How To Avoid Distorted Avatars And Level Patches When Using Custom Stickers

Archive: 40 posts

Introduction

N.B. This only applies to level badges when viewed in LBP1. Both LBP2 and lbp.me leave the aspect ratio unchanged.

This came up some time ago on the LBW forums (http://forums.littlebigworkshop.com/lbp/board/message?board.id=pod&thread.id=113903), but I haven't seen it mentioned here, and it's very useful, so here goes.

You might have noticed that when you try to use a custom sticker (excluding PS Eye images) as an avatar or level patch, it gets squished in the horizonal axis. This is because custom stickers have a 16:9 aspect ratio, but avatar and level patches have a 1:1 aspect ratio. Fortunately, there's an easy way around this.

Method

Let's assume you want to use the following image as your avatar or level patch...

http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=13859
It's.... me! Hurrah!

1. Go into Create Mode.
2. Turn on Small Grid mode.
3. Create a one layer thick block of Dark Matter, 8 units wide by 4 units high.
4. Change the brush to a 1x1 size, go to the middle of the second row just above the center, and cut away the 2 innermost squares in a horizontal line.
5. You should now have a shape that looks like...

http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=13860
The Aspect Ratio Correction Block

6. Leaving Small Grid mode on, when place your custom sticker in the middle of this shape, it exactly snaps to the right angle to stretch it to a 16:9 ratio.

http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=13857
Where's my head?

7. Now fill in the hole, and change the material to cardboard or glass, or whatever material you prefer for taking pictures on.

http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=13858
I'm all stretchy

8. Switch to Front View and take your photo.

http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=13856
It worked!

Now when you use this photo as either an avatar or level patch, it should look exactly correct. Note that there will be some quality loss when you take a photo of a photo, but it might be preferable to squishy pictures - the choice is yours.

Hmmmm, I just use a square of rubber then corner edit out, pretty sure the hole in the middle does the same thing. Thats how my avatar on LBP looks so poifect

I was gonna post this, but I couldn't find the link to give credit and then I forgot about it. Is something a lot of people will benefit from I'm sure.

Yep. The link to the original thread suggests a similar method, I just found it too hard to get the right angle with grid mode off, so this makes it a lot easier.

I just zoom in on my sackboy...

I don't see how that helps with aspect ratio correction.

I assume he zooms in so far that you can't see any details.... then aspect ratio becomes a moot point

Lemme get this straight though. Making a hole and the filling it in glitches the photo so that the proportions change?2010-03-03 22:00:00

Ahh. Yes. That's much easier.

You should read the original LBW thread I linked to in the first post. It's more the fact that placing a sticker on the edge of a material causes it to stretch to various different ratios, depending on exactly where you place it. The hole in the middle approach just allows the same trick to work in grid mode, and always selects the correct ratio. It's just a fortunate coincidence.

I assumed he meant the original method I linked to in the first post, but I could be wrong.

Yeah is pretty much the method in the linked post. I think. I did it from memory and just hacked around until I got it right.2010-03-03 22:20:00

Wow, that's awesome. I've got a new avatar in lbp now (my Optimus Prime costume that I use as my avatar here) and I've got a shiny new level icon for my wip pinball level. Thanks.2010-03-05 22:57:00

If they patched in the ability to take pictures as a square, life would be so much easier, lol 2010-03-05 23:17:00

Does seem like a pretty big oversight. Plus you lose a bit when you take a picture of a picture, but oh well.2010-03-06 08:55:00

This is great. I used it for my circular logo.
I just stuck the sticker on the angle of just the bottom edge of a piece of dark matter. Then just extend the corners. No need to cut a hole in it or anything.

Really? Did you do this in grid mode, or no grid? Cos I found with no grid there were several different angles it could stick at, only one of which was the right one to stretch to the right ratio, and with grid mode, it wouldn't let you stick to the edge.

No grid. It worked easily for me. Maybe I just got lucky?
I only needed to do it that one time, I haven't experiemented any further. I'll have a play around when I get on LBP.

Wait. so does this only work for pictures alerady taken, Or could I just make my logo/avatar out of stickers directly on the material, after I do the method?2010-08-24 20:13:00

You take a photo of the logo normally, stick it on DM edge, corner edit + change material, then re-take the photo.

Cheers for the information, i hate making level icons where you have to take tons of pictures just to get the right shape. No it will be easier thanks!2010-12-31 15:41:00

Just a note to anyone using this glitch, as helpful as it was, distorting the icon in LBP1 will make the version on LBP.me look far too stretched. However, in LBP2, the icon will appear fine without any glitches, both in the game and on LBP.me. 2010-12-31 16:11:00

Yeah, I'm hoping they backport a patch into LBP1 so it's consistent, but they may not bother. All mine are currently set up to look correct in LBP1, so I'll probably just change 'em after LBP2 is out.

Extremely useful, but it is a little bothersome with all the stretching it does on LBP.me, that will now affect the integration with level showcase as well.

Thanks for the tutorial anyway Aya!

instead of using a regular pic, i use a thing that gives you a color outline before the zipper, then in the center you put you desired picture. i use a photo booth thing to take a picture of it so it comes out just right every time. check out some of my levels' logos that have it and you might understand better.2011-01-14 02:57:00

Yeah, I used it loads of times, thanks. I even put it in a tutorial level, but no one play them now with lbp2.
LBP2 cuts the edges of pics instead of shrinking.

This doesn't really apply to LBP2, or lbp.me - those both display the image in the correct aspect ratio. It only applies when viewing the badge in LBP1, which unfortunately means it's not possible to build a badge that has the correct ratio in both LBP1 and LBP2.

There is, however, something that I have noticed recently. Is it me or do level links display the old, squished aspect ratio?2011-02-06 14:19:00

Yeah - I noticed that too. Fortunately if they look really bad, you can conceal them and trigger them with a switch instead.

To fix the aspect ratio on level links you can just put the sticker that you used for the badge on the level link and it looks better.2011-08-15 23:32:00
