My (professional) suggestions for editor improvements.
Archive: 30 posts
Im not gonna, add more materials.. blabla... I am gonna suggest some things Ive had in other engines/editors/apps that where related to enviromental/game design. *Border-options* With border options I mean, show thick green line around movable objects. for instance: *Green line: Moving objects. (aka objects that not have been glued to dark matter) *Red line: complex objects. (the ones the engine hates) *Yellow line: "Problem objects" for instance, objects that get "stressed" due to i.e. pistons and keeps shaking/stressing (often results in objects/pistons/winches moving very slow over a very long time when they are not activated/off state/unwanted movements) *Blue line: Show complex area's. Other colored line: Show un-used switches.. (like a not connected prox etc) *Replace Material option/menu* Just select Material A, replace it with Material B Select all objects with "Chosen material" "Warning message" It would be good to have a small menu popping up when something breaks, preferable telling you what happened, why and with one press of the button you will zoom in to the spot where the breaking happened (will rewind for you when pressed) (Very normal for almost all editors I have worked with) *AutoBack* Almost every editor I have worked with (and even other applications like "Word" has this option. Autoback will automatically back up your level every "X" minutes, up to "Y" amouths of backups before the first one will be overwritten. *Set popit cursor speed* I want my cursor to move faster, as well as the vertex edit tool (aka corner edit tool). *Faster Sackboy in editor modus* I dont want to place my uber-over-powered slingshot to get to the other side of the level within 2 seconds. *remove that freaking noise when in pause* Its really... REALLY bothering me. *Set rotation %* 90 degrees is not enough, I want to have the option to rotate objects 45/22.5 degrees. *Use keyboard for setting speeds/lengths/time* when I need a piston to go over 100 in length... I cry a little inside. Especially when I needed a piston that was 960 long.. Took me minutes to get there. why cant I use my keyboard for this, and why doesnt the counter gradually go faster after reaching the "100's" *Multiple pages in fav. pop-it menu* I would like one page with materials, another for bolts/pistons/switches, a 3th for stickers etc. It will speed up the building process a lot instead of constantly scrolling down because each material/object is indexed in another way. Preferably I would like it if I could customise it from begin to end, index/organise it myself. *Organised sticker menu* I got all but one sticker packs.. And I need to sticker a lot. And often for one sticker.. that means.. scrolling down for about 45 to 60 seconds (depending if you are in co-op edit or not) and can take up to 5 minutes if you are actively searching for certain stickers. So it would be wise to have each catagory on another page. this would really speed up the stickering/sticker finding process. *Better cursor memory* No clue why, but if you place a few stickers, and then use the sticker edit tool to delete one. The cursor in the sticker menu will be reset, ffffffreaking anoying if you ask me. This also happens occasionally with the fav. pop-it menu/material menu/gameplay menu. And sometimes randomly switches pages/postion itself on another material you where not using. *Grid options should not be under start* I find it very anoying that I have to press start for this menu, not to mention how borkey it sometimes is to select the right grid size as the cursor will jump down/up for no reason when pressing left/right. *Highlight wire* Highlight a specific wire (logic) so its easier to track it down when your view has more in common with spaghetti than a level. Update 1: *Materials/stickers in use menu* A seperate menu like your fav. menu in the pop-it, but only showing the materials/stickers in use. Update 2: "Drag and hold" If you drag your cursor and select multiple things, holding triangle or any other button should make it possible to drag again, adding to, or removing from selection. "Select objects with same name" You can name copied objects, why not make it possible to select them all, or "change this part its material on all other identical objects" "Layer selector" Pressing r2/l2 when in cursormode/holding the ends of a piston/winch/sticker etc, should make you change planes, so you can work more efficient in the editor. "Larger editor rotation view" So you can more easily sticker sides for instance. (you can obviously use a cam for it, but im not here to give tips, I am here to give my humble opinion) "Hide objects" Select an object and get a menu with for instance the option "Hide" so you can more easily build behind it. "Optimise object" From the first day 3d was invented (polygons) there have been 3d models with vertexes (corners) that are exactly at the same spot, on all palnes (X/Y/Z). Pressing this should merge all corners that are on top of eachother. maybe have an advanced option to merge vertexes (corners) that are within "X" radius of eachother. "Sticker layer selector" I hate the fact I cannot place one sticker under another. Nuff said. "Advanced WobbleBolt" Personally I really think it would be handy if you had a button in the WobbleBolt menu that would "Set current object location as standard" so you dont have to fiddle around with the degrees etc to get it right. (often happens with objects that are rotated in the eyes of the engine) (but personally I am not so bothered by this) *Set/Reset Pivot* Pivot is the Main point any object rotates about, as a circle rotates around it centre, that centre is called a pivot. Sometimes when you create an object, rotating it with grid on will result in it being rotated/way off grid. Resetting the pivot would result in the object rotate normally when grid on. Setting the pivot for instance on the corner of a square would make it rotate around that corner instead of the centre of the square. This is really handy for complex and strange shaped objects/copied objects. And to get them back on grid. "Ungrabable dissolve" I know, I didnt want to talk about materials, but i dont get why there is no ungrabable dissolve and having to use a brain just because i dont want my dissolve to be grabbed. Update 3: *Texture mover on material* If you use this cursor and select an object, you can move/rotate the material on it without moving the object. This way you can allign certain borders/trimming a lot better. *Newton meter* Shows how much an object weights/shows how much weight a rocket can push, Sure you can fiddle with the rockets to get it right, but exact calculations would be nice for i.e. hover. *Scorebubbles sound* should make collected sound when sackboy walks by them in the editor, maybe even show multiplier so you can check scorebubble chaining in-editor. Other LBP-gameplay related suggestions: *Touch-Switch* Activates when Sack and/or object touches the object this switch is placed on. Maybe with an option "Activate when Sack enters/exits water" *Force of View (Fov)/depth of camera change in camera* This can dramastically alter the depth of field, like the front view camera, but ingame. *Score-counter switch* For instance, activates when player reaches a score of 1000. (good for pinball/arcade like games) *Pock-it menu* Able to create pock-it items your sackboy can collect while playing the level, i.e. find a key, put it in your pock-it menu and later use it on a door. would be very cool for trade/exploration/collecting levels. *Paintinator ammunition* Able to change the projectiles in the paintinator, i.e. add a key to the paint so you can use mag-switches. K enough for now. Dont get me started on the option to show various thermo's Thats it for now, my arms hurt like hell. cheers. | 2010-03-03 21:17:00 Author: Luos_83 Posts: 2136 |
Nice list It makes me mad how little MM bothers to try to fix the things that, when improved, would make water look like a costume pack. lol. | 2010-03-03 21:20:00 Author: Incinerator22 Posts: 3251 |
YES great ideas! | 2010-03-03 21:49:00 Author: Kern Posts: 5078 |
Updated, prolly couldnt sleep if I didnt add it. | 2010-03-03 22:05:00 Author: Luos_83 Posts: 2136 |
You didn't mention being able to copy an object without un-glueing it first. | 2010-03-03 22:10:00 Author: RoharDragontamer Posts: 397 |
Well, define moving faster… | 2010-03-03 22:35:00 Author: Ragfell Posts: 729 |
You didn't mention being able to copy an object without un-glueing it first. I second that, I always forget that something is glued to this huge chuck of the level and unknowingly I have copied half of my level. Or I have to unglue it, copy it, paste it, but somehow during this time I bumped the what it was glued to and now I have to undo everything I just did. | 2010-03-03 22:42:00 Author: shebhnt Posts: 414 |
I dont glue untill I am done with a room, and will try to glue as optimal as possible, this way i can copy certain part (or pre-glued objects) without any hassle. nontheless a good option i have not considdered yet. Well, define moving faster… Just like any other game "Mouse speed". for instance 1.0 is normal cursor speed, and 2.0 is twice its speed. | 2010-03-03 23:40:00 Author: Luos_83 Posts: 2136 |
Dude,of everything i agree the most to the Sticker Organize thingy idea stuff yeah, true it gets really, REALLY anoying sometimes, especially for the Artist Creator Type. | 2010-03-03 23:44:00 Author: Bloo_boy Posts: 1019 |
