Red flashing light of eventual death... and now YLOD

Archive: 90 posts

Well, I got it. and I think it's this thing.

http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=ps3&thread.id=3884589

Fan appears to be working and it wasn't hot at all the 5x it shut itself off. I've managed to pull some of my data down to a stick but am going to try and get my current stuff before it dies. I'm going to call Sony tomorrow but since it's 2.5 years old I'm fully expecting a good luck and a pat on the head... if I'm lucky.

Soooooo - my question is this - Should I pay the geek squad at Best Buy to migrate my info from old drive to new drive and is that even possible with a red flashy ps3 that shuts down every three minutes even though I have a personal fan on high blowing the heck out of the back of it OR is all lost - should I grab what I can and deauthorize it while I can?

EDIT: ok - manged to keep it running for about 40 minutes and was able to pull off all my backups for LBP and my current level stuff too *sigh of relief* This time she was a little warm but I shut it down manually and it didn't power off by itself. (Got the LBP disk out too jic)

So after 5x shutting itself off it stayed on.... why? Is this intermittent and going to get worse? Should I just go get a new one?

EDIT: RIP 80GB - YLOD 2/25/10 @10:01pm mid data transfer.

Sorry Morgana.. already posted my thoughts on your visitors page last night during the tragedy. However.. since you did have a bit of success I will update my thoughts as well.

Glad it ran for a bit to grab the stuff off, but I still think there is a thermo sensor being flipped in the cpu causing the issue. Possibly because the fan rpms are seemingly so far down causing the heat buildup. Though both are guesses... but I am a pretty good guesser at times!

I would still call Sony and Best Buy and based upon what all the options they tell you, make a decision. At least it would be a more informed decision knowing any and all options. If it were me, I might feel more comfy with a newer one, but I hate that it is even smaller. Wish they were more like PC's so you could work on them a bit and swap out components with beefier aftermarket ones.

If you do call all the above, feel free to share that info here or with me and I would be more than happy to help you make a choice.

Best of luck!! (first thing on my list is a new set of backups for both our PS3's!)

I am so sorry Morgana. We totally jinxed it last night when we were talking about ps3s dying!!!!!!

Anyway, I have to add this about best buy: You have to be really careful with them. I have a friend who works for their geek squad and they take pride in charging people an arm and a leg for services that don't really cost that much. They might genuinely be able to fix it for you, but it's something to consider.

jww's right, though. I would most definitely call sony or try to get a new one ASAP.

the reason it did not overheat this time might be becasue your ps3 was not doing so much, for example... my laptop can work fine but if you put in sims 3 it will overheat and shut down, make sure your ps3s vents are not blocked.2010-02-24 17:12:00

That hardly seems nice I wouldn't sell it to some poor unsuspecting person. Still weighing my options. Great advice so far guys and thanks for the support. I thought I'd be more heartbroken over this but I'm actually pretty calm. Having my backups really helps although I'm bummed I can't get my RB2 stuff to backup.... I had gold stars

Good thoughts! Yeah.. you might also take a vacuum to it to insure as much dust and other airborne goodies are not causing it to be blocked or work harder than normal. On my pc, I set a reminder to clean all filters and such once a month.

cloning the hard drive will let you keep your rockband stuff... if you can wait for a hard drive to ship from newegg. When we swapped out my friend patrick's hard drive, that's what we did. That way he didn't have to redownload any of his dlc, either. One thing to keep in mind, though, is that you can't clone the crown for some reason. So you will have to redownload that. But I already told you that last night.

Surely what you can do is change the filter on the fan, and replace it with a lint free one, see if it works any better after that. If it doesn't well send it to RTM 2010-02-24 17:35:00

It's worth noting that a third-party company has developed an external cooling fan for the PS3 a while ago - way back in the console's launch days. It may be time to order one if your console's days are numbered by its inability to handle heat.2010-02-24 19:00:00

I had an external fan on it too. One that attaches to the back of the system. Guess that wasn't enough.

EDIT: ok just got off the phone with Sony - nice customer service rep Andy gave me my options:

1. Fill out the online service form, wait 5-10 days for the prepaid box to send it to Sony, Wait 3 weeks for it to be fixed and returned all for the low low price of $178! Ok - couple of problems with this, 3 weeks plus w/o my station... not good for Morgana's mental health and really not good for Spotlight work. Also $178 is a bit steep don't ya think? But whatever - this is not going to happen.

