I'm new to LBP and forum - Creating labyrinth survival challenge

Archive: 4 posts

Hello,

I'm new to LBP as of this February and have already gotten involved with level creation. My PSN ID is Ozmodiar53 and I would like feedback on my "first" real level called Shock Therapy.

The real note I wanted to mention was an idea I had for a survival challenge level. I haven't began creating it yet, but have been drawing up the idea. I want to create a labyrinth that is held within a spinning circular structure. The circle will spin every so often and cause the player to be randomly dropped into a different area of the labyrinth. There will be exits all around the labyrinth, so the main goal is to stay inside the circle as long as possible collecting points. I am thinking of making the insides of the labrynth move as well by incorporating wobble bolts on the material.

Thanks for the help! I'll be reading up on the forum and see what I can learn/help out on!

This sounds like a pretty complicated idea you've got there. When you say circular structure, do you mean one big spinning circle or lots of smaller ones that pass Sackboy between them? If it is the latter, you'll want to make sure that the joins between will not squash the player, and that the edges are clearly visible. It might be a good idea to give the player a jetpack if you're using the multiple circles idea - otherwise the player can go down but finds it hard to get back up again.

Maybe add extra things in some places like grab handles or flaming obstacles to keep the player on their toes. And as it's a survival challenge, you'll need to keep the points coming - in a survival challenge like this it means a lot of emitters. Some logic could also be used to speed up the challenge/increase number of deadly obstacles as the game progresses. All in all, a really cool concept.

Hey thanks for the suggestions! I started building my level last night. So far I have 4 paths that each rotate 180 degrees with a wobble bolt every 7 seconds. This makes the effect that the path is moving. These paths are on the first layer. The second layer is also one layer thick (looks as if its hovering in the middle of the level because of use of dark matter attached to a wooden piece) and is stationary. The third layer has rotating wheels that will help players get back up if they fall through the labyrinthe (Also the same - one layer thick and appears to be hovering). I have a floor that is 3 layers thick that is attached to pistons that open and close so that players may fall out. I am still thinking of adding more "labyrinth" style pieces that move on the first layer. The whole level has been squared off so that I can copy and paste the whole thing... multiplying the dimensions of the level. When all is said and done, I am going to encapsulate the whole level within a circular structure. During the entire level I am going to have the circle slowly rotate to cause an effect of a rotating labyrinth level.. This may or may not get faster as time goes on depending how it works. I was thinking of changing this game from a survival game to a racing game. I am thinking about creating some sort of "path" through the labyrinth that the player has to follow while collecting points. The faster the player can get out of the labyrinth the more points they will receive. Also going to want to make sure to get as much points as possible along the way.2010-02-24 15:03:00

Sounds good, you've come up with loads more good ideas - but if you've got rotating wheels in the back plane they will be pretty hard to see. Now you have the whole level rotating the player should find it easier to get up without this extra layer behind.2010-02-24 16:57:00
