Halp Linux has attacked my pc

Archive: 7 posts

My computer was a complete mess and needed reformatting so i ended up installing Ubuntu.
I read an article telling me how Linux is some divine OS that descended from the heavens and is perfect in every way, so i thought what the hell.

It wasn't quite as good as they made it out to be ._.

Is there anyone here that has experience using Ubuntu because i've never felt more lost using my computer, and i thought i'd be computery enough to understand this stuff.
It'd be nice to get some real help getting the basics over with, most support forums only seem to offer helpful information such as "be an expert".

That is indeed the issue with linux I'm far from an expert but use ubuntu on a daily basis and never have any issues with "the basics". What exactly are you trying to get done at the moment?

Well i'm having trouble doing simple downloads at the moment.

I can follow a trail of "download" links and never find the link to the actual file. Instead i get tons of weird addresses and package things telling me to add it to my sources list or waffle some stuff into that terminal thing.

This is what i'm trying to download at the moment http://packages.ubuntu.com/karmic/emesene

The closest i got to downloading seemed to be a list of mirrors which didn't work. It told me to download a program called synaptic which would make it easier... and when i went to download that i got the exact same problems, which it told me to download synaptic to make easier. It wanted me to download synaptic to help download synaptic basically ._.

Thankfully i'm back on XP now!

Gawd pretty much everything i'd read about linux that lead to me installing it was a lie. User friendly, helpful community... don't even get me started.
I was told it was unbreakable too, try telling that to the ton of error messages i got after trying to install my sound drivers.

I'm sure it's brilliant for just viewing files or keeping servers stable, but for home use it's pretty much useless unless you're determined to spend hours each day trying to decipher how to complete simple tasks while nerds yell at you from their forums.
I'm not joking, even the people trying to sell off popular linux programs came across as being antisocial, whoever wrote some of the adverts that i saw obviously doesn't know how to talk to other people >.<

That's the end of that anyway, maybe i'll check back in a year or 2 when it's been improved a lot more

Even when it's "improved more", you aren't gonna find yourself in any better position if you aren't interested in learning how to use it lol. And the fact that you know what you are doing with windows isn't gonna help that in the slightest. In fact it will make it worse as you need so much more more knowledge to get yourself up to par with where you are on Windows. For the record, I did pretty much the same thing as you when I first tried using Linux - tried it on a whim with no knowledge of what I was doing and decided the learning curve was too steep and jacked it in

In honesty, unless you have very special requirements for computer use and have the time to learn a new OS then just stick with what you know

I just wanted a more reliable community developed OS that didn't have some mega-corporation sticking it's hand in my wallet, i'm sure that's what Ubuntu strives to be
I think compatibility is the issue, pretty much every problem i had with it involved something that i needed that wasn't compatible with Linux.

If it had that and a nicer community then i think it'd be a pretty neat OS
