplay ideas, visuals etc). 1-5 hours for a minigame.2010-03-06 19:38:00

It depends if it is fully planned or there's room for improvisation.
I never start a level just after another. I take a small break after publish a level.
Overall, I'd say an average of 4-6 weeks and many hours a day.

About 4 months on average.

I'm a perfectionist and I can't publish a level until I'm satisfied I've reached the high standards that I demand of myself.

1 week normally. I think I've got much quicker as I've created more and more.

Myst however took about 1.5 months.

As time goes on they seem to take me longer and longer. PLASMAVILLE took me one week and Sheriff Sack 2 took me 6 months.

That's probably because I've made over 50 levels since getting LBP and ideas are getting harder to come by. The trouble is I'm not content to just do what everyone else is doing. I like to put at least 1 original idea in every new level I make that I haven't seen anywhere before so that obviously gets harder as more levels are published.

Took me 6 monhts to make Sacky Potter. Took only a couple of days to make Clockworx. Took almost a year to make Deflectorball (although 11 months of that I didn't do anything ).

I'm to much of a perfectionist that it takes me weeks until I'm stasifed with one section. I've beenw rokign on mky next big project for a month or two now and I've still not got the intro section done. I've redone it about 3 times since starting too. I've got to get it just right before I'm happy and can move on.

Freaking ages. Especially if I am working with something new.
I'm working on a level with emitters + custom enemies + boss atm. All new to me. x_X
One slow step at a time.

But I'll bet I could crank out one pretty quickly if I simplified/stylised everything and worked with stuff I know. Like a basic platformer.

As everyone else has said, it depends, but not on motivation for me. If im having FUN making it, not too long, maybe spanning from 1 or 2 months. If im not, if it doesnt get scrapped, it can take up to a dreadful 6 months to finish.2010-03-06 21:37:00

anything from one hour to a month, this depends on, if it's just a replica level or a full on story level.2010-03-06 22:01:00

Around 3 months too..!

I'm also a perfectionnist, and even if my levels are quite short, I can spend a lot of time on details,
and remaking many time some elements...

For me, it could be just qbout ANY amount of time. I think the longest time I took was "Destiny!", which took roughly 2 months. However, when xkappax, catiers, vmethos, and myself did "Grab the Yellow things" it was done in a single evening (with a bit of tweaking the next night...).

But I'm a perfectionist on gameplay.... I would sit there for MANY hours just making sure a single little gameplay mechanic worked right. Then, I would blast through creating the level itself.

My levels take about 6 weeks to make, but it depends on how comfortable I am with what I'm building. A lot of the elements in the level I'm working on right now were outside my comfort zone when i started building it, so it took longer that usual. On the other hand, if I stick to what I know I find i can create stuff twice as fast.2010-03-07 00:58:00

I don't know I haven't published anything so I'm still counting.

But seriously... I could probably finish a level in about a month if I had access to PS3 whenever I wanted but I don't atm.
