SD Gundam – Zaku Survival

http://www.daviddino.com/lbpzakuvsgundam.jpg

Synopsis
Are you a bad enough dude to pilot the fabled Zaku II S into a storm of Federation Mobile Suits and become the Red Comet? SD Gundam – Zaku Survival will pop you into Char Aznable’s mask and allow you to show those Feddies why they call you “the Red Comet!”

Based on events from taken from the 0079 Mobile Suit Gundam lore, SD Gundam – Zaku Survival will have a lone sackboy pilot a Zaku II S and destroy Federation machines in sections of escalating difficulty. As players complete a section filled with certain enemy types, their rank will increase, ultimately awarding the player the title of “The Red Comet” if they complete the level. But remember, you only have one Zaku so use your speed and cunning to send yourself into Universal Century LBP history!

Features - Zaku II S

Replenishable health system
The Zaku II S can withstand 45 hits before destruction. Health status can be reviewed through either the strength of the Zaku eye’s brightness and through audible notifications. This health can be replenished the player finds a health pod. The health will be restored to nearly full status as indicated by the Zaku eye returning to full brightness.

Newtype flash
A flash will appear above the Zaku in the event a powerful weapon is shot in the player’s direction, warning the player to evade as needed.

How to Play

Controls

Hold R1 – Beam machine gun. If held for too long, the gun will overheat causing a cooldown period of 5 seconds

Tap R1 – Zaku dummy. An inflatable Zaku clone that can allow minor defense for a small amount of time. Only one can be used at a time.

Circle – Change directions. Pressing circle will allow the Zaku to switch from right to left and vice versa for optimal shooting and view positions.

Enemies
Salamis-class cruisers
Ball/Ball “Commander” type
GM
Blue Destiny Unit 01/02
White Base/RX-78-02 Gundam/RX-77 Guncannon

Sections
The level will be set up in multiple sections. Each section will include a certain subset of enemies that must be defeated before the player can move on.

Section 1
Salamis Cruiser x 2/Ball x 4/GM x 2

Section 2
- Salamis Cruiser/Ball “Commander” Type x 2/Ball x 4

Section 3
- Blue Destiny 01/Blue Destiny 02/Ball x 02

Section 4
- White Base/Gundam/Guncannon

Winning Conditions
- Defeat all the enemies =P

Losing Conditions
- You die =P

All I really need to do now is build the cruisers and the White Base. Other than that, I should be done very, very soon! Also, once PSN comes up again, I'll drop an open demo for you guys to try out.

I think I've finally come up with the kind of mecha action I've been aiming for and I hope you guys feel the same. Big ups to Gilgamesh for helping me with the circle function. :hero:

The controlling of the Zaku II S look very smooth and effective. The added bonus of changing directions with circle is pretty cool as well. I'm definitely looking forward to this.

I only suggest adding more to background areas. They seem lacking, but you could be facing thermometer issues which is understandable. A suggestion is to maybe lessen the sections, but perhaps add more detail to the remaining sections. This is purely my opinion, but I think could potentially improve the experience for players.

Looks good!

LOL, don't worry about the background. It's gonna get crazy. This was only a temporary background since I was more focused on finishing the enemies first. If you've seen my other levels, you'd know I don't chump out on visuals. ^^

I will admit though that I have used up 80% of the thermo already...

Oh, I have indeed. Your Mobile Suit Armorboy level blew me away...In fact, I featured it as a video on my channel a long time ago, if I recall. Playing that level with friends was a blast. Oh, yes, just found the video. Haha, it seems as though it was a time when I was careless of my commentary and video quality, but still a video nonetheless.

Thanks man! Since working with player tracking, I figured it could easily be applied to anything outside of being a "zero weight" circular object as long as stability could be achieved. Thankfully it has worked out a lot better than I had expected and adds a lot of personality to the enemies. And as you saw, some are more aggressive than others, especially when you get close to them.

I'll probably have to switch to my Slim in the living room to get this up. I built this on a 160GB Phatty which is essentially my LBP workstation, lol.

I got a slim so I got no problems but I have noticed that its gotten hard to connect with others on lbp now... the problem started for me last night same time as the phaty ps3 crashes ... I wonder if they connected

and watching the vid its too bad the only way I can hear that music while playing the level would be in create mode T_T I wish we could play music while playing

LOL, that reminds me of when I visited Mm studios last year and nudged Siobahn about finding a way to get the Gundam license. Too many good sounds and music to be had from there.

