Next Jackofcourse Project: To kill you all...many times! Testers: New Version Up.

Archive: 93 posts

So yeah, I've been wanting to do a classic challenging platformer for a long time, and the little race section in Industrial Assistance 2 gave me a bit of a taste for it.

So that's my plan!

I've done about 20% of it now. It's very different to anything else I've done so I'm having some good fun with it! It's a lot of fun thinking something up and not having to tone it down so everyone can do it

I'm excited. Remember back to when you said you'd pretty much reached your peak as a creator and weren't really planning on branching out? That made me sad. This makes me happy.

I'm enjoying creating at the minute. That hasn't been the case properly for a long time. (Probably since like Industrial Assistance 1!!)

Being inspired and actually enthusiastic about something really helps!

haha I meant when it was published! You all shall see then

It's going quite well. I've slowed down a bit because I'm still looking for some kind of visual decoration that I'm happy with. Think I may have found something...so I'm going back through the level and adding all that now

I must say, A Very good style/ Nice new Puzzles - (As you probably saw) I had a struggle with the Narrow areas in those...errr...'Flippers', & The Timed Platforms were a bit of a challenge!
also, Liking the Setting - It seemed to me that we (Me) were on a Spaceship? A BIG Difference from your usual

Can't wait to see what else you put in there!

Awesome. Thanks everyone

Well I'm going to have a bit more of a play around tonight and stick a few other sections in it and then I'll pass some keys out

The gameplay so far is pretty much how I want. Visuals wise, that's all a bit in flux and I keep changing it around quite a bit. There's also a few things visually that I will be adding all at once at the end! So yeah, visually it is likely to change before it's properly published

If anyone else fancies testing just let me know!

well you can copy a key room from comphermc and then put the key in that level and publish, then give the tester the code so they can access the key room! And take the key!

Thanks to everyone who's tested so far and told me what they think.

As I mentioned the visuals weren't really finalised and after messing around a lot today I've found a look that I'm far happier with Once I've got through updating the whole level (which will be so tedious ) I will put the newer version online.

This is awesome and simply fun. Everything's unique but not done over the top. The visuals were a little questionable to me, but the gameplay was top notch. It wasn't easy! Best use of paint gun I've seen anyway! Great stuff!2010-03-21 21:25:00

I actually expect the last few sections to crank up the difficulty as so far you have done an awesome job of gradually making it more challenging as it goes along. With a few sections just adding plasma ball obstacles to them and then adding all the gameplay pieces together in one section is something you have done really well. Can't wait to see the final sections.

I Died 50 times in 4 player. 3 times on my own... So it can be harder, but I knew what I was doing the second time. First time you, play youre gonna have to learn how it works.

Gradually getting harder is definitely my plan. The last section you've all seen seems to have caught quite a lot of you out though! It's not that hard with a bit of practice...if I am to make it so it carries on getting harder than that...you better all be up for the challenge 2010-03-21 21:52:00

Excellent work on this level. The only thing I didn't like was the visuals. I understand you were going for platforming (and passed with flying colours!) but the visuals felt a bit out of it for me.

Maybe it's personal preference, but I'm telling it how it is. Also, I LOVED how you transitioned into each section; simple yet brilliant! And the final section was awesome

Thanks a lot The platforming was the main thing I was after with this one and that seems to be going down well so all is good

The visuals were a bit hit and miss. Some people really liked them, others didn't. I'm in the process of changing them all now anyway so the new version should be much much better. Although it is a nightmare going through the whole level doing it!

More keys will be sent out tonight when I get home from a horribly day sat in the library working!

I've made the most awesomely bestest cool secret area you will ever see. It's not really a secret, it's can clearly be seen...but it takes some Ninja skills to get to it. It's basically a devilsh bit of gameplay that would have just been too harsh to put in the actual required gameplay, but I really love it so I put it in for the high scorey goodness!

I had a couple of points, forgot what most of them were.

What I do remember is that the guy who firse downwards and the platform rises to protect you from the plasma - he needs a time indication (preferably a ticker like the other platforms). More tomorrow, is bedtime now.

I also worked out a fun way to make it extreme, by not allowing the players to shoot from the sides or the bottom of the platforms - you have to commit to landing on the platform before taking your shot. You know you want to make that happen

Thanks Yeah there deifnitely needs to be a ticker on that one, I didn't realise there wasn't to be honest.

About your extreme thing...Captain was the first to test it when I very first started and that's pretty much his method haha. Jump towards the platform and then just spam the paintinator at it! I preferred to take a nice clean shot at it and then jump. He defined it as the 'American and British way of doing things'

I meant to write feedback earlier when the level was fresh in my mind, but the wife came home and I got distracted. So, please forgive me for the brief feedback, I'll try and give it another go tomorrow.

Basically, I agree with most of the comments that I've seen mentioned already. The gameplay is very good. It's difficult, but I never found it to be unfair or frustrating. Checkpoint placement seemed to be just right, I never died and thought "Oh man, I have to start all the way back here?", so I appreciated that a lot. The use of the paintinator was fantastic and I loved having to time the shots. Again, difficult, but fair and very satisfying when you pull it off.

The only thing I didn't like much... the visuals. I feel bad to even say it after reading that you've already changed and tweaked them numerous times. I did appreciate the fact that you were doing something different from your usual style, but I just wasn't feeling it. Perhaps my expectation that it would be similar to the style of your other levels also played a role in my feelings toward the visuals.

I'll definitely give it another go tomorrow and see how I feel, but as of right now, the visuals are the only thing I disliked. The gameplay was very good though.

Thanks a lot MrSC! In all honesty I'm quite happy with the visuals now, they are much much better than they were. They aren't anything spectacular but then that's not what the level is about, I think they fit the theme quite well. I guess we'll find out what everyone thinks properly when it's published, but all things considered, I am pretty content with how it's turned out now

I'm not really sure what could be wrong with them?. Trying to be objective, I would honestly say that they suit the theme and are at the very least effective. You know your comment about it may be something to do with it not being 'my style', while it sounds odd, you may actually be right. Another bit of feedback I got was that maybe I should add more of 'my style' to it. Which was a bit of a 'sigh' moment to be honest. I get told my levels feel a bit samey and I should try something different, so I do, and now I should add more of ''my style' to it! I can't win! haha

Thanks a lot!

Major fail I just pressed back and it deleted everything I had wrote!

Anyway, the level is finished! This is actually the first time I've finished a level and not just wanted to get it published. I'll probably keep hold of it for a bit and just tweak little things that no one will notice but me

I also have loads of work to do and if I publish it now I'll just end up staring at this forum and in game stats all day and night and not get anything done! Will still probably be published soon though!
