I've been really excited about this game. i'm a huge fan of the genre, and love the fact that they represent all these little details about modern life that are NEVER represented in videogames. I just love it. I love the walking around and exploring environments like apartments, just doing regular everyday tasks. I'm serious too - it may sound like I'm being sarcastic, but I love this stuff in games, there's no better way to build atmosphere and to get to know the characters and become attached to them than to just live with them in a more realistic way for a while.

I don't know when I'm going to buy it, because right now I'm feeling overwhelmed. This is the most insane 1st quarter in videogame history, seriously. mass effect 2, bioshock 2, final fantasy xiii around the corner, heavy rain, and whatever else I'm leaving out, not to mention the games from last year that I never got around to buying, like new mario bros wii and brutal legend. just total insanity. So, this game's very much on my agenda, but I don't know when I'm actually going to get time to play it!

I picked it up today and while I haven't played much, I'm really digging it so far. The controls are a bit wonky and it starts slow, but I just love how different the game feels from everything else I've been playing. Like Teebonesy, I actually enjoy performing the regular everyday tasks in the game and interacting with the other characters as I get sucked into their world. It creates an attachment that I rarely feel in games.

So, yeah, so far, so good! If you liked the demo, I think it's safe to say that you'll enjoy the full game.

Before I made my wife buy new curtains that don't let light through, I used to take a couple blankets and throw them over the curtain rod - it worked really well!

I definitely want this game, but with FF around the corner, and a couple games I need to beat before that, I think Heavy Rain will have to wait a few months. It'll still be there when I come looking

*pant* *pant* It's 5 am here.... I have massive eye strain and my heart is racing. I started around 8 pm and didn't stop lol. Got my first playthrough done, got all four main characters to the end. I won't spoil anything, but.... simply Wow. I probably won't play from start to end again, but I will mix it up and see what happens when I let a MC die.2010-02-24 10:10:00

I understand how you feel, 4wheel.
I played the game for 3 hours in a row and it has been wow.
To bad I had to go to sleep.
This game is a masterpiece, and Teeb, seriously, you have to play it asap.

The interaction is limited, but every move you deliver is an adrenaline injection.
The game has more suspense than an horror movie and it has a sheer number of OMFG moments, even in only 3 hours.
I have to start the second section with Madison, when she arrives in that place with her motorbike.

Sigh... It's a recession, I'm gonna have to get this used when I can. Why do they make new games so expensive? Don't they realize it only discourages people to buy new ones 2010-02-24 14:42:00

I'm probably gonna make it a rental. I don't think it's the longest game in the world, and I've heard it doesn't have much in the way of replayability. Although I look forward to playing it because it looks awesome! The demo got me pretty pumped to play the real thing.2010-02-25 06:30:00

I very much enjoyed my first playthrough of this game. I managed to keep everyone alive, which I was happy about and enjoyed the story. I want to play through again to see how things can end differently. This was worth buying, I think. I believe that this game does over replayability. There are many different ways to handle the situations presented throughout the game and several different endings for the characters. You can't do everything in just one playthrough.2010-02-25 18:45:00

OK it came out in the UK last night, i completed it, Saved Shaun, but all 4 of my characters died, i found out who the killer is as well but the police didn't.
I absolutely loved it and will probably play through again tonight. I played from 4- 11:20 so it was quite lengthy for me, also I got about 44% of the trophies.

Someone is experiencing issues with this game?
I played the first 4-5 hours of the game without any problem, but i am now at "Le Serpent" (the scene with the snake Ethan can break) and the game audio suddenly stopped, and the game freeze randomly. I tried and tried again, same problem. There is not a specific instant where the game freeze in this scene, but it freeze at a moment or another.
This is very irritating since this game is awesome!

did you download the 1.01 patch because that is supposed to break the game, not having audio there would be a real shame since its an incredible scene. if you downloaded that patch delete the Game Data (Not save data) and reinstall.

The only problem would be you wont be making another origami bird dont download the patch I didn't and i didn't have many problems. and the problems I did have took half a second. I played through the game without turning of my playstaion, or going to the main menu.

OK I have written a full review sorry for the double post but i thought it was necessary

Heavy Rain as most people know is the highly ambitious PS3 exclusive title by French developer Quantic dream. It is a game that I have been intrigued about since it was first announced. Before I start i'm going to say that this review will be totally spoiler free (I hope), and this is kind of an important thing with this game because as everyone knows it relies heavily on the story.

So you put the game in and instantly it asks you to install a 250Mb patch, STOP, there is many a story saying that the patch make the game freeze every 30 minutes or something crazy like that. The only bad thing is without this patch installed you cant downlaod the taxidermist DLC. Well I lie a little but i will get to that in a minute.

Now you get into the game after the patch whether or not you downloaded it to find out you need to install a whopping 4GB to your hard drive, you think all well and good i'll make a drink or something, then it tells you to get out the piece of paper in the box, I thought hmm I wonder what this is about.(Because being a normal gamer I didn't look at instructions) I was surprised when i found out that the install guides you step by step to make the "Spanish Pajarita" the origami figure that you see on the front cover. This is a very relaxing task and if your as crap as me at folding paper the install will finish before you do.