2. I emailed a guy from craigs list about doing a $50 repair and haven't heard back from him yet. I think I may just do this whether I do option 3 or not, just for the backward compatibility and some game data that can't transfer. I'd have two systems then which seems silly but not THAT silly.

3. Go to Best Buy and buy a brand spanking new Slim tonight, also will have to buy a hub to expand the usb slots to 4 since it only has 2 built in and I loose backward compatibility. I'd spend the next two nights transferring data. But I'd be up and running tonight if I wanted to be. This, I admit, sounds like the best deal to me. Oh sure I'm gonna fork out a ton of cash but I can choose time or money and I've got a little extra laying around so I'm thinking this is the plan.

Anyone want to talk me into one of these, a combination of them or a completely different course of action?

I think I would go for #3

Maybe #2 if you hear back and it is a quick fix, OR possibly both 2 and 3. Dad and your brother might like playing RB while you're gadding about.

Two thoughts if you do go with #3.

a. I would still consider #2 as well so you have a 2nd for others in the house and still have the old one around to attempt to remove anything else off you might not have gotten.

b. Without doing #2 as well that might be a bit limited, but like I suggest in parking it outside or running a vent to it from outside, you might get it to run for another 40 minutes to an hour, even longer to be able to pull old stuff off like pics and such that possibly might not yet have.

Good luck!! ..and hope this helps!

"Oh why has the light betrayed us!
Stay away from the light PS3!

I say send to Sony. Trust me, it's the best option. You get your console in 2 weeks, all data is safe, and in addition you get a new motherboard. If you want, you can go to a retail gaming store to send it for you, that's what I did. I think I'll recieve it in the end of February or in the beginning of March. So go with this option.

P.S. If you're not sure it's safe (especially with rumors of Sony sending you someone else's PS3), then just wait a bit until I get my PS3, then I'll let you know if it's worth doing it.

you can back up your data onto an external hardrive, settings / system settings / backup utility / backup
If it comes to the worst, simply plug the harddrive in and go to
settings / system settings / backup utility / restore

NOOOOOOO!!!!! I could be in the geek squad, all they need to do is read a couple of instructions and there you go, you're now ready to take the cash from any desperate customer... sorry, I had to say it...

It's not YLOD - it's the stage before YLOD - if I let it overhead I'll have a YLOD but so far so good. It's just dying slowly.

Well, the guy at Sony said if I get the new deck I can connect the two systems via ethernet cord and copy it all from one to the other... theoretically no data loss (but I'm not that naieve) but it would be faster than doing it by hand. I'd still have to re download all the DLC though.

If I do that via a HD I'd have to buy a HD wait for that to arrive do the transfer, then load it up... probably a week before I'd be up and running. I do have an unsealed 1TB external HD I bought for my laptop - Western Digital - would that work? If so I can do that tonight and load it up on a new system.

Ohhh... no kiddin... I need to look at that as a safer alternative for a full backup. Thanks!

Yea 3 weeks.... you know me jww... do YOU think I could go three weeks? lol

Yeah.. I think 3 hours is a stretch for you.

just to clarify, this is nothing to do with YLOD ?

Correct.. not sure the fancy label to the demise, but to me it sounds like overheating triggering a thermal sensor in the MB or CPU and shutting it down. Possibly just due to the fan not spinning enough.. I don't know their circuitry at all so not sure.

I don't think "cheap" is always good. You can't trust strangers to fix it for you, because what if this guy's a hacker? Maybe he'll fix it, only to steal information like credit card, data, billing, etc.. It can happen, so I wouldn't reconsider the option much.

As for sending it to Sony, like I said before, is the best choice. You only wait 2 weeks, 3 max. They know what they're doing, and they fix it so it's brand new. I'm not sure if those "replaced" PS3's rumors are true, but as soon as I get mine back (the retail gaming store I gave my PS3 to, for them to send to Sony, said that it may be ready by Saturday), I'll tell you if it's the option you should take or not.

Peace

"No big deal, I'll simply let it die slowly..." sarcastic tone

I already did this before and I didn't get everything back (example: I lost some of my LBP costumes :C ) But I have to say it works great.