Anyway, sounds like the Phatty PSN problem is over so I don't need to transfer my files to my other Slim. I'll post the current build for you guys to check out when I get back home from work. =)

EDIT: Okay beta's up! The name is SD Gundam - Zaku Survival Beta 1.0... GO GO GO!

played the beta and here is what i got in order of appearance:

1. after the tutorial ended the dissolve material gate dissappeared and the ball next to it came at me...after defeating it it blew up new me and damaged the dummy balloon mechanism in my zaku (couldn't shoot dummies the whole level)

2. after destroying the bridge and entering a building i took out Command Ball and when i got too close and collided with it it broke my gun (no more shooting)

after that i just retreated my way to the scoreboard

those were the cons...now here are the pros:

1.great handling, felt like i was piloting a REAL armor and not using a giant mecha with a bunch of buttons
2.great balloon dummy, looked really cool and i assume it would draw attention away from you so that woulda been awesom
3.nice newtype jingle...took a second to realize it but after i figured out what that noise was i started enjoying it more
4.nice designs, the zaku is great and cool looking, loved how you implemented my light feature for the heat...and i LOVE how you used the grab switch as a hand, was very clever and it makes it visually appealing.

needs a touch of work on the issues but other then that you know me man, GUNDAM FAN, GEVURAH FAN so this was a superb level, 5star and hearted, going to try it one more time and i'll update if anything

EDIT: keep fighting the good fight my friend, white knight chronicles got some DLC, Gundam should be the NEXT STEP you can do it, JUST GOTTA BELIEEEEEVE

EDIT2: seems the gun is a bit too fragile towards collisions, after beating blue destiny GM i faced blue destiny gundam and my gun got destroyed again...i think it's the collisions since the GM that chased me to the scoreboard has his obliterated as soon as it crashed into me

Metal works, I just put it on right now and published it. No adjustments needed for the Zaku, but some were needed on the GMs. I'll properly put it on all the other guys later.

finished it this time with no breaks

only thing now is that the mobile suit is a little bit more heavier...so it can't make tight turns...and the COMMAND ball seems to have a weird cannon twitch like crazy

but still finished it with high score along wit you and jaeyden

I just changed the gun material to wood which is obviously lighter. I've also changed a couple background things in the Zaku to peach floaties to compensate for the change in weight. I've also fixed the Ball Commander's cannon as well. It was pretty inaccurate so I just changed the positioning of the sensor switch.

I'll be adding more changes to it today after work, like adding the White Base and possibly another enemy. The derelict space station look is progressing well so far!

Finally the waited beta! Tried 2 times, and I really liked it. Great and simple controls, the Circle thing is awesome. The "dummy robot" idea is cool, but it's a little weird, try some cow glitched materials to make it looks better! The enemies are very wel made, as the Zaku, and they are a good challenge! The first time, an enemy exploded and destroyed half Zaku, so I restarted. he second time I didn't find imporant bugs, only sometimes I got stuck in the enemies. The improvements of this mech are many, the only thing I like more in the older version was the look. This new mech is softer, small, and has better controls, but I'll like a plasma sword when I come near an enemy, or maybe a sort of shield. Nah, the shield isn't really important.
I've never seen the Gundam anime, but now I'm very curious about it...

Well dummies in Gundam are essentially balloon versions of the mobile suits they come from which is why the dummy looks the way it does in the level. I'm also happy you enjoyed the controls. The circle function (thanks Gilgamesh) really worked out well and saves the player lots of frustration when trying to figure out all the R1 controls. I'll probably add a close range weapon eventually. Glad you liked the beta so far!

The next level I'm drawing up will be featuring this guy...

I played this 3 times tonight - wow, man! Obviously, one thing that really excites me is when a mechanic really works well in LBP - and the controls are really tight here. I loved the new reverse switch (also worked well in Strikewing), and everything was responsive. Definite classic arcade action here - really got my adrenaline rushing flying as fast as I could and dog-fighting with the enemies. I also really enjoyed the more difficult enemies near the end - I always felt there was a strategy that I could use to take them down.

