The Best of Introes

Archive: 7 posts

I am making yet another level to my collection, but like usually, it's hard to get started. By this I mean both with me, and with the level.

To say it shortly, I want to know, what's the best, cleanest, intro you can think of. What gives you a hint of the level's story and theme without being a 200 speech bubble text hell? What makes you exited and what is just boring? What is the way you'd want a level to start?

To give you some ideas, I have narrowed down a few intro archetypes here.
-A big fancy banner baring either the level's or creator's name, (like in Bioshock, or Dead Space.)
-A vehicle ride across some scenery. (For example Magical Manufactory.)
-A scripted intro with dialog and/or scripted plot points.
-Throw you in and explain stuff slowly along the way.

Now that I have made sure you have got a clue of what I meant, it's time to exploit your minds. Show that keyboard no mercy, and share your opinion.

What is the best imaginable way to start a level?

Ideally, no intro at all, but if you think you need one, then make sure the player can skip it.

How about trying the intro to my level: Planet X

PSN: Ladylyn1

I got a lot of positive feedback about that one.

I find what helps is first define the theme of the level. Figure out the main characters, the problem and soultion, beggining, middle and end. What events have led up to this.2010-03-05 20:47:00

To say it shortly, it's a sequel to What lies Below, only 10 times better than the original sequel: Power of a Thousand Atoms.

You could say it's the remix of my worst rated level. Playing What lies Below, and reading the description of PoaTA will give you all the knowledge you need.
Note that the new sequel wont necessarily be anything like PoaTA, so don't trust the description to be absolute truth.

I prefer the last option: throw them in, give them the minimum info required to get some bearing on the situation, then reveal the story along the way. I see sackboy (the player) as a random traveller/explorer who just happens to run into your narrative.2010-03-06 15:00:00
