Into The World of Thoughts and Creativity: A Member's Review/Guide/Advice

Archive: 18 posts

LittleBigPlanet, the award winning game, has been helping players achieve feats they thought impossible: being recognized for their passion of art, creativity, and gaming.

Hello, I'm CyberSora, and this is a review/guide/advice for newcomers who don't know how to play, or further more even know what LBP is. In this "reguivice" (review-guide-advice), I'm going to talk (or type) about LBP PSP, for it is new, and elements of the game has changed. I will cover its history, its gameplay, tips of creating, how to do certain things, and what will make you stand above the rest.

Chapter 1

LittleBigPlanet PSP is the PSP version of critically acclaimed best PS3 game of 2008, LittleBigPlanet. The game has been released in the month of November, 2009. Though it was praised with many good reviews, some saw the ?bad-side? of LBP PSP. Create mode for the game was reported ?bad? and ?lacked the PS3?s LBP feeling?. Although it suffered the essential PS3 Create mode, it succeeded in bringing both creativity and gaming together in a blended mix of both emotion and talent. To this day, LBP in PS3 has about 2,000,000 levels published, and is still growing.

The fate of the LBP PSP community is in the hands of the players, and with that, only the most talented creators can represent the community?s glory, and only the most willing-to-learn players will help the great community of LBP PSP outshine other games and open up the new genre in gaming: Play.Create.Share..

Chapter 2

First off, welcome to the world of LBP PSP. You might have noticed that many great creators have come from this site. This is because here, we love to help others reach their goals, and in return, they help us. Let?s start off with a summary of the LBP for PSP forums and the site itself.

LBP for PSP forums are consisted of five forums: [PSP] News and Media, [PSP] Level and Objects Showcase, [PSP] Community Contest, [PSP] Suggestions, [PSP] Ideas and Projects, and Everything Else LBP for PSP. You might already know how to post a thread in its correct forum, but just in case, here?s the rundown.

*[PSP] News and Media is only for certain things on the internet, television, magazines, etc.. Examples of this would be threads like ?U.S. PSN Store Gets Exclusive DLC? or ?Cambridge Updates Community?. Remember, all threads must relate to LBP PSP in some sort of way, and no, games for PSP do not count (unless they have something referring to LBP PSP, like ?Sackboy Featured in Hot Shots Golf?.

*[PSP] Level and Objects is a wonderful forum that will be your shining stage. As if by magic, people will kindly play and give you feedback on your level. You will be able to participate in F4F (Chapter 3) and contest if you wish, but only if you are a registered member of this site. Furthermore, it's the forum that lets you share your creations and, if you proved yourself a great creator, your level will be in the Community Spotlight (Chapter 3).

*[PSP] Community Contest is the place for members to gather around and prove their skills in whatever challenge they tackle. Here, you make the contests (of course, other members also make contests, so keep a look out). From "Make A Level", to "Get The Highscore" challenges, this forum is perfect for you to interact with others competitively, and let's face it; who doesn't want to have that winfeeling once in a while?

*[PSP] Suggestions forum is for threads like ?Lights and Lighting Controls? and ?I Want to Sticker My Sackboy?. Although, you may think it's just to rid the thought from your shoulders, but LBPCentral does have MediaMolecule employees registered on the site, so you might get your request granted.

*[PSP] Ideas and Projects is an ideal place for you to ask for both help on a project and/or just sharing an idea. Remember, though, this forum is for ideas and projects for levels, not for ideas for the game itself. That topic is better off in [PSP] Suggestions.

*Everything Else LBP for PSP is anything to do with LBP PSP. It can be ?My Sackboy Costume?, or ?Who Loves LBP?, or even ?My Review on LBP PSP?. Just remember that no ?naughty bits? or rude comments are allowed, and that there?s a line between a good thread and just plain old spam.

Now that you know the forums, you can be a bit more familiar with the system and maybe even a bit more active on the site.