As regards play balancing, some of the later more difficult enemies seemed to be splraying so much plasma I sometimes couldn't see how to avoid it. However, I apologize if this is wrong - I may need to just practice a bit more

Glad you enjoyed it so far! I do plan on toning down the laser spam of the last couple as health will not be permanent in the final version. Even I have to head back and refresh a couple times because it gets intense at times! But you can see when they're going to relax on the attack as they have the same overheat mechanic as the Zaku. I suppose I could make the dummy larger to help compensate as it's supposed to be a shield (and it messes with the tracking of the Balls). Let me know if you have any other ideas to make it better overall.

Ultimately, I want to recapture the feeling of games like Metal Warriors on the SNES...

I'll check it out again tonight... I never really get tired of these kinds of games.

It was funny last night when I was playing it. My son was in the room and was getting frustrated and excited while I was playing it - "No, daddy! Don't go after those kinds of enemies! They're too hard! Go after the easy ones so you don't die!!!!!"

Haha, that's awesome. Glad to know it causes tension for everyone around you as well! My wife hates Gundam but after I forced the controller in her hand, she told me it was probably the easiest to control since helping me with the Steampunk Samurai. If I have her blessing, I think I'm good to go, lol.

I think I just need to reinforce the Guncannon's secondary weapons since they can break when flying around the White Base, which is this thing here...

http://www.daviddino.com/lbpzakusurvival01.jpg

http://www.mahq.net/MECHA/gundam/msgundam/pegasus.jpg

This thing is what you'll be trying to "capture" in the end, with the Guncannons and Gundam trying to stop you. It was really fun dodging and using the base as cover while the enemies were following me around the ship. Thankfully, I made the Gundam's tracking dynamic enough to attempt to surprise attack you as you continue to whittle him down in health. There have been a couple times I lose him and go searching for a bit, then... BAM from the top or from the bottom! There's no real set pattern to any of the enemies aside from following or evading, so each playthrough can be rather different in your approach. I'm also going to add a race gate as well, but I will make it so that you have to defeat all the enemies in a certain area before you can continue. The White Base is also going to have turrets so its imperative to dodge... a lot!

I'm at 90% now, but I think I'll be able to throw in some other cool things before its over, including different "ending rankings" depending on how far you get.

There will definitely be a lot more detail added to White Base. As for the enemies getting out of control, what exactly do you mean?

As for random damage to the Zaku, I actually encourage that. >=) There have been a couple times where I'm too close to a GM or Ball exploding and the legs get blown off! Glad you feel that way about the action though! I'll be adding a close range weapon as well for some good measure. ^^

And here's a random pic I took last night when testing out a few things...

Technically, you're right. =P

Regardless, glad you're still messing around with it. How's the responsiveness of the circle function? Thanks to Gilgamesh's help, I've sped up its activation speed. Dunno if that's noticeable though. Have there been other changes you've noticed that are either good or bad?

Not totally sure.... I would have to play it side by side for a true comparison. It's hard to tell whether the controls are getting better, or I'm simply getting better at the game. I DID notice the responsiveness in switching directions, but I didn't realize you changed it. I use the switching quite a bit because it "feels" more exciting flying by an enemy, flipping around, and attacking from the other side - sort of like dogfighting. I also started getting a better strategy for the harder dudes, which is a good sign for this kind of game.2010-03-06 02:37:00

Just retried it. The new circle system works pretty well... except that for some reason it doesn't seem to work at the beginning of the level. It only seems to be active once reaching the ship, though I have no idea why that is.

I managed to blow up an enemy white Gundam, and half of it was laying on the floor and continued shooting upwards. Also, something strange happened when I was fighting the crazy dark Gundam. I started constantly hearing the warning bell signifying that my health was low, but no matter how many times I was hit, I never blew up. After defeating that enemy, I tried to continue down the hallway but was blocked by something. I was eventually "squished" while attempting to break through whatever was blocking the way.

Starting to get the hang of avoiding the enemy's bullets, but I'm still not sure how to use the dummy properly. It's pretty fun when there's some wide open space and you can do some proper dogfighting.

Yeah, it's really rare but the health system does glitch in a weird way that you essentially become invincible. I have an idea to fix it, but we'll see.

