The Metal Thread

Archive: 66 posts

I just want to say that I like heavy metal, but I'm not a 'hardcore' metal head or anything like that. I just like the AWESOME double bass pedal beats and the heavy guitar strumming rhythms and stuffs like that. My favorite metal bands are probably Slipknot (mostly because of Jordy Jordison), Avenged Sevenfold, Metallica, Judas Priest, Korn, Godsmack, and Breaking Benjamin.
Who else likes the heavy metal genre?

NOTE: I do not need people who don't like heavy metal to start spamming about 'I HATE HEAVY METAL ITZ LIKE SO FREAKIN' RETARDED!!!!!!!!!!! AAAAACH!!!' in my forum. I just want to have a nice, clean chat about who LIKES heavy metal.

From Deep Purple and Europe, to Burzum and Spawn Of Possession, through all that's between, count me in.
My favourite is ultra technical stuff, most tech/math death metal.

Also, you say you like double bass? Try listening to Master's Apprentices by Opeth. That intro'll get yeah!

I'd hardly consider Opeth death metal... in fact I wouldn't consider them that at all.

If you like ****ation, you will probably like Still Life, which is a very good concept album by them. They are beast

Good. If there's one thing I can't stand, it's repetitive blast beats, lyrics so over-the-top they come across as hilarious, and guitar all those machine gun guitar riffs that all sound the same.

Hmm didn't there used to be an old thread like this...? Anyways, yeah I can't not post here. Not only am I a big metal guy, but I also play the stuff too. But most of you should have figured that out from my avatar already.

I love metal ! My favorites are Evile, Exodus, Slayer and Morbid Angel!

I just saw Exodus last month for the first time at an Arch Enemy show. Good stuff, and I managed to score a guitar pick thrown by Arch Enemy's Christopher Amott.

Animals as Leaders, Opeth, Between The Buried And Me. Prog metal ftw! But I also like bands like Gojira and Tool is definitely up there.

Also, you say you like double bass? Try listening to Master's Apprentices by Opeth. That intro'll get yeah!

Prog metal FTW indeed! Opeth are one of the few bands that no matter how my tastes change, I always love their stuff.

I'd hardly consider Opeth death metal... in fact I wouldn't consider them that at all.

Opeth are both Death and Progressive, with elements of Folk... depends which album or even song you're talking about. Clearly their older stuff was more Death than their recent stuff. Ghost Reveries certainly isn't, and yet it's probably my favorite along with Blackwater Park. ****ation is something else entirely, but what happened there were enough studio tracks to fill a double album... so the softer songs with clean vox got put on ****ation and the heavy nasty stuff was put on Deliverance. Always found the reciprocal naming ironic...

Lately I've been listening to a lot of Amon Amarth (Twilight of the Thunder God) and the Black Dahlia Murder. Tech/math stuff isn't too much of my thing... I used to play in a math metal band, but their stuff is absolutely phenomenal and probably the closest I'll ever get to listening to grindcore.

On the shred side of things, I have Symphony X and Racer X (what's with all the X's??) on regular rotation in my car. Paul Gilbert and Michael Romeo ftw!

How right you are...

I'm happily surprised at how many prog / metal fans there are on this forum, what with it being about LBP and all. There's a lot more Opeth / DT fans than I expected too! I recently got to see Between the Buried and me, Opeth, '3' and Dream Theater when they toured last year... That was awesome Lately I've been listening to a lot of Tool and Symphony X. I wish they would hit up my area with a tour, so I could go see them too...

In Flames were so good back in the early 90s when they led the Gothenburg's wave.
They had intense melodies, striking acoustic passages, and a real personal sound, even among bands of the same area, like Dark Tranquillity, Crown Of Thorns (later The Crown), Eucharist, Sacrilege...now they're just good, but not awesome anymore, that's a pity, while Dark Tranquillity still rocks, even if the old days are sadly gone.

As for what regards Cradle Of Filth, I think they are one of the most proessional bands out there.
They know very well how to promote themselves, they release good albums consistently every year and a half, keeping up their quality and avoiding to sound stale; groundbreaking packages and AWESOME lyrics.
It's a strange band, maybe too much overshadowed by their look and their behaviour outside the stage.
I really loved them in the early days, until Dusk And Her Embrace, and I still like them a lot today, but they have undergone a Death Metal Tone that doesn't fit them really well.

While the older In Flames is better in my opinion too, I can get into the new stuff, too... it took awhile but stuff like the Come Clarity album can really grow on you...

