Lost Ages III

Archive: 23 posts

Just started work on the third installment the other day.
I have a key room up for anyone interested in checking it out.
The code is 737373.
Please keep in mind this is only the beginning of construction, so it just ends abruptly and there are still some apparent issues.
Feedback and concerns appreciated.

Ive been waiting to hear this for a long time! Glad to hear your carrying on with the series. Lost Ages 1 & 2 are two of my favourite levels ever, i just love the the quiet and derelict feel to the level. Also, the way you work the still camera angles is pretty amazing

I'll definatley give it a try for you.

EDIT: I got the key but the level didnt open up

uh oh...
okay i'll check into it when i get home.
You did use 737373 and not 757575, right?
that one just gives a key to Mega City for people who just happen to wander in.

Yeah i used 737373, i got the key out of the second door along. It did the thing where it takes you to the level the key is for then nothing happened. I had the same thing happen when i got the key for jackofcourse's Industrial Assistance 2. Maybe its just me doing something wrong 2010-02-27 21:05:00

kipmonlin said he has issues trying to access levels with keys. maybe its a bug or something? Like i said i will check into it when i get home (10 pm-ish) to see if it is something on my end.
Anybody else tried to get in?

I just got in... starting the level now.

Edit: wow, you work fast. This is looking ever better than the first two. I love the forced, wide angle cameras. A few spots need tweaks yet, but dang it's looking good.

I finally got in today. I had to get the key with somebody else for it to work, no idea why tho

Its looking like another great level in the making! Glad you've kept the still wide camera angles too

On the part at the beginning, when one of us died the screen went black and the second person had to drop down and die so we were able to carry on playing. It got a bit annoying after a couple of times but im guessing its made as a 1 player level like the other two so it shouldnt matter if your on your own.

Looking forward to the final product though, keep it up

got a bit of creators block/ FFXIII, but a little bit of progress is still trickling in.
thanks anyone who's been checking in.

ok its actually getting close, but now i'm having thermo issues and need to find some subtle things to remove without changing too much.

As i was working on the final legs of this level a thought occurred to me.
how opposed would you guys be to me using components of the scrapped Mega City series
(as awful as it was)
to create Lost Ages IV?
It would basically an abandoned futuristic city
(without enemies or bosses)
most likely nestled in a jungle setting so i can use the vera bee stickers ive been dying to.
Of course i woulldnt just throw a bunch of MC segments together and say thats it.
Fail + Fail =/= Win, after all.
so what do you guys think? or would you prefer to see a sample before passing judgment?

well for me personally (and i consider myself the biggest LA fan) i think a futuristic environment would be an interesting and healthy departure from what you've done so far. i played a bunch of the mega city levels (some were actually a challenge which isnt usually the case for me these days in LBP cus) and i liked the color and material choice . i actually haven't seen alot of peeps use the vera bee stickers so that should be cool. you could throw out a sample just to get some thoughts but i wouldnt say u need our permission lol. im sure whatever you choose will be top notch. hit me up if u want any opinions2010-03-17 16:58:00

Okay so my revisions weren't so subtle after all.
I have rebuilt from the ground up.
There are now no completely encased cave areas, its more open.
And more thermo friendly.
Also I have constructed an 18 minute daytime cycle thing,
but if anyone knows a better way to do this
namely one that might be a little longer (24 minutes or so)
I would surely love to see it.
I havent posted V2 yet, prolly will tonight.

I think anything with your style of hard camera angles and planeshifting platforming would be fun no matter where/when it's located. Let me know when V2 is out.

Nice. I'll be looknig out for V2. Hopefully the key works for me this time too

And i totally agree with what comphermc says above me. I love the still cameras you use, and the planeshifting is very well worked

its not so much a cave anymore. more like an island suspended on spires like a table. of course i couldve just made a bunch of stuff floating in air, but a big part of my design philosophy for the LA levels is that everything is supported (or seems to be) by an actual foundation of some sort. In this instance, the island is being held up by a series of natural stone and man made "pillars", which the player will navigate around as they descend.

The overhaul is also allowing me to pull back a feature from LA1. After descending to the base of the "island" the paths to two sun spheres are opened.
Each path returns to start and they can be taken in either order. This was my original plan, but i screwed up V1 by going a little crazy and eating up my thermo too fast.

Do you guys think 18 minutes is long enough for a day/night cycle?

ok yea i like spyres lol. and i like the main HUB idea from LA1, i think wat i liked most from LA2 was just the overall visuals and how the level got progressively harder with the different tasks in the beginning and then to epic hard platforming. very few levels give me a run for my money in terms of pushing my platforming skills. but yea, i think an 18 minute day/night circle works. i can bet most people wont even notice, ill pay attention though. 18 minute cycles means ur expecting ur level to take long enuff for several cycles to occur anyway so that should be fine. making ur cycle longer just means less cycles over the course of a playthrough. keep the updates comin, i look back here often2010-03-20 20:33:00

Pace will be a little different from LA2 due to multipathing.
Should be something like:

medium diff platforming
Puzzling
hard platforming
puzzling
hard platforming
WIN

Starting on the two other islands today.

i think its finished!
after some frustrating reworks and tinkering
and taking a bit of time away playing bf:bc2
it might actually be done

I would really appreciate it if some of you guys could test it out and let me know your opinions.
thanks.
