Welcome to the first ever Vincent van Sticker LBP PSP art contest! The concept is simple:

Create an original art piece in LBP PSP using nothing but stickers.

It should be no surprise to you that I'm crazy for stickers, so I thought I'd spread the joy and see what all of you might come up with. Like any good contest, this one has a theme, and that theme is....... (drumroll please)

Bloom or Doom

Ahh, springtime. Bright sunshine, chirping birds, and colorful flowers abound everywhere. What could be more beautiful than.... wait. What's that? Oh no, it's.... THE APOCALYPSE!!!! (or rather, "ApocalyPS3 (http://www.apocalyps3.com/)" as it were)

In honor of the changing seasons, create a beautiful and cheery scene of springtime for all to enjoy. Or, if you're in a slightly darker mood, create a horrible scene of destruction and mayhem!

The Prizes
Now we get to the good part! The contest winner will receive his or her choice of the following: One FREE premium LBP DLC pack of the winner's choosing.* (This prize option is for NA (US and Canada) region games only. At this time we do not have the ability to send out EU or Asia region codes.)

-- OR --
One FREE month of LBPCentral donor status. No ads! Custom title! Bonus forum features! Did you hear me? NO ADS!!
Had enough? Well too bad, because there's more. The winner of this contest will also be given the option to be a judge for Round 2 of the next Vincent van Sticker contest. Your friends will be SO jealous!

* Premium LBP PSP DLC is defined as any of the available "level" or "theme" packs currently available for download, including The Gardens Level Pack, The Savannah Level Pack, The Wedding Level Pack, The Canyons Level Pack, The Sack That Time Forgot Level Pack, or the Lurve Level Pack. Any additional DLC of equivalent or lesser value that is made available before the end of the contest may also be chosen as a prize option.

The Deadline
The deadline for this contest is 11:59pm MARCH 17TH, 2010 Greenwich Mean Time (http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/info/current-time.htm). Your entry must be received BEFORE MIDNIGHT GMT on the 17th or it will be considered late. For shame!

The Rules Stickers only! No game-provided objects allowed.
No corner edited shapes. All art must be composed exclusively of stickers.
All art must be created on a rectangular piece of "basic cardboard" material. It can be any size you like, but it has to be cardboard and it has to be a rectangle. (Yes, a square by definition is a rectangle. Didn't you study in class?)
Follow the theme. If your artwork has nothing at all to do with the theme, it will not be considered.
You can submit up to two entries per round, although of course you can only win once per round.
Participants cannot win twice in a row. This means that if you win this round, you can't win the next one. If you won the last one, you can't win this one. You can still participate of course, but just for fun.
Judges may also enter the contest and participate, but just for fun.
To enter the contest, simply post a picture in this thread. Having trouble getting a good picture? Taffey can help! Put your art in a level, publish it, and post here - Taffey will take care of the rest. Be sure your art is fully visible by adding an appropriately adjusted camera zone.
Read the disclaimer. Yes, we have a disclaimer. Read it I say or I will send a swarm of angry leprechauns after you!

The Disclaimer
By participating in this contest, you agree that you understand that the judges will make their decisions objectively, fairly, and in an unbiased manner. You also agree that there is no place for whining in an excellent contest such as this one, and any belly-aching or other distasteful behavior will result in public mockery and being pelted with soggy apricots. Finally, by participating you agree that the point of this whole thing, win or lose, is simply to have fun and enjoy yourself. This is, afterall, a video game.

The Judges

"Mad Bomber" Taffey
"Green Thumb" jeffcu28
"Beautiful Disaster" salieri

Why are you doing this?
Why not? I think this kind of contest might help push people outside of their comfort zones a little bit and try something they hadn't thought of before. I'm also eager to see what tricks everyone has up their sleeves, and of course I just like seeing the surprising and creative things people come up with. The real reason I'm doing this, however, is that I just want to see the LBP PSP community grow, learn, and have fun.

