Quick update fwiw

April's PS3 is the same model as mine, but about 8 months newer. It was logged on during the whole ordeal and in just checking it a bit ago, it logs in just fine. So it seems only those that logged in and got the error message are the ones affected as far as the older systems.

However, it might be also be that her firmware a bit different as well.

Ok i can't be bothered to read through 17 pages to find this information so here goes

Is it just happening in America or is it everywhere?
Is it safe to go online on my PS3?
Has this been fixed yet?

For now i'm not even going to turn my PS3 on.

My original sony playstation would only play if you turned it upside-down. So maybe that'll help.

AHhaha! We had that on my one. Then it got worse and we had to turn it upside down and then tilt the front left corner up about 2 inches. Good times

Mine did that too - lol - come to think of it so did my old Sega CD..... strange how they enjoyed inversion. lol

hahaha! Mine did that to towards the end of its life.

No.

Thanks for answering... hopefully they will be able to get a fix... otherwise there will be very few people with working PS3's for a very long time...

Problem is i can't go on my PS3 offline because it's wireless so it will just automatically connect to the internet.

Statement from Sony per Kotaku:

As you may be aware, some customers have been unable to connect to the PlayStation Network today. This problem affects the models other than the new slim PS3.

We believe we have identified that this problem is being caused by a bug in the clock functionality incorporated in the system.

Errors include:
* The date of the PS3 system may be re-set to Jan 1, 2000.
* When the user tries to sign-in to the PlayStation Network, the following message appears on the screen; "An error has occurred. You have been signed out of PlayStation Network (8001050F)".
* When the user tries to launch a game, the following error message appears on the screen and the trophy data may disappear; "Failed to install trophies. Please exit your game."
* When the user tries to set the time and date of the system via the Internet, the following message appears on the screen; "The current date and time could not be obtained. (8001050F)"
* Users are not able to playback certain rental video downloaded from the PlayStation Store before the expiration date.

We hope to resolve this problem within the next 24 hours. In the meantime, if you have a model other than the new slim PS3, we advise that you do not use your PS3 system, as doing so may result in errors in some functionality, such as recording obtained trophies, and not being able to restore certain data.

As mentioned above, Please be advised that the new slim PS3 is not affected with this error. We are doing our best to resolve the issue and do apologize for any inconvenience caused.

For the latest status on this situation please check either the PlayStation blog (blog.us.playstation.com) or PlayStation.com.

Problem is i can't go on my PS3 offline because it's wireless so it will just automatically connect to the internet.

Switch the router off for 2 minutes while the PS3 boots up and you disable the online.

It won't make any difference to a local clock error though.

Yikes... I smell class action lawsuit when this is all over. The fact that simply USING your fat PS3 could cause irreparable data damage is absolutely frightening.

It's worse than I thought O.o

just read this:

Its SONY's own Y2K bug.

My reckoning is that the computer thinks this year is a leap year and therefore has brough up a fault.

You can rectify this by resetting the CMOS thing inside your ps3....take the battery out for 10secs or more then return it, Voila.

I can allready smell the lawsuits for lost work
(or at least complaints)

resetting date yourself will result in clock not working.
I still think this is stupid.

after the Y2K bug and a few other time-related incidents in software..
You would think that Sony (and any other company for that matter) would have a server with a ps3 attached to it that is set at least 10 days from now..
so you have 10 days to fix the bug before it happens worldwide.

or am I the only one who is thinking logically here?

As you may be aware, MOST CUSTOMERS have been unable to connect to the PlayStation Network today. This problem affects the models other than the new slim PS3.

there fixxed sony's typo.

I am too scared to check my PS3.
But every cloud has a silver lining:

If this gets rid of trophies would this mean the end of H4H / Quickly made rubbish levels that flood the cool pages??

However I really really hope trophies will work once this is over. But would not be devastated if they are gone. I played before trophies were out and I still had fun.

well, the xbox and nintendo fanboys are probably having some sort of party right now, but other than that, no, no one would be happy about it. I'm not happy about it, but I'm being optimistic. I'm just gonna ride it out and see what happens, just like I always do. If it's not fixed by tonight, I have other systems gathering dust that can be played. I'd like to think everything's gonna be okay.

If anything this will cause more h4h. Trophies are still fine and so are the servers it's the PS3's that aren't working. So people may lose there trophy data and want to h4h to get the trophies back. But to be perfectly honest I think it will be ok, the amount of angry people there would be if everyones data and trophies went... well... we may break a world record for largest angry mob... ever...