Chapter 3

So, you think you be a creator of many talents, huh? Well if you already have hands on experience with LBP PSP, then you can give this site a shot. Registered members get to share levels and help each other out. It's our thing. So to get started on your level presentation, just head over to the LBP for PSP forums (Chapter 2) and begin your creator crusader adventure. Oh, and if some members give you a nickname, then don't take it personally. We're friends here.

Sharing Your Level
Nothing gets you more plays and hearts than showing the world your level. If you noticed the [PSP] Level and Objects Showcase forum, you can show your level there. Simply click the +Post New Level/Object button and fill in the form on the next page. Please be advised that H4H (Heart for Heart) and Anti-H4H (Anti-Heart for Heart) isn?t all to popular in the forums, so try to steer away from it.

What about screenshots and gameplay videos?
You can add screenshots and videos of your level if you want to. If you don't know how to get screenshots because you lack a camera, or any reason, then just ask around. We got plenty of people happy to get you some screenshots and gameplay videos. Just make a thread in the Everything Else LBP for PSP forum asking for these things, and you?ll get a reply soon. Either that or find a thread that offers the service (using the search bar will help).

Okay, but what if I don't have wireless internet? How do I share my level then?
Sigh. I don't like the option myself, but try FullMoon.

Use FullMoon with 2.03 (http://littlebigmods.net/showthread.php?622-Use-FullMoon-with-2.03&highlight=fullmoon)

It's a risky application that allows people who don't have wireless internet, but still have a computer with internet connection, to share their levels online. It's only a ?no other way? choice, because using FullMoon can put your level in risk of thievery. Since hackers lurk the FullMoon world, it's easy for them to steal your level and claim it their own. So please, under any circumstances, do try to find another way to publish your level online. Maybe a free Wi-Fi caf?, or even your friends house, but just try to use the wireless internet way before you go to FullMoon. As mentioned before, it's a only a ?no other way? choice.

Wow, that?s risky, but enough of that. What was this F4F you mentioned in Chapter 2?
Oh that, I?m glad you asked, for we now head on to the F4F section!

F4F
Feedback for Feedback, F4F, is a great system in LBPCentral that allows the members to share feedback with each other. The way it works is when a member (member #1) asks for feedback for their level, another member (member #2) will give them feedback. In return, the other member (#1) must go and play the member?s (#2) own level and leave feedback for them as well. Here?s an example:

*We?re at CyberSora?s ?F4F: The Epic Tale of My Epic Level? Epic!? level thread.*

CyberSora: ?F4F: The Epic Tale of My Epic Level? Epic! Please play and leave feedback!?
You: ?Love the epic boss battle, though if you can just tweak the epic thingy, just so thingy won?t counter act the other thingy that?s next to the other epic thingy? thingy! I rate it 5 stars!?
CyberSora: ?Thanks! I?ll be sure to play your level!?

*Now we?re at your ?My Level of Awesome Sauce!? level thread.*

You: ?My Level of Awesome Sauce! Please play my first level! Oh, and leave feedback!?
CyberSora: ?I liked the part of awesome sauce man comes out. I only find the crab miss out of place. That?s all. I gave it 5 stars!?
You: ?Thanks! I?ll make sure that crab is dinner when I?m done.?

Okay, thanks for that? err? okay example. But how do I F4F?
An ?okay? example? You think after all that hard work? oh wait, what? Oh yes, the question. What do you mean? Didn?t you read my ?okay? example? Isn?t it bad enough that you dare criticize me on my thread? I can?t believe that you, an ungrateful little?

No, no. I meant that thing in your example. In your level ?F4F: The Epic Tale of My Level? Epic!?, there?s a F4F symbol on the title. How do you get it, and why do you need it?
Oh? I didn?t mean?.

It's okay, just answer my question before this thread gets too long.
Right, sorry. The F4F symbol is something members use to show that their participating in F4F, so people who want feedback on their level will just go and feedback the F4F participant, knowing that the participant will have to give them feedback. It's a good system really. To get involved, click on the +Post New F4F Level/Object button, and then fill in the form in the next page. It's the same as filling in a normal level thread, the only difference is the F4F rules apply now.

