Lights and Lighting Control

Archive: 48 posts

As many of you know, LBP has had many levels that use the lighting to their advantage. I love the lighting affercs, because it gives your level that "razzle-dazzle" feeling. Don't know what I meant? Well here's an example:

Say you made a lavel...err... in an underground cave that is barely lit. Oh, and you have to use a portable lamp. So which scenario is better?

(a) A brightly lit cave with a lamp with no light alluminating from it.
(b) An actual cave that you need a lamp with light to see through it.

I say (b), of course. Seriously, lights and lighting is needed. How is will the place feel more realistic? I can tell it will be difficult to make, but I feel that with LBP, anything is possible. So I wish Cambridge will follow LBP's footsteps and make lights and lightings available for LBP PSP.

Peace

Same here. I am unfortunately deprived of the PS3 version because I don't have the cash for it, so I have to live through the lack of lighting effects, multiplayer, and many crashes I seem to get at random intervals. Until all that (Except multiplayer, which I would like, but don't need.) is fixed, my sole priority is to get a PS3 along with LBP. Its a shame they couldn't stuff more into the game.2010-02-24 02:37:00

Couldn't they do sorta fake lighting? You know like how there's a light object and on it's a transparent 3D 'beam' and it just changes the brightness of the parts of objects within it's beam? Global lighting wouldn't be too hard, all it's doing is increasing the brightness/dullness of the whole level.2010-02-24 16:40:00

Oh, yes, I'd love that. Though I've got a solution of sorts. Make a level where black smoke covers the front flat. Then, have a piston controlled clear glass circle follow them. I'm planning something like this for the second Lava Flows level.2010-02-25 00:04:00

We know global lighting effects are possible, at least subtle ones anyway. When you load up different backgrounds you can see the color palette change. It would be great to have more control over that.2010-02-25 23:48:00

I know, thank the creator curators for the wedding background, because that's the closest I'm gonna get to having a mildly-darkened volcano.

You mean "Crusadors". And nice tip about the total drakness thing, but I think I'll like the lighting control better.

I'm with you on that one. My psp has constant crashes so I'm planning to get a ps3 if I earn the money.

Lighting control of some sorts would be great, or maybe an option to go black and white for a pulpy noir look.

Is there any other game on psp that pushes the hardware like lbp? Because the amount of crashes with this game is nerve racking sometimes.

I could not agree more, I am currently trying to make a level (and it's been going good so far), but I am irritated over the lighting and the background. The lighting is just what I want, the perfect atmospehere for the level, but the background does not fit in the level. A lighting option is what I crave most for on LBP.
The backgrounds, as Taffey said, is the only way to change the lighting of the level to an extent.

True, I'd love lighting more than anything at the moment. In the level I'm making you start off in a hot sunny area, then head into a dark cave. How am I meant to show a change in lighting?2010-03-02 16:25:00

I think there must be a VERY good reason for MM not to include lights. Maybe it just pushes it's hardware way too much with lights. I don't know for sure though.2010-03-03 13:13:00

Exactly. As I recall, they made the update Strawberry Cheesecake, and IT'S A LIE! I have a feeling that Mm will personaly see to it that Cambridge adds lights.

It's really not an idea, more like an update. I'm just curious to why LBP PS3 can have it but not LBP PSP.2010-03-24 01:43:00

Because, like many people have said, the option to change lighting to finest points. And changing the hues, the tints, and the brightness. It's all too much for our poor old PSP.2010-03-24 02:03:00

First off, the PSP isn't poor. The thing costed me 250 motherbleeping dollars when it came out. Second, I think it can do it, it's just Cambridge didn't do it for a reason.2010-03-24 02:20:00

How do you know it can't do it? A lot of people have had problems with the shutoff bug and it's all because the PSP is being pushed too hard.2010-03-24 02:24:00

I don't know, but all I'm saying is that PSP is probably capable of doing it one way or another. They were going to do the camera thing, but removed it later on. So like I said, it is possible.2010-03-24 02:29:00

@ silver39... ummm Silent Hill SHattered Memories for psp... realtime flashlight on EVERYTHING. 100% self shadowing objects, and no slow down. LBP isnt as graphics intensive either. Cambridge is just lazier than Konami.2010-03-24 02:49:00

Um, poorjack. Last I checked Shattered Memories DIDN'T have an in-depth level creation system, with corner editing and tools like switches, bolts, and pistons.2010-03-25 00:26:00

Well, like Fastbro said, it would be good to have day and night on.

But I would at least like a lightbulb or something. I mean, what's so hard about making a lightbulb?

EDIT: A lightbulb in LBP! :kz:

lol true a lightbuld isn't that hard to do. or maybe a light switch object that has a option when u put it on a object to make the level dim, dark, light,or lighter.2010-03-25 03:35:00

I mean, what's so hard about making a lightbulb? As long as you have some tungsten 74, a supply of inert gas, an airtight glass vessel, and a power supply from an arc welder it's apparently pretty easy.

Though it is true that LBP does have some dynamic physics at work, the PSP should at least be able to handle some simple lighting. Ray-tracing? Now that's another story my friend. But that's not what I'd expect if I wanted lighting.

Honestly, simple lighting isn't graphically intense at all. Early 3D games use them, and they barely have enough processing power to support an object with 200+ polygons.

I agree with FastBro, a Day and Night setting would be awesome. Or even a mid-afternoon kind of thing. You guys know what I'm talking about right?...right? And, A light bulb would be nice, I don't get why it's that hard. I don't even think it's that hard to make some lighting effects on a PSP. I'm no game designer or programmer, but I've seen games on the PSP that have similar graphics quality and capabilities of LBP that have simple lighting effects.2010-03-26 09:37:00

Lol, I edited my post because of wrong puncuations. I hate wrong punctuations.

Lol, punctuation hater!

Anyways, back to the suggestion. It's not about games having lighting, it's about games controlling lightings and creating other light effects that other users can access with not much loading time. I'm saying that Cambridge maybe had a problem with this light feature, but it's not comforting to see them give up on it. That's why I'm saying they should at least look in to it.

If we get lightbulbs, they ***** better be able to flicker. I would be so mad otherwise. But mostly what I want is that day and night setting, a global light filter.2010-03-26 14:48:00

I think that the Global Settings page would be Awesome if it was added! Even if it was only night-day effects:
1. Morning
2. Day
3. Evening
4. Night
When you open the pop-it and go to the Global settings, backgrounds would be in that page. When you select a background, An option pops-up. It asks what time of day you want the background to be at(1-4 from above).

I just thought of this didn't Zelda on the N64 have have global lighting? I am pretty sure it did!
Then again some of the videos that have hacked psp's that try to run N64 games it fails... Its funny you people who hack your PSP's are a shame!
If you hack your PSP to play homebrew then I don't care about you, but the online is what you are missing out on you people can't even get online...
How did I get into talking about hacking PSP's? Oh well but anyways this would be a great feature to add PLEASE DO SO!

If you have no wireless internet access to begin with, you lose out on nothing, and gain a lot.
