A PC fan-made remake of LBP?

Archive: 11 posts

I got this interesting PM on my youtube account today. Let me paste it here

Hi friend, Tops is a game development organization which has just released its new game, Sackboys Little Big Adventure. This game is a PC re-make of the PS3 game Little Big Planet. Here at Tops we were just scouting for some interesting Youtube'ers who we thought would be interested in doing a video review on Sackboys Little Big Adventure. So would you like to do a video review on our new game?

We would very much appreciate it if you did. Our game, Sackboys Little Big Adventure is a puzzle / mystery / adventure, type game. Its aimed at all ages. But you must have a good thinking head on to complete the game.

You can download and play Sackboys Little Big Adventure at the link below.

*insert link here*
(100% Safe)

We have also attached the games official Youtube video below.

Please reply even if you which not to do a review on our new game.

Thanks.

Let us know what you think of it.

And they attached a video

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xXzmQWjQSg

Now I'm not comfortable with clicking on a link sent by a random person (which is why I removed the link on the message above to be on the safe side) But the download link is on the video description. the video is just a screen with music playing nothing else. Plus I can't do video reviews using a PC, I tried desktop recording and I can't.

But on the other hand this could be something so awesome that this might be mentioned on Mediamolecule, arg I'm such a paranoid coward

So what do you think, a sham, or something so awesome it could change LBP forever? Does any brave soul wish to try the link out?

If a mod does think this is risky or just not a good idea to post this I understand.

Doesn't look like anything revolutionary. Just looks like a cheesy recreation of a platformer like all of the Mario remakes you see online today. Nothing surprising to me.2010-03-06 04:47:00

Doing a little research, here is what I have uncovered:

On the youtube channel of the user TopsGames1, they mention another user who recorded a video of one of the games mentioned in the links (Sonic - Shoot Em Up).

In the video of the game, that user mentions that the game was made by a user named TheAnthonyMills. As it turns out, there was a youtube account by that name that was closed a week ago, but a google cached version of that user's channel shows pretty much the same information that is in the TopsGames1 channel, which leads me to assume they are one and the same.

Searching for TheAnthonyMills in google turned up a post from a few days ago on a video talking about something called "Game Maker 7", which seems to be some old software to make simple 2D games. What's more, the cached version of TheAnthonyMills' channel had a subscription to a user called MrGameMakerTutorials, which has tutorials on using the aforementioned Game Maker.
From this I assume that the download links (to executable files approx. 1 to 2 megs in size) are probably just Game Maker files, though I haven't tested them myself for safety reasons (and you should always virus-scan executables you get from the net as a precaution, if you decide to check them out). So it doesn't seem like it's a scam at first glance, however I wouldn't expect anything amazing based on other game videos I have seen using Game Maker, and also because I assume that this "game development organization" is simply a single person having some fun with a game making software.
Now that that's out of the way, I don't think you should record this person's game. Your channel has had some exposure with the companies behind LBP, and game companies are not generally very tolerant of fan-made games that use their copyrighted IP regardless of quality (though they are more likely to crack down on higher quality fan games). Neither of you stand to gain anything from your recording of the game, and I'm sure the person can find someone else with a lower profile to record the game for them.

I've used Game Maker before, and used all the advanced stuff, where you have to use code instead of the drag and drop stuff.

And I can tell you that, by that screenshot, it looks like it's probably their 1-3rd game, judging by the way that they're using the default boulder, block, and Breakout paddle sprite that's included with it, but they could just not be good with sprites.

This reminds me, I should get version 8.0...

I had 6.1, but there was an error whenever I tried to upgrade for free, now you can't anymore.

I guess since I already paid for it, and got scammed by the update thing... :arg:

By the way, you can make 3D and Online games with it, but barely anyone can do it well.

Karoshi 2.0 (http://www.yoyogames.com/games/32253-karoshi-20)
Super Smash Bros. Rumble (http://www.yoyogames.com/games/43778-smash-bros-rumble-v069)
You Made It! (http://www.yoyogames.com/games/48522-you-made-it)
Innoquous (http://www.yoyogames.com/games/57232-innoquous) (2 and 3 are out too.)
Secret Agent Dorito (http://www.yoyogames.com/games/7679-secret-agent-dorito)
There are tons more, but I'm too lazy to look for 'em all.

Also, most people save game maker games as .EXE files when they're done, so other people can't edit them, and so that if it was made with the pro version, people with lite can play it.

EDIT: Oh, yes. And when I asked Sam about making an LBP fan game, he said it'd be better if I didn't, because it could be removed by SONY at any time.

EDIT 2: Okay, uhm... Clicked on quote by accident. Double post... Can mods merge posts or something? There's really no need for my two posts there.

Which link?

One of them is to YouTube, and the ones I posted are to YoyoGames, which is safe. You need to download a plugin if you want to play the games straight from the site, but you can still download the games.

I've been using Game Maker since I was 8 or so, so I trust their new site.

I'm am also familiar with Game Maker (I purchased 6.1, but the computer that I had it on broke), and much of the games featured on YoYo Games are quite poor. However, I found a good quality Mario game (http://www.yoyogames.com/games/39115-mario-builder-v8-6) that let's you create your own level sets, just like LittleBigPlanet.

It has it's bugs and glitches (lag if too many blocks are placed in one screen), but the author is quite active at the moment and updates it regularly.

MM actually has a .EXE file of lbp, so they COULD release it for PC, but since they married Sony, they can't.2010-03-08 19:44:00

judging by the screenshot on the video, it looks bad. i wouldn't review it.

but anyway, if it is good (doubt it) it won't be as good as the original.