Which are?
Well, I don't want to say all of them, because it's the responsibility of the members to go the thread themselves. It's located in the [PSP] Levels and Objects Showcase forum (it's the sticky thread). But, here?s a rule you should know:
If you fail to give feedback to someone who gave you feedback, you can suffer consequences like warnings, suspension, or you can even get banned.

Banned? As in the account?
Banned as in the IP address of your account, meaning that you cannot create another account from you internet ever again.

Dang.
I know. Well let?s not waste too much time on this topic; we still need to go on with Community Spotlights. Onward we go?.

Community Spotlight and Creator Spotlight
LBPCentral personally take the opportunity to show off its member?s levels. In Community Spotlight, a hand-picked assortment of levels is displayed every 2 weeks, and as a result, the spotlighted creators? reputation goes up. When that reputation reaches sky high, they get the opportunity to be in the Creator Spotlight, where they?re interrogated- I mean interviewed (yes that?s good) about their habits, ideas, LBP related things, and personal facts. To be inducted in the ?The Archives of Fame?, follow these rules:

* Community Spotlight ? As mentioned before, the [PSP] Levels and Objects Showcase forum is your stage, but to get the spotlight on you, you must have a popular level (this is where F4F helps a lot). You cannot ask for your level to be spotlighted, because spotlighted levels are earned, not begged for.

* Creator Spotlight ? You must show you got the skills, the heart, and the levels. As mentioned above, you cannot ask for the spotlight to shine on you. You must earn it, no matter how long or large the feat is.

What if I bribe them?
?. Do you want to get banned?

Umm, no.
Good. The only way you can be sure to be in the next spotlight is if you become an active member here. Your reputation will build up, and your levels will improve with the help of the community. So don't fear the possibility of not being spotlighted because of your lack of experience, because you?ll find great help here. You?ll get there soon. On with the ?reguivice?!

Chapter 4

Good to see you read on friend, seeing that this ?reguivice? is long and-

Friend? Like I?ll add you.
Harsh? I was just saying you can use some help from some of the members here. We?re all friends here.

Wait, what? Why do you think it was harsh? That is a bit ole? sarcasm wasn?t it?
Well, yes, you?re right! But I meant I was doing sarcasm, not you.

I am you.
But you?re acting like a newcomer, not me. So let?s keep that point of view that way. You?re allowed to sarcastically make comments, but not as much as me, okay? So, let?s get to the tips.

Corner Editing
This is your best friend in LBP PSP. It is your lifesaver, your key of destiny, your pixel data of 480x272 TFT LCD. You must harness the power of the Corner Editor, and make it your daily tool. You must feel the Editor, see the Editor, hear the Editor? taste the Editor! Well, not really, but you get the main point, and I cannot stress this enough: The Corner Editor is the #1 thing in LBP (PS3 and PSP) that separates the novices from the experts!

First off, to be familiar with the Corner Editor, try some practice runs. Get into Create Mode and place a block anywhere in the level. Now go into your Tools Bag and click on the Corner Editor. Now press ?X? on the block, and drag one corner down half way the height of the block. After that, get the other corner and this time drag the corner until you see the top side of the block become horizontally straight. Here?s a picture for you to see in case you don't know how it's supposed to look like:

Practice 1 (http://img444.imageshack.us/img444/3374/tutorial3l.jpg)

I did it!
Congratulations! Now try to make this shape now. As you can see, we?re moving on to the more difficult stuff, but it's actually really simple editing. To start on the next one, place another block. From that, make a triangle by dragging the top part of the square upward, then drag the two bottom corners to the sides as shown below:

Practice 2 (http://img192.imageshack.us/img192/8276/tutorial1jc.jpg)