Im not gonna, add more materials.. blabla... I am gonna suggest some things Ive had in other engines/editors/apps that where related to enviromental/game design. *AutoBack* Almost every editor I have worked with (and even other applications like "Word" has this option. Autoback will automatically back up your level every "X" minutes, up to "Y" amouths of backups before the first one will be overwritten. You would have to select Y amounts of locations on your My Moon and reserve them for this Autosave function *Set popit cursor speed* I want my cursor to move faster, as well as the vertex edit tool (aka corner edit tool). For those that want the corner edit tool to be slow for the purpose of precision, the speed of the corner edit tool can be determined by how far your camera is zoomed out *Set rotation %* 90 degrees is not enough, I want to have the option to rotate objects 45/22.5 degrees.Until they implement this idea, you could use a wobble bolt. *Use keyboard for setting speeds/lengths/time* when I need a piston to go over 100 in length... I cry a little inside. Especially when I needed a piston that was 960 long.. Took me minutes to get there. why cant I use my keyboard for this, and why doesnt the counter gradually go faster after reaching the "100's"I like this idea the best as it will allow for more precise tweaks like the linear and angular velocity of an emitter or the trigger angle range of a magnetic/proximity switch. My comments are in red. It really sounds like all of these problems could be solved by creating an Advanced Edit Mode. Along with all of your suggestions, they could do the following: 1. Make certain layers available to us like the checkpoint layer and the paint layer (also known as the sackperson layer), and have a pop-up window show us which layers are occupied by the highlighted object/material. 2. Allow a choice between using either a USB mouse or the Playstation Motion Controller (when it comes out). 3. Create the option to individually select the objects that you want to glue (objects must fit the standard conditions that must be present before gluing is possible). 4. Have an automatic search function that looks for similar objects (two or more objects that are just about the same shape but may differ because of reversal, rotation, or size). This function would allow you to treat the objects as if they were duplicates of the selected objects as long as you consent to the removal of inconsistencies such as different stickers placed on the duplicates or slightly different dimensions. 5. Add other thermo-saving automated functions like the function described on #4. | 2010-03-03 23:54:00 Author: MMLgamer Posts: 183 |
MMLgamers post reminds me that I would like a tool that would allow you to turn "OFF" layers altogether. This would allow easier creation of multi-layer mazes and/or connections. Especially for me, who likes to create as I go instead of planning everything out. (Even when I take the time to plan, I end up going off plan and need to add stuff later.) | 2010-03-04 00:05:00 Author: RoharDragontamer Posts: 397 |

I want my cursor to move faster, as well as the vertex edit tool (aka corner edit tool). For those that want the corner edit tool to be slow for the purpose of precision, the speed of the corner edit tool can be determined by how far your camera is zoomed outDuh, but I dont want to zoom out on 9 out of 10 occasions. 90 degrees is not enough, I want to have the option to rotate objects 45/22.5 degrees.Until they implement this idea, you could use a wobble bolt.I know, but good point. 1. Create the option to individually select the objects that you want to glue (objects must fit the standard conditions that must be present before gluing is possible). Why not just a "Press and hold button to add or remove stuff from selection" (as with your mouse) 4. In all other editors I have worked with, you had a group option, you could name that group and select all groups trough a select all menu. First post updated (within 2 minutes for some stuff) MMLgamers post reminds me that I would like a tool that would allow you to turn "OFF" layers altogether. This would allow easier creation of multi-layer mazes and/or connections. Especially for me, who likes to create as I go instead of planning everything out. (Even when I take the time to plan, I end up going off plan and need to add stuff later.) good point. | 2010-03-04 00:05:00 Author: Luos_83 Posts: 2136 |
No, they could be in an autoback menu accessed trough the start menu or a certain menu when you are on your moon.So you want a separate list for Autosaved points similar to Windows System Restore points. Nice idea. Duh, but I dont want to zoom out on 9 out of 10 occasions. Well, I don't want to have to press start and switch the cursor speed on several occasions. Then again, MM could implement both ideas if they implement the Advanced Edit Mode idea. We dont need them, just as we dont really need the 3d glitch. This isn't really about what we need, now is it? It's about having more options. Why not just a "Press and hold button to add or remove stuff from selection" (as with your mouse) Not sure what you're talking about. I was talking about being able to select what you glue or unglue to and from what object. That way, you wouldn't glue an object to anything to which you didn't want it to be glued and you wouldn't accidentally unglue an object from a necessary component of that object........... | 2010-03-04 01:02:00 Author: MMLgamer Posts: 183 |