As for the circle function not being as responsive in the beginning, its due to the proximity of the Zaku to the floaty rail. The closer it is, the less pull there is on the springs. It's all a matter of repositioning when the level is completed I suppose.

Yup.... something is definately broken - can't go all the way through the level anymore.

What exactly happens? Can you not move the Zaku after a certain point and how many times has it happened?

I just went in, played normally, and when I got a bit into the slightly inclining room (after you blow up the bridge).... you simply can't go right anymore - like the material that is attached to the piston that your dude is mounted on is blocked. I played twice and it happened both times. I'll try it again right now to see if it's still the case.

EDIT: Yup, still broken - something blocking going right in that room.

I've also modified the dummy to explode if you shoot it. The dummy will release a couple bullets in multiple directions once it explodes, so now there's more of a reason to use it. I've republished the level with these changes, so if you want to you can check them out. =)

And here's a pic of the revamped White Base...

http://www.daviddino.com/lbpzakusurvival03.jpg

You can shoot the engines in the back out. I'm going to add another part so you can shoot the bridge, effectively disabling the White Base and allowing you to proceed to the end of the stage.

That sucks. =( Hope it gets fixed soon!

Well, I've just uploaded the final beta. The core gameplay tweaks have been made, such as killing certain enemies to continue, destroying the whole White Base crew in the end to complete the level, etc.

And here some random shots I took as well...

Good luck! Lemme know what you think of the changes. It's probably going to be awhile before I finish this as I'm probably going to see if I can "cartoonify" the environment as much as I can. I've already completed the intro cutscene and control review sequence. All I need to finish now is the grading scale according to how fast you completed the stage and the ending sequences.

Almost there!

loved the new changes...didn't see the giant zaku II s or char's head but i guess those are for later?

anyways i got #1 next to you lol (lets see how long that lasts :/) anyways its looking good and i can't wait until it's fully completed

btw unrelated note you try using the white knight chronicles DLC to make anything gundamy? (like sackboy gundam armor lol)

Yeah, those are all in the cutscenes so those will show up later. I'll let you get a run on the final product before it goes "live" so to speak. Once I finish the grading system, I'll need your help to test it out. Obviously, the grades are going to be S, A, B, C, and D with different prizes given according to your rank.

Nah, I haven't. It's too... medieval looking to make anything decent, heh.

Hard work? =P

Give the beta try though and tell me what you think so far. It's called SD Gundam - Zaku Survival Beta 1.2.

I'm thinking about changing the name though to SD Gundam - Zaku Battle. Any ideas?

Well, when you get close to the first battleship, a speech bubble should show up saying, "Shoot the bridge!" Obviously, once you do that, the ship's hull will explode opening a path to the next section through it. Destroy the enemies in the next section and a gate will open up. I still have yet to complete some cutscenes which make these sequences more apparent, but there's no crazy trick to moving on aside from blowing certain things up.

I would consider it an Honour but i can't I don't exactly have a PS3 ;-;

Ouch! What happened?

Thanks man. I'm taking my sweet time with completing this. I've been watching a lot of Gundam episodes that take place in space to help capture that feel within the level. I'll probably have to simplify a couple things with the asteroid base, but we'll see how it goes. If the level comes off really well, I'll do a continuation where you actually use the Gundam instead, shield and all. :3

I'll also have another contest giveaway to the highest scorer... a Gundam Sackboy this time! The ultimate goal is to come up with a good system that emulates fast shooting action like the good 'ol SNES/Genesis days, so hopefully I can get there with y'alls help. :3

Haha, I was in the Army nearly 5 years ago, so I totally prefer military time. Definitely good to know!

If things go okay and the wifey doesn't want to do anything tonight, I might have the grading system up by 0000 PST.

I played it! Yaayy! It was a pretty awesome experience

as this is the beta i'd love to see the original version with a changeable gun i think that would be soooo cool, so like; Rocket Launcher: Small Clip before cooldown Lots of power. Machine gun; Same. Sniper; Long cool down really strong

but thats just my opinion

LOL! Honestly though, I think its a fluke. I think it has to do with the occasional rockets that hold up the enemies. When the enemy blows up, the rockets don't disappear when the brain is destroyed and they sometimes end up pushing onto the control box. This creates what I call the "death shake" really fast and next thing you know, you're dead. I might just get rid of the explosives altogether and emulate an explosion so that it doesn't happen, but we'll see. The Gundam is aggressive, but it's not that good to one-hit-kill you outright!