The Credits
I'd like to thank Cog for letting me *ahem* "borrow" such an excellent idea from the Leonardo da Stickerist (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=16563-Leonardo-da-Stickerist-%7E-Art-Contest-%7E-Round-I-%7E-OVER%21-Winners-on-Page-5&highlight=leonardo+stickerist) contests for the PS3. I would also like to thank jeffcu28 for the excellent banner and for getting the ball rolling on this whole contest thing - it's really fun! Finally, I want to thank ConfusedCartman for all his hard work, support, and hours spent reading my nonsensical and rambling PMs.

Anything Else?
Nope, that's it. Now run along and get stickering!

(Lol, sorry. Just the irony of my contest's winner actually hosting a contest is making me amp'ed up enough to be this contest's winner. Double Irony !)

As rewarding the prize is, I cannot accept it.
Although, entering a contest will be fun.
The reward seems great, but I would never ruin the reptutation for someone else that wants to win it.
We know what this will be leading to.

To summarize, I'll enter the contest for free, so I do not want win any prizes.

One more question Taffey, can we do a theme of both? Bloom and Doom?

Cool deal, no problem. I'll grab the level tomorrow and take a screen capture for you.

Beacuse I live in the EU, I it possible to pass the DLC prize onto someone that can use it?You betcha. The prize is yours for the choosing. If you pick DLC it will be in the form of a game code redeemable only on the US PSN store. You can use it yourself (if you're able) or give it to whomever you like.

Thank you very much, I am greatly honoured. As a judge I will be looking for artwork that has both ?lan and ?clat. Of course precision and brushwork is always important, but as Titian said to L S Lowry, "Better a messy sticker than a sticky mess".

EDIT: I've uploaded a 'Just for fun' entry that would probably nbe ineligible anyway on account of its ostentatious presentation. I haven't got a picture but it's in Funflowers by SalieriAAX

It's too bad it's been acting up on you the way it has.

As for the prizes, passing on the DLC to the next runner-up US resident would be very kind indeed. Of course, you're allowed to be selfish as well and take the region-free donor status prize. It's actually worth more than the DLC!

Regardless, I'm looking forward to your resolved technical issues and eventual entry.

Facing off against a master is the best way to become better, no?

That being said, I don't feel that inspired for making a scene of mayhem, so maybe I'll change my focus to make some kind of spring scenery.

Ok! Levels downloaded, pictures taken, list of entries updated.

I'm just not happy with the still picture quality of my video capture setup - it's good for video but screen captures are muddy So, I went old school and just used a half decent camera with a macro function. Much better!

EDIT: Oh! And great entries so far everyone! We have a pretty even mix of both bloom and doom. TheNerd took it in a direction I didn't expect at all, and I really like it! Kind of an abstract Dios de Los Muertos type of stylish doom. And who can resist Fastbro's cuddly little Sackfamily?

So far presentation-wise salieri's is the best - you have to play the level to see what I mean. jeffcu28's piece is appropriately very Zen, and I think it goes without saying that I like Arrestor's style.

Can I have the official photographer take a pic at my scenery? (Fancy talking, no?)

Anyways, it's called "Spring Time Darkness". It's mainly abstract art. One side is spring, the other darkness.

P.S. Is it okay if the floor was Corner Editied? I didn't feel like the rectangle should just be floating there, so I added a bit of stuff around it do it can be in the mood/atmosphere. If it's not allowed, then I'll delete the floor.

Ok, sorry it took me so long to post these. That whole "real life" thing that everyone talks about. Personally, I think it's overrated.

So anyway, below are the latest four (and very excellent) pieces of sticker art. Thanks for the entries everyone!

famouscustard
http://i900.photobucket.com/albums/ac207/tross13/VvS-R1-famouscustard.jpg
"Doom by Moon"

Awesome! My favorite part has to be the severed, flaming, and predictably unhappy Sackboy head. The flower is an especially nice touch.