Now for gameplay and no this doesn't just have you perform quick time event after quick time event after quick time event, it is a lot more involved than that. You start the game playing as Ethan Mars and the first part of the game has you just learning to use the controls, some movements are complex some are a bit easier. An example of this is pushing up on the right stick to sand up, simple enough, but then it gets more complex like holding L2, L1, R2, R1, Square and the right stick in a spirally direction. OK so that was a bit over complicated but that is pretty much as difficult as it gets. there are also events were you have to perform the action slowly, such as shaving or laying plates. It sounds stupid and why would you want to play this game, but without controlling it yourself it is difficult to understand how it feels right.
If your in a fight missing an event wont kill you and send you back to the beginning of the fight, it will just give you opponent the upper hand, it is this that makes each scene exiting because you dont know what going to happen, you might miss a button press and then you get a depressing feeling (Not a suicidal feeling) that I might die now.

Really I dont want to go to far into the story, I just want to say what everyone probably already knows, The origami killer is.......

Well I wasn't going to spoil it, if you have read the wiki page you will already know thats why I always stayed away from the story summary. Seriously this is an brilliant story, it always keeps you guessing and when something big hits you you really think " OH MY GOD I DIDN'T SEE THAT COMING" it is hard to fully describe how the story hits you emotionally but i'll try.
Think about the movie I am legend now think about getting kicked in the nuts at the scene where he kills his dog and thats about how emotionally connected you become to these characters. If one of your characters dies which for me all 4 did it really hits you hard.

Basically what I am saying is that Quantic dream have passed the test, they have created an utterly compelling storyline and a brilliant game. So how do we move on from that with the complaints.

At some points the audio will skip for a fraction of a second, and at some point you will see some "LAG" with the game, the thing is though its only for a fraction of a second and it never really annoys you. Now as I said earlier with the patch installed peoples games have been crashing, without the patch i didn't have anything like this happen, I played through the entire story without turning off my console and it took about 7 and a half hours to complete and that was with FBI agent Norman Jayden dieing half way through.

I would give this game 9.5 / 10 if they manage to patch out the minor bugs it would be a solid 10 but right now I cant give it that. This is definitely a game i will play through again and by next week I will probably have a platinum trophy because tis is a true masterpiece.

I just got through this game tonight in one sitting.... Wow what a masterpiece! Apart from being the longest 'movie' I've ever 'watched', I thought it was incredibly immersive and well written. I was pretty happy with my ending. Everyone survived, and for the most part everyone ended up living happily ever after... With the exception of FBI dude, who ended up getting attacked by Virtual toy tanks.... in his mind o.o2010-02-27 12:32:00

I'm waiting for some guides to see all the endings.
Even if my actions killed only Norman during the very last ARI segment, after the ending only Madison had survived
I installed the patch and didn't experience any kind of freeze.
I have a 40GB PS3 but I changed my hard disk with a 250GB Western Digital.
I always read that if you change the hard disk you have less problems with the system.

All 4 characters survived for me. I would be interested to see how it all plays out if all of them die. This game is great since there are so many ways it can end. Yeah, seriously, wow - having finished this game, I must please beg everyone here to USE SPOILER TAGS, because holy crap is it ever important with this game.

That said, spoilers ho!

So it had some truly amazing sequences. I love that this is a videogame that represents incredibly intense sequences that you would never dream about seeing in another game. In an average videogame, you might use violent weapons to kill hundreds, sometimes thousands of nameless people/creatures and one or two named people. In Heavy Rain, you might be tasked with an extremely intense scenario in which you have to... cut a section of your finger off? Escape from a submerged car? try to find your lost son in a crowded mall? wipe your fingerprints off a crime scene before fleeing? And every single person you come across has a character and a name and a face all their own, even the tiniest bit parts like the creepy desk receptionist at the hotel.

I just love this stuff, I think it's amazing. This is a game where violence, even small acts of violence, can have serious repercussions.

but it's really an incredibly elaborate choose-your-own-adventure movie than it is a game. Even Fahrenheit I think had more things to do in many of the sequences just to play with. You could really take your time and explore places, live in them to your heart's content - whereas here, I found myself rarely ever with that luxury. The crime scene investigations maybe but that's about it. You really couldn't take two steps in other sequences without running into the next cutscene or running feverishly short of time. In Fahrenheit, one of the chief means by which you got to know the characters you played as was simply by living in their homes. You learned your way around their apartment, you'd listen to their music, have a bite to eat, read their email, watch their tv, take in the view from their balcony, meet their neighbors, use their bathroom - for the most part, you had all the time you wanted to do this. There's a tiny tiny bit of that in Heavy Rain, but almost always without the time. You only get the quickest glimpses.