Okay, I got it! So am I an expert now?
I?m afraid not. You still need to understand the abilities of the Corner Editor. You learned that the Editor is able to drag certain corners to make straight lines. Now you?re going to learn how to drag the corners to make some curves. Start by placing another block, and then drag the top part of the block upward like before. Now this time, get the sides of the triangular shaped form and drag them to the sides. Afterwards, drag the middle part of your ?half hexagon? shape and drag it to the sides, and then follow it up by getting the top part sides that are near the peak and drag them to the sides. Get the peak and then drag it down, as shown below:

Practice 3 (http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/4452/tutorial2h.jpg)

Wow that?s mighty confusing.
Well Corner Editing is a big tool with big skill requirements. These include: patience, planning, logic, carefulness, and a steady hand at some points. Although making curves can easily be obtained by the circle brush, it's always good to know how to make curves with the Corner Editor, because you never know when you?ll need to revisit that area and edit it again. See if you can make this area using the Corner Editor. When you feel that you have come close to creating this area, then you can consider yourself a ?Corner Editor Gadder?.

Template (http://img51.imageshack.us/img51/7629/block2e.jpg)

You can rank yourself through this ratings score I made:

* Corner Editor Novice - If you are able to make straight lined polygons.
* Corner Editor Gadder ? If you are able to make curves, an average Gadder?s simple task.
* Corner Editor Pro - If you can make scenery with just the Corner Editor (like my template above).
* Corner Editor Expert ? If you can successfully edit around the scoreboard, a small but difficult feat.
* Corner Editor Crusader ? If you can create a level with mostly Corner Edited items, use the Corner Editor to make switches and other gizmos, and Corner Edit around stickers and your other objects, then you have outdone yourself and moved up with the Crusaders.

Remember, you must accomplish each one in order, from top to bottom. Once you reach Corner Editor Crusader, you?ll be able to make the most astonishing levels out there.

Wow, that?s a big challenge.
All the greatest things in life come with a challenge. Let?s move on now.

Stickers
Ah yes, stickers. These handy little pieces of joy allow you to decorate your level with fun and creative stickers. Be sure to use these, because they will save your life.

Why, because the world?s going to end if I don't?
No, because PSP will die without them? yes the world?s going to end, your creative world! Need I remind you that this game is about colorful creativity, expressing your inner most ideas and emotions. Stickers will show that you can take something as bland as a cardboard wall and turn it into a must have brick wall! Oh, and yes, the first sentence was sarcasm (hey, I did say a bit ole? sarcasm).

Oh, sorry. I just didn?t see much importance in those sticky little things.
Well believe it or- oh wait, copyrights, darn! Well just imagine the LBP world sticker less. As you can imagine, it will be dull. See, the members here thrive on stickers, and as you can see, some of the best levels around involve endless amounts of sticker use. So you must understand that the sticky little things are the sole essence of the level?s detail and decoration. Without them, our levels will be boring and equal, something the LBP community will not tolerate.

Well, enough sticky talk, we got more to cover.

Switches, Bolts, and other Tools
As you know, we can?t have a level without switches, because how else will you challenge the player? So, let?s go over some things.

?Some?? Why ?some??
Because I?m too good to put much work into this ?reguivice?.

Is that sarcasm?
Why yes it is, and that?s something you?ll need to know in LBPCentral, and that is to spot sarcasm. But enough of that, I need to keep this thing rolling.

So, the question: I want to give you a short rundown on this, because there are guides in these forums, and if you?ve been online with you LBP PSP, you?ll find that a Cambridge employee has made tutorials for beginners like you. If you want to check them out, just type in ?Tutorial? in LBP PSP, and click on the ones AceCreator has made. You can also search some guides on this site by using the search bar, or you can click on the links below (Chapter 5).

Anyways, when creating with switches, you need to understand the situation. Like an elevator, for example. You're going to need the player to up the elevator, but in the case that the player dies, you need to come up with a solution as to make the elevator keep moving, even though the player is dead. So, trivia time:

What do you use to make an elevator keep moving?
(a) Two-Way Switch
(b) Dissolved Material with Inverted Magnetic Key Switch
(c) Sticker Switch
(d) All of the Above

Easy... (a).
Correct!