I do have an unsealed 1TB external HD I bought for my laptop - Western Digital - would that work?
yup

CyberSora, I understand your point, the first option would be the thing I'd do. But Morgana said she would like to wait 2-3 weeks and she wouldn't be ready to pay so much money on a single reparation. Otherwise, I know the cheapest isn't always the best.

ok - so theoretically would connecting the decks via ethernet and copying produce the same effect as me hooking up that Western Digital HD - copying stuff to it then copying it down to the other system or is one way better/different?

If I do the HD route how do I do that?

This happend to me, I was over a year into LBP and I got YLOD, lost everything

The dlc is not that bad to redownload, it took me around 10 mins

Beleive me though, it seems worse than it actually is... as long as you get your levels backed up, you will be fine
Its quite fun having to play through the story again, brings back good memories

Oh Morgana, really sorry about that! It's so annoying!

I have problems with mine too (not the same as you) but it's very "sick", and it's not even 1year old
Mine is still under warranty till April, but as you said, waiting like 3 or 4 weeks to get it fixed or replaced is very frustrating...

And you're right, as yours is no more under warranty, it's better to buy a new one (if you find... ??)
and just don't bother yourself with repairing, sending and all that stuff.

ninja had the same problem. It's because of God of War III and Final Fantasy. People are buying up consoles like they're goin' out of style.

And fyi, my friend Patrick backed up his playstation using a plug and play usb Western Digital "My Passport" harddrive and it worked just fine.

OOooo Fond du Lac!? LOL!! I've had to stay there at times when I am late with my hotel reservations when shooting at Road America. I hate that road WI-23 to the track (which is on 67) and it's longer on that if I stay there vs Sheboygen. Huge concrete sections that have shifted and the joints between causing these horribly jarring bumps. Sorta like BUMP {silence} BUMP {silence} BUMP {silence} The worst of it being from 67 to Fond du Lac

I am thinking you are heading up 41 though.. that shouldn't be so bad at all! Hope they still have it and will hold it for you!

Funny if you do find it there. Another funny story about Fond Du Lac... that was the only place April ever found Oat Chex. At least I think it was Oat Chex.. Possibly some of the last boxes in the country we took home with us that year!

Good luck!

Well Wisconsin had many French fur traders and trappers around here so we have their legacy. We have stuff like Marquette University and a bunch of cities named in French. Google Wisconsin cities and you'll basically see a bunch of Algonquin Native American names, French and German names and some regular old boring American ones too.

Well, It's ordered, payed for and supposedly waiting for me in Fon du Lac... I'm going after work to pick it up. Two hours round trip... not so bad

LOL... for some reason, I started remembering a scene in Wayne's World reading that...

Congrats on finding one somewhat close at least! I was gonna head down the street and see if I could find any, but meeting you halfway would be worse since that would be somewhere on the other side of Chicago for you!

I was fully prepared to road trip for this one. lol - Between you, my family in Michigan and Vortex I think I had most of the midwest covered. lol

Yep - I love that scene with Alice Cooper from Wayne's World. "The Good Land" indeed

All this talk about location got me looking where everyone lives. There's a lot of other Midwesterners on here!

Also, I can vouch for Sony. We sent them ours and got it back with all my data within 3 weeks. And I haven't had any problems with it since.

... Fond du Lac ... Sheboygen ... Wisconsin has some silly sounding town names (but I guess, so does Minnesota - or probably any state for that matter). Anyway... I have a friend/co-worker who lives in Sheboygan. I just like saying it out loud... "Sheboygan". Tee hee... Whoa - that reminds me... I owe that dude money. Better get a check off to... wait for it... Sheboygan!

After a 3 hour round trip I'm home and the new arrival is being updated with system 3.15 as we speak. Going to try that data transfer and see how that goes... I'm almost back - horray!

@ Vortex - Sheboygan is fun to say.... "SHE-BOY-GAN" if you say it with a Wisconsin accent... I'll have to hear it with a Minnesotta one online one of these days

Huzzah! She's nearly back. Lucky you got the warning of Doom, and not the Doom itself.

Now, how long will it take your old PS3 to bring water to a boil?

I say send the old one back to Sony anyway... Yeah it's kind of expensive, but I'd pay that to hang on to BC and 4 ports. Maybe that's just me though. 2010-02-26 03:26:00

I kinda like that idea in way.. a total refurb gives you a backup and an extra for the rest of the family.