Probably my favorite part of the game is when you take your son home from school a couple years after the "accident". Everyone's depressed. All the kid cares about doing is watch tv. You're tasked with being a father. Feed him, make sure he does his homework, gets to bed on time, and most importantly, to just connect with him... with the clock ticking as fast as it does, you find you barely have room to do half this stuff, along with turning on the lights when it gets dark, and just exploring the house for god's sake. don't even dream about stepping outside to watch the sun set in the stormy backyard. Or do, but you're leaving your kid to rot his brain on cartoons. It's easy to complain here about the lack of time to do everything, but that's the point. your character is clinically depressed, unable to cope with his regret and guilt after years, desperate but hopeless in his attempts to connect with his surviving son. You can't make your son care about you. And before you can even hope for any kind of communicative breakthrough, you realize it's way past his bed time. A sense of regret sets in - it's too late. This is early in the game, and compared to what comes later, the stakes are as low as they can be here - it's preparing you for how to play the game. When something doesn't go perfectly, you don't reload the chapter and try again - you live with it. You plow forward, you make that remorse and that guilt part of the experience.

When have you ever experienced something quite like this in a VIDEOGAME?

This is all fascinating stuff, but I found myself so often glimpsing places that were exquisitely detailed and realistically designed, and wanting to be free to explore them and to live in them. But it just wouldn't happen. You got little rest periods in the hotel between origami trials. That was about the extent of it. Every time I longed to visit that store across the street, i could never get to it because a cutscene would interrupt, or it was just woefully inappropriate considering the context of the sequence. this is a pretty limiting game, and for being so open-ended it is very linearly driven. If something like this were incorporated into a larger picture, if you could get to know not just your apartment and relationships with intimacy, but also your car, your neighborhood, your city - to let the story breathe in a larger context, to play out even more of the in-between mundanity that builds up to the bigger moments - that would REALLY be a revolution. Instead I think Heavy Rain offers the glimpse, and it's amazing, but it's also very, very limiting.

Also, it has to be said. The voice acting is terrible. What a shame this is, when it's not hard at all to get highly talented name actors to do videogames these days. The actor playing Madison is the clear standout. But these other british actors are being tasked with performing american accents they clearly can't do. Most of the voice acting is nigh on atrocious and completely clashes with the otherwise emotionally somber mood. But they look AMAZING, the faces are incredible, and I've never been more engaged by a load screen. Just seeing the faces close up, I never got sick of just watching these people onscreen, it was god ****ed marvelous to look at.

I thought the "character twist" late in the game was very clever, and I admit I didn't see it coming, but it amazingly all fit together when you think about it. After that point though I didn't enjoy it because it suffered from the same problem that a lot of these similar "character twists" have in movies - suddenly the character that up until that point has been an absolute sweetheart becomes a cold, cruel, menacing *******. And not only that, but they even take away your control of him - "sorry, now that he's the bad guy, he's less of a human being, so you don't get to control him anymore, and also he's going to be a growling monster and try to murder you gruesomely."
Not cool, Heavy Rain. Not cool.

my first playthrough i did good with ethan and madison but i did bad with jayden
so my second run will be my jaeyden and madison run, ethan wont do a thing, let's hope i can still get a happy ending using just jaeyden and madison... i love this game

That's understandable. I don't know how different the story is, but I'm assuming the major pieces are the same across all playthroughs - for example, the identity of the origami killer, I can't imagine will ever change. I didn't chronicle what my ending was in the spoiler, I mainly talk about the gameplay itself.

I had a good time revisiting some of the more intense and surprising sequences just to play around and try different things - but in the end I decided to shelve the game. Maybe later on down the road I'll revisit it, after I've forgotten most of what's happened and what choices I made. That would make an interesting second playthrough, but I just don't think the game's going to hold up for me if I play it again right away. So rather than treat it like a rental, I'm going to treat it like a book. I've read it; Now it goes on the shelf. Someday I may want to return to it, and that's why I bought it instead of checking it out from the library.

I'm just afraid of oversaturation. Of becoming too familiar with the gameplay and scenes, to the point of not being thrilled or surprised anymore.

Any of you guys having trouble with save data corruption? My husband finished the game a few nights ago and went back to try to get some of the other endings to find that his data wouldn't load. He didn't turn it off while it was saving or anything. The credits rolled, he went to the title screen and then shut it off. The next day the save data looked like it was there, but he would just get a black screen. Mine loads fine and I did the same thing as him.2010-03-12 15:47:00

well.... I suppose if you exit before the automatic saving, you can reload it up and load from the last time it saved ( you know when it's saving when the little origami figure is flashing in the corner), then it's possible to. But why do that? You can't exactly lose at the game. And you can always restart the chapter.2010-03-22 17:56:00

You can restart from any point using the chapter select and then electing to save your process.2010-03-23 10:27:00

Just finished it. I'm guessing I got the best ending. Everyone survived and I caught the killer.

It's awesome. It's like a big playable episode of Criminal Minds. Very cool stuff.