And yeah COF are the kings of lyrical genius, other than the immortal Frank Zappa, but I won't go there cause it's a metal thread Cruelty and the Beast has to be my favorite... I can't think of a better black metal subject material and band to play it. Speaking of cof, the other day, I just realized that Swansong for a Raven was a sequel to Ghost in the Fog... and now feel the urge to listen to it like a dozen times in a row daily. Any band that can do that is a winner imo

Sorry for this bump/double post.

I needs helps. My band and I are still looking for some kind of song to cover at a show. We are going to play 2 originals and 2 covers. The cover we have already chosen is Vicarious by Tool but we still need one more

Anyone have any ideas for a song that would blow peoples minds - metal fans or not? BTW we're Instrumental for now.

Thanks if anyone responds

Or maybe The Throat of Winter? Or some Opeth....

I think that i you play Orion, the venue will be delighted.
i you play a cover you have to play something that you completely revolutionize (back in the days with my power metal band we used to play Spice Girls' Wannabe on speed with growling vocals on the verse and a falsetto chorus )or something that even the stones know.

Where exactly are you playing? If it isn't a venue for metal or whatever, like some pub or a random open mic night, playing Orion is not a good idea, and you should find somewhere else to play, or use something more melodic....

Or cover 'Watch This', because Slash's album is awesome, and a Slash instrumental is also awesome, especially with Dave Grohl on drums and Duff on bass....

Geez...with my complete and utter disappointment this thread always goes down, while I want it on the top, since METAL will NEVER DIE!!!
I always love to know new awesome bands, and even if I listen metal from a life, I still manage to know some cool bands that went under my radar, so I propose to everyone a little game.
You come here, listen the song I post, comment it, then post your song, possibly from a band that has not yet been mentioned or that is not on the last 5 pages.
Personally I will try to upload some very underground band that deserve to be more recognized.
I will post a lot of strange stuff too...beginning with the first song...

From Finland, folk humpa metal (very fun stuff for metal parties)

Cool that you accepted the game Fancy!

Sick stuff, I never heard of them, maybe because prog bands are a little underrated here in Italy.
I like the blend of jazz influences with the space vibe.
The guitar parts are awesome and don't sound the same prog stuf.

There's a prog band I absolutely love, but it's so underrated that it's even hard to find all their songs on youtube, still they're around from the early 90s.
Unortunately their awesome singer Mike Baker died the last year and his replacement it's not as great as he was...
Anyway

Wow, that is outrageously similar to Queensryche (vocally). And it kind of reminded me of Dream Theater instrumentally. I like it! lol

Try to search something from Shadow Gallery, they're awesome, they also have some Queen-ish background that never hurts.

Geez! what's up with vocalists today?
They're not bad but the singer ruins everything.

Since you mentioned Queensryche, I feel compelled to post something from one of the other pillars of earlier USA prog metal, my personal favourites, the band with the greatest vocalist ever, MIDNIGHT (RIP).
This band always gives me the chills.

I don't listen to guitar/instrumental projects a lot, but I enjoy them a lot anyway.
This guy is cool, his sound and style makes me think "Nevermore", that I'm 100% sure you know.
Maybe, you don't know what Warrell Dane did before, when he was young and produced by Dave Mustaine

I used to like metal bands like Metallica, AC/DC and Iron Maiden, but now I'm more into prog, psychedelic, rock (like Rolling Stones) and folk (Bob Dylan)

The metal music I've always hated and probably always will hate, is the generic hc-metal that is all about "We're people in plastic monster outfits my aunt put together!! GROWL!" and every band member playing a speed-metal solo at the same time. If you like that sort of music, that's your decision, but my oppinion about this is pretty unbreakable.

Nice choice. I actually new about that band for a while now; they really remind me of a clash between Dream Theater and Queensryche. Nice

Here's my next recommendation; The Great Plains by Scale the Summit.

So, now there's 2 metal threads with the same name? This could get confusing.

Anyway, I recently got more into the Scandinavian death metal scene. At least, I think it's death metal. Stuff like Dark Tranquility, Kalmah, Amon Amarth, Satariel, and Children of Bodom come to mind, to name a few. Of course, I'm also getting into the power metal scene, like Manowar, In Flames, Falconer, and Hammerfall. I'd post some YouTube videos, since that seems to be the thing to do in this thread, but I'm lazy. Go find them yourself. ^^

EDIT: I'm dumb. I just read Omega's post which explained all the videos everywhere. So, I found one. Enjoi.