Yes! I knew it...
But you're also kind of wrong.

Wait, what?
Yes, (a) is an option, but in LBP PSP, there's many combinations of switches and pistons. So many in fact, it's hard to think of them all.

So wait, all those options-
Can perform your desired action? Yes, yes they can. So, I'll explain some simple combinations to you (again, available on the site and on AceCreator's profile).

First off, a Permanent Switch is made when you place any material that is Dynamic (the Square Brush is perfect for this, and a block is preferred) on top of a Dissolve material (again, blocks are preffered). When the Dissolve... "dissolves!"... it let's the top materail drop. Well Creators use this to their advantage by combining Magnetic Switches and keen physics to it. Here's a Permanent Switch template if you want to make a simple one for yourself:

Permanent Switch Template (http://img192.imageshack.us/img192/2438/permanentswitch.jpg)

Just remember: If you don't succeed at first, try and try again. That or just wish you knew how to create better, but I wouldn't risk the corrupt wish, so stick to the first one.

So yes, the endless possibilities of combining pistons and switches is what makes this game so outstanding! You can make elevators with pistons, invent a calcualtor with switches, and you can even make a walking machine (Chapter 6)!

Wow!
I know. that's why LBP is still dominating the creative world.

Other Advice
Okay. Well as for the advice thing you mentioned, can you give me some pointers in what my level should have?
Oh, you should totally add ?Anti-H4H? signs.

Really?
Ya, and everybody LOVES ?scorpians?, and ugly corner editing with no stickers attached in the level. And while I?m being sarcastic, I advise you to not even name your level.

Sarcasm hurts you know.
Sorry, but that?s another rule here: sarcasm is used A LOT here. So I?m already going to end this section, seeing that we fulfilled our goal. BUT, I would like to thank Taffey?s thread for the sarcastic ?advice?, seeing that-

Taffey? Like the candy?
Umm? let?s just get something clear: Yes, some names are weird, and some are awesome. BUT, all the same, Creators come in any size and name (and Taffey's the Grammar Nazi, so don't misspell too much in front of him). So don't make fun of their names? poking some fun at them is good enough.

Poking some fun, eh? Well then, why did you call yourself CyberSora? Was CyberSoda taken up? Why not call yourself Cy-
OKAY, MOVING ON!

Chapter 5

Now, you probably made a level you feel is worthy of a Spotlight. Well, to be in the Spotlight, you must be unique. Bomb survival levels aren?t to unique, so try to steer away from these ideas. Still, if you want to be sought out as ?Hey look, it's that Creator?, then show the world of LBP PSP that you are that Creator, that you have the creativity and skills to be considered unique and maybe even a trend-starter. Be different, and SHOW it.

Well thanks for that intro. But you said ?How To?, so why are you telling me to show my talents? Aren?t you going to help me?
That?s the thing; do not depend on the community TOO much. There comes a point when you alone must solve the puzzles of imagination, and you alone are the one with the mind of spectacular and spontaneous thoughts!

I can only go so far in helping you, for the rest of the experience is up to you. However, that doesn?t mean I, and the community, won?t give you a helping hand once in a while. Never the less, this section is dedicated in helping you in making your level stand out, so I?m going to try to mustard every knowledge I can about this topic. So here we go.

Names
Not much to say, but your level?s name must have a lot to say. If I made a level about a scorpion boss, but my level?s name says ?The Battle?, people will wonder ?What battle?? and ?Not another random level??. So keep it unique, and keep it informative. In other words, let the level?s name tell the tale, and make it an eye catcher.

Description
Well, much like the level?s name, you need to describe your level in this summary area. Explain the situation, or just simply tell the player what lies ahead. No spoilers though! You want the player to play the level because of curiosity.

Icon
Really, it's no big deal, but it helps alert players to certain elements. If you decide to make a level in the jungle, then make the icon a plant or parrot. It helps the player picture the level before playing.