Indeed. In all honesty if it's only 1 day which we can't play games then it's not the end of the world... you can look back and laugh at it. But if it's screwed the PS3 for good... well then that is pretty **** bad and not a laughing matter. I'm also being optimistic so I'm just enjoying some of the lols that have come from this day:

This is a short poem about the PSN servers being down .
Why?!?
Oh might Sony ,
Without PSN I'm lonely ,
Why give me this punishment ,
My intentions were good,
Unlike some ,

I never ,
Hurt ,
Bullied ,
Discriminated ,

I'm just a normal nerd ,
I've never been lucky,
But you're taking away ,
My Soul.

That's weird... where do you live? What type of PS3 do you have (60gb etc.)? And as for the level you published I would advise deleteing it and publishing it when this is all fixed... oh and back up your data!!!

I wonder how long this will take them to fix?

I don't know about corrupting the HDD, but it's probably not a good idea to keep playing on a bugged PS3, just to be on the safe side. As far as I know, nothing is being deleted from the HDD; the content is just being locked out by whatever encryption/password mechanism the PS3 uses because it's gone bonkers.2010-03-01 19:48:00

You know, expecting a patch within X hours is only going to drive you madder when you realize that timeframe comes and goes without a fix.

I've already accepted that things aren't going to magically fix themselves by midnight tonight (GMT). It's a lot easier than being even more frustrated in a few more hours. When the patch comes, I'll be happy but until then I'm just going to find other things to do.

um hi yay can i sqweeze in here for a bit. yay i wana put my two sence in

so from my thoughts on this. its a y2k bug(a somewat comman bug for computers)
from what i understand it is all because of 2010. the ps3 internal calender is set to a standard set up. every leep year(every second) we loose a day on the calender. but because its the first double diget leep year or something like that that lose of a day didnt happen. the ps3 is not programed to composate for that so when it whent to change its calender it did not know what to do so it reset to december 31 1999(standard setback year for computers). when this happend the sytem blocked psn or trophies or something like that because they where never programed in by this setback date(hence the no log in and trophy loses).so this is not a big deal in the slightest. it was all just a misup on sonys part. don't fret and wait. its been 2 days and people are going insane. people stay calm and let sony do there job

thats my 2 sence

Leap years are every 4 years, last was 2008 next is 2012 the problem seems to be the PS3 mistaking this year for a leap year and being confused by a day that doesn't exist.

I'm gonna take a guess and say that this won't be fixed for about a week. Sony have never released anything on a date they've initially specified. They like to keep us interested with phrases like "should be" and "we're aiming for" with no intention of actually achieving these release windows.

Plus they have their rigorous "QA process" to go through, though I think Sony have a different meaning for the acronym because it certainly doesn't stand for Quality Assurance.

If you have turned it on already and have seen the error, then the damage has been done and you could try to back up your data in case this firmware update removes it. If you haven't turned it on yet then I'd recommend leaving it off.

Leap years are every 4 years, last was 2008 next is 2012 the problem seems to be the PS3 mistaking this year for a leap year and being confused by a day that doesn't exist.

so im looking on the interwebs and find that they suspect unathorized acsess to sony files. this boosts mine and rabbits therys because if someone got into sonys files than they can screw around with some things including the ps3 calender setup. in the options menue of the ps3 theres an option to set the date by internet. im prity sure the ps3 dose this automaticly so if someone screwed with it and set it to may1 2012(next leap year where the lost day will not happen)than it might of caused the ps3 to reset as said in my earlyer post.

True, but also there has never been an incident in all of gamings history where the majority of a certain system (in this case fatty ps3's) stop working worldwide at the same time. I'm fairly confident there will be a fix by tomorrow. Or at least some confirmation that we're all screwed for good and it truly is the apocalyPS3 xD

On a side note, I don't have my PS3 in uni so I just told my bro not to turn it on All is safe. For now.

I've already formatted my PS3's hard drive thinking it had been corrupted by the power cuts i kept having.

I kind of hope that my trophies don't make a return. I'd rather have a completly fresh start instead of no game saves and a load of collected trophies to remind me of what once was.

I completely agree. That would be a complete outrage. I'd lead a riot myself.

On a side note, I don't have my PS3 in uni so I just told my bro not to turn it on All is safe. For now.

I've been hearing rumors fly (and I've been checking through this thread for a confirmation), that Sony might just say, "Your old ps3s are screwed, send them in and we'll replace it with a slim one." I doubt this would happen, and the only way I'd stand to do this is if they decide to send me a ps2 (since I have one of the fat ps3s that can play ps2 games, and use it for that purpose enough to have made it worth it), and $200. And find a way to move my ps2 saves from my ps3 HDD to a rather large ps2 memory card.