All great suggestions there. All we need now is for Mm to implement them all. 1 more thing that really annoys me is the box that's on screen when you're setting the zone for cameras is way too faint and i have real trouble seeing it at times. Surely that must be so easy to make thicker and more visible. Of course we're still waiting for much better cameras anyway but it doesn't look like we'll get them anytime soon if ever! | 2010-03-04 02:05:00 Author: mistervista Posts: 2210 |
All those are very great ideas! Good job! *remove that freaking noise when in pause* Its really... REALLY bothering me. I can't agree more! Hate that noise... they should remove the pause "lines" (don't know how to call these) on the top of the screen too! | 2010-03-04 02:26:00 Author: dajdaj03 Posts: 1486 |
... they should remove the pause "lines" (don't know how to call these) on the top of the screen too! Then I would never know why my logic stops working!! | 2010-03-04 02:42:00 Author: RoharDragontamer Posts: 397 |
?? There still would be the pause icon in the corner of the screen... so that you know you're in pause mode... | 2010-03-04 03:15:00 Author: dajdaj03 Posts: 1486 |
*AutoBack* Almost every editor I have worked with (and even other applications like "Word" has this option. Autoback will automatically back up your level every "X" minutes, up to "Y" amouths of backups before the first one will be overwritten. I would love to have this but only if I was able to turn it off, great idea. "Ungrabable dissolve" I know, I didnt want to talk about materials, but i dont get why there is no ungrabable dissolve and having to use a brain just because i dont want my dissolve to be grabbed. Let's also a an indestructable and grabbable material while we're at it. The rest of the ideas are all really great and those *Border-options* are something I would have never thought of but now I really want them. | 2010-03-04 09:20:00 Author: SR20DETDOG Posts: 2431 |
Let's also have an indestructable and grabbable material while we're at it. And it has to float in water! | 2010-03-04 16:54:00 Author: Kern Posts: 5078 |
i have sugjested a few of these *Organised sticker menu and *Use keyboard for setting speeds/lengths/time* just a fyi if you look at my posts not to bother you the others are good ideas | 2010-03-04 18:22:00 Author: WESFUN Posts: 1336 |
Its a good thing it got double posted then. Imho the more people want something, the better the odds something might make it trough in an update. | 2010-03-04 19:03:00 Author: Luos_83 Posts: 2136 |
Read and Update MM! Update Update Update! EDIT: And I too HATE th pause noise, and the lines. SO FRUSTRATING. Isn't the little pause sign in the corner enough? | 2010-03-04 21:20:00 Author: Plasmavore Posts: 1913 |
All these ideas are great i wish MM would read this so they know what to change in the next creator pack. | 2010-03-04 21:22:00 Author: lbpholic Posts: 1304 |
I guess, theres like a 30 % chance MM wil read this problably, but Its obvious they will most likely fix the sticker Virus lol. | 2010-03-04 22:46:00 Author: Bloo_boy Posts: 1019 |
Added update 3 and some other suggestions. | 2010-04-26 15:26:00 Author: Luos_83 Posts: 2136 |
The touch switch would be so handy, why isn't it in there already?! Sounds have the ability to be set to on impact, surely touch switch would just be a more sensitive version of this as on impact sounds go off if sackboy bumps into them. Mind boggles, simple things like this are usually taken for granted but you notice when they are missing for sure. Hopefully there is a creator pack 2 and MM have been looking at posts like this. Organising stickers is a must at this stage, and piston length is a joke, setting multiple pistons to 900s one after another is soul destroying. MM! Make these suggestions happen! | 2010-04-26 15:46:00 Author: OneEyedBanshee Posts: 1370 |
These all are Excellent suggestions. *Touch-Switch* Activates when Sack and/or object touches the object this switch is placed on. Maybe with an option "Activate when Sack enters/exits water" What about choosing sensitivity of this switch? *Score-counter switch* For instance, activates when player reaches a score of 1000. (good for pinball/arcade like games) Could you add to this suggestion option to exchange score to activate this switch? It would allow to use score as money. | 2010-04-26 15:50:00 Author: waD_Delma Posts: 282 |
I love every single one! Especially the Paintinator Ammo Type. | 2010-04-26 16:18:00 Author: PoD CREW Posts: 268 |
List needs a "Scroll through categories"-option suggestion. Press R2/L2 to jump to the next category (i.e Wood -> Stone or PotC -> MGS. Whatever you've set it to) | 2010-04-26 16:28:00 Author: Syroc Posts: 3193 |
Good ones, Ill add and politely write them down. Well.. Later today.. I am hungry and eating "Broodjes Kroketten" | 2010-04-26 16:40:00 Author: Luos_83 Posts: 2136 |
