70mb RAM upgrade

I remember reading some interview a while back that said giving us more thermo really wasn't possible. I don't know tech stuff, but with this ram upgrade, could it now be possible for MM to release an update that will give us more thermo? Anyone know?

That would certainly be great. Even if it's just an extra notch of thermo, there's a lot that could be done with just that. 2010-02-24 14:10:00

So it's not actually a RAM upgrade, but a reduction in OS requirements?

Although, baring in mind recent changes in thermo calculations have been observed, maybe MM are already using this additional resource?

Possible, but this is an interesting article nonetheless. Not something I would have expected at this stage...2010-02-24 14:47:00

It's to be expected that Sony optimise its software. It's cool that it unlock a bit a juice for devs because the way the memory is fragmented in the PS3 hardware it's a bit complicated to work with. And more often than not, if you devellop your game on PC or for 360, you end up with memory problems porting to the PS3. So yeah, every bit of RAM they free up will be extremely useful actually.
Also, Media Molecule definetely is optimising the game. Leerdammer reduced the memory emitters are taking by around 50%. The new beta also seems to test some further and deeper improvements to their engine so yeah, we all benefit.

Ah, so there have been changes in the thermo. It'd be nice to get some concrete info from MM on the subject though. I never thought we would receive a thermo upgrade so this is really surprising news to me. I always thought more ram would require a hardware upgrade. I never knew there was "hidden" ram that could be unlocked. Best unlockable ever! :hero: There's a new beta too? RangerZero, can you tell us what it is or are you not allowed to?2010-02-25 00:35:00

That memory was previously used by the OS but they managed to cut it, so it's now available to games.

I think that the thermo will remain more or less what it is.
I never thought that the thermo had limits due to RAM reasons, but to maintain the level in let's say 10 MB, so that you don't need ages to load it.

If you look at exported levels you see that they are around 1mb max. Of course it's a virtual limit not related to ram but still, having more ram can lead to nice optimisations, less slowdown, less glitches if they were memory dependant , etc.
Also, Media Molecule DOES optimise their game anyways because they already did in the past and also with Leerdammer. Anyhow, like I said, we all win this.

I can imagine that more RAM means more room to load bitmaps and bump maps for materials, so for example the collected object thermo might be raised.

Also, programming often means balancing between two resources. For example, you can save RAM by compressing your data, but at a cost of CPU cycles. Vice versa, you can save CPU by precalculating stuff and storing it in RAM.