I bought it because it was supposed to be top of the line, without half the problems that the 360 has. And don't get my started on my property's value depreciating. That's crap. Sony is a corporate empire - this should be something that was thought of and taken care of before release. This ApocalyPS3 is just the sort of thing to get Microsoft into thinking they can cut further corners with their consoles. What I don't want, as a consumer. -sigh-

Regardless, imma give you a tl;dr version:

Lost saves are bad.
Possibility of having to get console exchanged, which for me to do would involve quite a bit of incentive.
Gives Microsoft an ego boost. Also bad.

And let's not forget that data corruption is not a for sure thing. I turned on my PS3 last night on two separate occasions to be greeted by the error and can confirm that my trophy data is intact as far as I can tell.

This is on a launch 60GB model so should be as problematic as any other machine.

Data corruption might only occur if trophies were obtained in game post-error or might be related to the launching of specific titles. I only booted up LBP and WipeoutHD - they appear to be safe, but don't take my word for it. Leave the system off to be on the safe side.

Better be careful there, jack. We don't know what will happen to save/game data that's been saved under "bugged" PS3s when the problem gets fixed. It's probable that nothing bad will happen and it's only PSN-related data that's being affected (trophies, DLC), but it's better to be safe than sorry.

Also, how many people don't set their forum settings to display 40 posts per page? You guys are crazy.
I only see 9 pages.

I wouldn't mind it actually. That way I could sneakily exchange my YLOD fatty PS3. ^.^

Though a recall would probably hurt Sony quite a bit considering that the vast majority of all PS3 is a fatty.

That or CD for those that don't have network connectivity.

As I recall it doesn't make me sign into PSN to update system software (I don't have auto-sign-in switched on), so network update should still be possible

Yeah, I woke up this morning to a big yellow note taped to the PS3 warning me *NOT TO USE IT* until this issue was resolved.

At least I'll get to see the missus finish her play-through of Heavy Rain instead of her finishing last night while I was asleep ... but ****, I wanted to be working on my project right now.

*sigh* Oh well, I guess I have stellar data to poor through.

Look's like they're well on their way to fixing the problem!

http://www.gamespot.com/news/6252585.html?tag=latestheadlines;title;1

According to that Sony in that article the issue should be resolved within the next 24 hours, and that article was posted 7 hours ago. Sony also advises not to use your ps3 at all until the patch is released or it "may result in errors in some functionality, such as recording obtained trophies, and not being able to restore certain data."

Hopefully they resolve it within their estimated time frame.

This has happened to me also, it actually crashed the playstation.
Its funny now I think of it because the clock is stuck on what time it crashed, that was 12:00Am… the start of the day.

What Ive noticed is…

It wont allow me to sign into the Playstation Network
The Clock stays at the same time
I am able to play LBP, but I cannot use any DLC
When you play a game with trophies, it’ll clear that games trophies

Plus some games wont work at all because it will say something about trophies and automatically quit the game. I have only tried it with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2… I don’t really wonna clear all my trophies, Ive already lost LBP and CoD lol.

I have a PAL release model Playstation 3

Hopefully it’ll get sorted out for every one sooner then later.

No, it's a worldwide Playstation Network issue that seems to only be affecting the older PS3 models. I'm going to be super-upset if I end up having to buy a new PS3 after all is said and done.

The fact is that its the 1st and still nothings happened. and i'm gonna be mad if i have to buy a new PS3. the only games i can play are Uncharted 2, and some demos

Trophies Shmrophies. I don't think they make any difference if you aren't fussed about them. Some people enjoy them, so I'm happy for them to carry on having them.

that 24 hours is up in 30 mins, and some people on other forums are already saying their 60gb PS3s are working again. Safer to wait at least the 30 mins though. Some still dont work.

EDIT: Yeah basically all of 60GB users seem to be back online. When they re-synced the trophies they got back the ones lost, and the time set to april 29th 2020 but a quick internet time sync in the menu sorted that out too.

The trophy syaytem isn't what's causing this, it's an internal clock bug. Trophy loss is just a possible side effect. (Just gave about 25 people ideas for apocalyPS3 jokes. Unintentionally, of course...)

Can people confirm that it's fixed?
(Sorry, but I'm still too scared to see myself.)

I've heard it's still not working for everyone, but seems to for most people that are trying. Up to you if you want to risk it.

It's working. Just popped into my pod and it let me put on my DLC costumes. Don't have time to play, but I'm relieved that I could if I did!2010-03-02 00:02:00

Good to hear! HOWEVER, because I'm extremely paranoid I won't be logging in for a few more hours just to make sure MST folks are going okay.

Added Plus: Waiting will also prevent my mom from forcing me to watch boring movies.

All seems normal now, my theme returned together with the others and the date/time seems ok (except that is 16 minutes in the future); but it seems I can't acquire a new IP address, so I cannot log in the PSN, it is death slow...
Maybe it is due to the large amount of people that are getting back their trophies, I better try tomorrow or later...
Phew!
What a day!
'night to all.