The answer to this would be no if anyone else wonders - I've got avi connectors on now.

@ Vortex - transfer is through ethernet/network cable. But you have to have both systems on a tv you can change settings apparently.... ok - Now I think I can do this.

Well - it was a good plan.....

I regret to announce that as of 10:01pm my 80GB has succumbed to YLOD before I could get a data transfer done. She started twice, shut down and then died. Guess I'll have to start over on some stuff or wait for it to get repaired then transfer... in the meantime I'm up and running on the new system. *sigh* talk about ups and downs.

What?? It now has a yellow light? Gheeeesh.. Horrible luck there.

I guess for now you could copy your profile and then decide how you want to proceed later.

Yep she shut down and I tried to restart and the yellow light is there in all it's mocking glory.... I have the important stuff backed up and she did stay on long enough to deautorize it so there's a silver lining there. Time to start over 2010-02-26 04:10:00

Atleast you were lucky enough to get an advanced warning most of us YLOD victims just have the system die suddenly.

I hate the Yellow light! She's not even enough brave to appear at least, a second.. dang you little shy yellow light!

Did Sony told you why it died? It's an overheat problem so it's normal that your system died when you started it.. :C

Not her new PS3, she went to buy a new one.
It's her old one that has the YLOD.

Yay, my PS3 arrived! As promised, I shall give you my report on said option (hope it isn't to late, but I was busy). Here it goes:

I unwrap my PS3. "Ooh, shiny! Wait, this isn't mine. I know my PS3 for years, and I know that this is another console!" Checks system number using document I recieved from Sony. "NOOO, THEY TOOK MY OTHER ONE!" Reads document. "It claims that my memory is in the new system. Oh, that's actually great!" Sets new system on my usual PS3's spot. Plugs in cords, and turns switch on. Goes through powering on process. Enter, enter, enter... done.

Now I wait click on PSN registration. "Darn, a system update." Downloads update. Done. Now heads on to re-entering my old account. Enter, enter, enter... done. I'm back online, and my Trophies are still here! But still, I'm back on LBP! I missed you all!

Finally, I head over to my saved data... and... "MOTHERFU-! IT DELETED ALL MY DATA! ALL MY GAMES, DLC, EVERYTHING, GONE! "

So yes, the tragic end to my data. Overall review is:

Pros: New system, 3 month warranty, and you feel like you're starting fresh.
Cons: That's the thing, you literally start fresh! My games are gone, including my data!
Suggestions: DON'T SEND IT TO SONY! By Gods name, do not send it to Sony! If there is any other way to fix it without your memory being erased, then do it. Seriously, Sony WILL give you someone else's PS3 and they WILL erase your memory. AND, I lost about $250 dollars in the end. I could have bought another PS3 like that! DON'T SEND IT TO SONY!
Comments: At least they got my Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 out of the system. Sadly, I have to go through Campaign Mode all over again. So ya, Sony just lost 25% of my respect towards them.

Peace

Didn't you saved and backed up your datas before sending it to Sony?? on an external or USB drive?

$250 dollars? of downalodable content?
If so, it's not lost, you can download everything again on the store without paying (check you downloads list)

When you get YLOD, it is impossible to get your data back from the PS3. It turns on for like 2 seconds, the shuts down. In other words, I couldn't turn on my PS3. So I lost my memory and the chance to save my data.

And you're charged $150 dollars for repair of your PS3. If Sony can't fix your PS3, they'll remove the hard-drive and put it in another PS3, adding about $50 to your tab. So with tax and shipping, I was charged $215. Finally, the new PS3 formatted my hard-drive, removing my data. So all DLC and games I bought were lost, which in total downloads amount is about $25. So add that up, and I get around $243 on my bill, a near $250. So unless I can get my DLC back (I heard that some of your purchases are lost forever), I'm currently ripped off $250 from my wallet.

Cybersora - you will be able to download all of your DLC again. It might take a while, but like daj said, check your download list and then download them again.
Thats what mrv had to do with all our DLC, when our PS3 got the YLOD.

Still, you have to admit that Sony took away a large amount of my money, which is around $215-$218, and that's after I get my DLC and other content back.2010-02-28 23:07:00