TheNerd
http://i900.photobucket.com/albums/ac207/tross13/VvS-R1-TheNerd-3.jpg
"Bloom into Art"

Very cool entry - I like the abstract but still clearly springtime look. Great use of the white bullseye stickers for flowers and layered square stickers for texture. Nicely done!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CyberSora
http://i900.photobucket.com/albums/ac207/tross13/VvS-R1-CyberSora.jpg
"Spring Time Darkness"

This is a totally different approach and I really like it. I see what you mean about the floor... It's certainly stretching the rules but I didn't explicitly say you couldn't do that though, so I'll allow this one - but I'm only counting the part above the floor. Going forward I'm going to say the whole rectangle must be visible, but this is fine really. Looks great!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BlueBulletBill
http://i900.photobucket.com/albums/ac207/tross13/VvS-R1-BlueBulletBill.jpg
"Sunset Showdown"

Hehe, I'm loving all the doom. Of course the pretty bloom entries are always nice, but a bit of fire here and there helps mix it up a bit. I'll guess it's.... a horrible, giant cow from outer space sent to destroy Sackkind? Love it.

Some throughly thought-provoking pieces. I can feel the intense, tormented influence of Hieronymous Bosch and William Blake in abundance, and I think I see aspects of Monet's masterful image composition in some of the greener entries.2010-03-09 10:14:00

I don't think I can enter the contest...
My week has been kind of rough.
First, publishing "Visiting The Canyons"
Second, My new level became corrupted >_<
and Third, I had to work on my science project for school.

I thought of my picture, it was suppose to be a lonely flower sprouted in a town on fire.
I don't know if I'll have the time to publish it...

So I think I may have to drop out on this one.
Sorry Taffey.

I've just finished my second entry. "Cow Doomsday!" I'd be thankful if someone would take a picture.

I knew it! I was just waiting for someone to mention a cow for sometime!

After many evenings of fitful deliberation fueled by Mountain Dew and frozen burritos, the judges have come to a conclusion! The winner is:

"Spring Time Darkness"

Congratulations CyberSora! I'll be contacting you shortly via PM to arrange your prize.

With all the excellent entries we received for this contest, it was very difficult choosing an overall winner. Although CyberSora brought home the gold medal for this round, I have to give an honorable mention to TheNerd's subtle but awesome second entry:

"Bloom into Art"

I hadn't planned to give out a 2nd place or consolation prize, as I don't have any additional download codes right now, but I would like to award TheNerd with 100 forum experience points (balance to be paid when the forum exp system returns). Congrats TheNerd!

Congrats CyberSora

Definitely a lot of attention to detail in that entry. TheNerd's entry is also pretty epic.
And hey, all the entries that were posted were also pretty good.

Thanks for a great contest guys! Looking forward to the next one.

Hey, how did you know what I eat on a daily bases? Mountain Dew (and burritos) FTW!

Anyways, thanks for picking my art. I had fun doing it!

Even though I have no say in this, if I had to pick 3rd place, I'll go with Gilgamesh's (because the monkey is too funny to resist).

Here goes, though the scanlines annoy me lol (guess my digital camera is too good).

"Forest Life"

As for the judges' "just for fun" entries, I'll have to pick Taffey's.

I think I will call it.... "Mondays Suck".

Congratulations CyberSora! Very interesting interpretation of the two themes, and the dark mood worked really well.

And congratulations to TheNerd too for the fresh contemporary style.

Encore! Encore!,

Very well done to all the entries, it genuinely was a difficult to pick a winner and all of the entries were of a very high standard. Congrats particularly for Cybersora as the winner.

Haha cool. Being second place is alright with me. But, uhh, I have to ask what are forum points? I haven't been a member long enough to know what that is/2010-03-24 08:35:00

So, forum experience... Well it's a (currently disabled) system in which you earn experience points as you use the forum. Posting, replying, getting thanked, etc. will all earn you varying amounts of exp that you can use to "buy" things like larger avatar pictures, custom forum titles, additional signature permissions, cool little icons that show up under your profile picture, etc. You can give points away as well as receive points from others. It's a fun little system that was sadly put on hold when LBPC was recently upgraded to vBulletin 4.0.1 due to compatibility issues. It is expected that this system, or a similar equivalent, will be made available again soon. For now, we just keep track of who we owe how many forum points to so that we can pay up when the system is reinstated.

Does that answer your question?

Hey Taffey, I know I'm not a real judge, but can I suggest an idea for the new theme?Yes you can!

Unfortunately I'm just now getting ready to post Round 2, which of course means we've already picked a theme. I'd love to hear your idea though - PM it to me.