If not... it's because I made it so that if you physically get hit hard enough and the Zaku gets torn off the control box, you blow up instead of flying around with just a control box.

That's for the next level. Different mobile suits with different abilities like the ones you just mentioned. I have no more thermo for that! =P

EDIT: Okay! This time the final beta has been released, with pretty much almost all of the environment complete (except for the beginning), grading system, and modified enemy explosions. If you guys get a chance, please check it out soon!

ok beat it (first B then A ranking)

here's feedback so far:

pros:
sweet cutscenes
sweet backrounds
sweet mechs and ships
nice ranking system (although a bit confusing)
nice use of logic

cons:
1.green zakus sometimes make you turn around automatically...that combined with a jump(i think) makes you eject off the mech
2.machine kind of overheats a bit too fast in my opinion...suddenly its me waiting 3 seconds for the gun to cooldown and then fire again for 2 seconds, rinse and repeat
3.using the zaku balloon and shooting it makes for a rather akward technique where you spawn the balloon fast and shoot it and spawn another one as soon as you blew up the last one and do it again, pretty much makin the cool explosive attack into rapid fire which could lead to cheating
4.i get pushed to a wall or something and my zaku starts getting flipped over it self destructs...if thats supposed to happen then its ok but otherwise its an issue that could use some tweaking
5.collided with a ball cannon and broke it's cannon...then it rammed me and somehow sackboy got squished
6.this one is not really important but for those like me trying to get an S ranking the cutscenes do get a little bothersome when you want to just go in there and kick ***...so maybe a way to skip the cutscenes would be nice

that's all i could find for now, so other then that im loving it dude

question time:

i got ALL prizes EXCEPT for the 2nd one of the collectibles which i assume it's for S rank? or is there no S rank? and if so why positioned akwardly in the list? lol not complaining but i got RX798D-2 and D-1, RGM-79 GM and 77-2 guncannon and the MS-06 Zaku II but right in between the two blue destinies is a gap that is the prize im missing....so yeah thats what i wanna kno

1. I kept them in the 3rd layer to prevent them from getting in the way, but because the jetpack has to be in the third layer for it to work properly. Unless... I put the Zaku in the front glitch layer...

2. Well from full on cool to overheat, it can be held for 5 seconds. I'll update it to 7-8 seconds, but for me the key is short bursts.

3. In regards to the doing a crazy Zaku explosive attack to gain an advantage, I'm actually cool with that since I use it extensively in different ways to help push for an S Rank. I use it to blow off the Gundam's shield for example, instead of shooting it off. It's a really risky maneuver though doing it so close to yourself, so if someone pulls off what you're saying with relative ease, I'll be impressed.

4. In order to prevent a player from just flying around with a control box if the Zaku's wobble bolt breaks due to stress, I have it explode once the main body detaches from the control box. It's crappy, but the game's engine isn't exactly built for this kind of constant movement.

5. Again, fast movement with Sackboy in a confined space can lead to squishes. Can't really be helped I'm afraid since it's rather flukey.

6. With the cutscenes, I just smash through them with the circle, but of course I know exactly when they're coming. If anything, I can just make another level with no cutscenes as this one is totally maxed. I can't even add a text bubble or one key without it overheating.

As for the ranking, it's time based. Obviously the faster you beat the stage, the better your rank. Aside from the final section, you don't have to beat everybody to continue on. There are certain enemies you have to destroy, but it's up to the player to find out which ones they are. ^^

With the prizes, I think it's based on the order I captured them or something. Dunno why it's like that.

Regardless, thanks for hitting it up! I'll make the changes accordingly and let you get a run through before I publish it... which should be either tomorrow or Monday.

Oh yeah, you need to beat the level in less than 6 minutes from the time you start the race gate to entering the Chivvay in the end to get S Rank. =P But I think in the version you're playing it should be 6:30.

this

really its supposed to be realistic(so to speak)...i mean really...an explosion shouldn't make you or anything around you invulnerable know what i mean?

but yeah dont feel bad, its supposed to add realism to it