Objects
To make your level a hit, make the objects in it, don't just use pre-made ones. In fact, practice and make an object so amazing, that it's a prize for those who Ace the level, or those who sign-up at LBPCentral and enter a contest. That will help your level get more plays, and get more members here, too.

Prize Limit
Prizes are good, but don't give away something you don't want being used a lot, or claimed often. This happens a lot in LBP, so make sure you're careful of what you make a prize. Also, don't put too much prizes in one level, because that's taking away the specialness in a prize. The fewer the prizes, the more the appreciation players will give you for making a certain complex prize.

Don?t Make It Copyable
This is just an excuse for the vultures that lurk the community, just to feast on the level and claim it theirs. So don't make your level Copyable, unless it's important, like maybe a contest that requires that template, or just a tutorial that you feel like the player needs to explore in Create Mode.

Finishing Touches
Play the level yourself. When you understand what the player goes through, you can wonder what else can make it stand out more. We have some members here willing to beta test the level for you.

The Finale
Post it here! As you noticed, many of the popular levels come from here, and that?s mainly because the Creators here are spreading word about their level. So do the same, and post your level here and there, and by there, I mean at littlebigplanet.com and littlebigland.com. So don't be shy, spread the word!

Chapter 6

So, I would like to thank the community for providing these essentials that help create such awesome Creators. I also like to thank the authors of the threads mentioned in the links. Finally, I would like to thank myself, seeing as I was asking myself tough questions (with a bit ole? sarcasm).

I hope this helped you guys. If there?s something you didn?t like, for example a link you wish I remove (or my sarcasm and humor), then post it here. You?re free to add your own advice, too. After all, I?m trying to make this the ?Ultimate Reguivice?, so feel free to suggest changes. See ya later!

This is an amazing guide and I hope you'll help it evolve like the pet peeve thread.

Which you might want to start doing now, as there's a new thread for contests.
Great work.

Also, was the FullMoon site shut down? I clicked the link to finally check this out (after all, without being able to see how creations work, I can't really have success with Rip-off Renegades).

And do you mind if I make this available on my site? I'll give credits!

I know I'm kind of hogging the thread here, but since most of this seems staged like a conversation, could you bold it as such? Would make it a lot more readable.2010-03-03 02:54:00

@BlueBullet (if I can still call you that)
Post it in your site! As long as I see new faces here and there.

As for bolding, I only bold for important things and names. So if 'm going to bold something, then might as well bold everything. Don't worry, I'm going to edit it though.

@jeffcu
Thanks! I never got nominated for the "Sticky Awards"!

Thanks for putting this all together CS - really good writeup and great organization.

I dub this The Official LBPC LBP PSP FAQ. (Uh oh, I'm getting an "excessive acronym" warning here on my computer.)

Now we have a place to point newcomers to the site!

This is mighty helpful for newcomers...and you know...sticky-worthy!I totally agree! If anything could use a stickification, it's this thread.

@Everybody
Thanks! But also give credit to the authors of the thread links, and to the people who contribute to the "reguivice" themselves!

@moonwire
Thanks for that comment! I appreciate my hard work paying off.

@Cybercora:

Lol, is that a misspell or are you "poking fun" at my name?

What an awesome guide. Everyone should read it before starting creation in LBP PSP. I'm sure it will prove very useful for new creators.2010-03-07 00:13:00

I'm glad I can help! Hearing that from you is pretty much getting a sign of approval here.

Thanks for that acronym! By the looks of it, I didn't leave to much grammar erroes too!

Lol, I think you need to ask ConfusedCartman for anything to be stickified.

Hey CyberSora,

There seems to be a general consensus that this is one mighty useful thread. If you already hadn't done so, would you like for me to ask CC on your behalf?

Well to be honest, I didn't even try to tell CC to stickify it. I thought the best comment I would have gotten would have been "Great guide!" or at least 4-5 stars. Guess I was wrong. Never have I gotten asked for stickifying.

Sure, go ahead. I'll be honored!
