The Grassy Peaks - By: Masterlemons

The Grassy PeaksLemonSage.
A simple and short nature-based level mostly focused on jumping. It is my first level, and I like how it turned out. I wish it could have been longer but I took a 2-week long break and that stunted my interest. However, I did manage to complete it; so I hope you enjoy it for what its worth. I'll post screenshots when I have the time, but right now I'd just like to get it out there. Anyways, please leave feedback and give it a try, I promise it will be amusing at the least.

EDIT: Well, heres the pics. I had to use a webcam, making the quality unbearable, but try to focus on the actual level instead =P

Looks interesting! I downloaded the level and will give it a play. I'm falling asleep at my computer so I think feedback will need to happen tomorrow. 2010-02-23 07:10:00

Hi Master lemons!
I played your level and wanted to give some feedback.
Its a straight forward platformer which is looking nice and is fun to play. You really managed to create natural feeling.
I would like to point out a few things that could be improved.
Fisrt of all it could be longer. You mentioned that you lost the interest. I would make the creating pause even longer then, start an other project or just wont publish it.
The sliding board thing at the end didnt work right cause the block of dissolve material didnt dissolve when grabbing the board. Did you forget to attach the switch to it?
Last thing is that its very simple (but for a first level this is great!). I know it gets harder now to make a level that really stands out. But try to find your own style and you will be fine!

So its a fun little level and i gave it 4 Stars!

Thanks for the feedback! I was thinking about abandoning the project but I figured I might as well get it done. My next level will be longer. Also, the switch worked for me when I played it again from downloaded levels, so I'm not sure what went wrong.2010-02-23 13:07:00

This level was awesome, but as you were right, it was kind of short.
A little bit too short.
Anyways, I gave you :star::star::star::star::star:'s

I just finished playing this and found it to be a bit under polished. Now the level was a good bit of fun but it did have some faults. I found its design to be a bit to simplistic and short. It for me was too strait forward in platforming used to death in a ton of other levels. Really what i have to say is that is that it is not too good but it is not too bad it was just average. I gave it 3 stars.2010-02-24 07:27:00

Thanks both of you for playing! Tominater, I'll try to improve on the gameplay, I completely agree that it didn't make full use of switches and things like that. This was sort of meant to relax to, but my next one will have much more variety.2010-02-24 13:14:00

Hey masterlemons-

Love the name by the way - great PSN too. Kind of reminds me of ... lemonyness.

Ok, played the level through a few times and loved it. It's short and sweet, and it plays very well. You did a wonderful job creating a surreal yet serene environment, and your choice of music is spot on. After I played the level the first time I thought to myself "Well, that was relaxing." It wasn't until afterwards I noticed your post about the level being intentionally relaxing - I'd say you accomplished your goal there. This might not have enough white-knuckle action in it for many players, but I love this kind of thing. You made good use of the corner editor and added just the right amount of stickers. Very neat and clean.

The obvious bad thing about this level is that it's very short. It almost feels like an introduction to a much larger level, but realize how much work you must have put into it regardless. I don't count the length as a bad thing as it seems to be a "testing the waters" type of publish. (The pool's fine - come on in! ) My only major complaint is the camera angles you used. I know what you're trying to do with the camera zones, and while it was a good try the end result is kind of disorienting and makes the level less enjoyable. The jumps early on in the level are especially weird as the camera swoops left and zooms, then recenters all while you're in mid-air. Ack, where's my Dramamine? Going forward I suggest more subtle camera work. Camera zones are an absolutely essential element to any level, but a little goes a long way. Fewer, larger zones with subtle camera work are the way to go - a good place to start is to take whatever zoom or angle you think you need and cut it in half. My other gripe is that the first half of the level is one layer deep (which is fine) but is built on the back layer. This means that you can jump down and land in front of the scenery waaaay at the bottom on the floor of the level. The way you put the level together is fine, but next time put the single-layer sections on the front layer, making it very difficult (or impossible) for the player break out of the level. Be sure also to include two-layer thick gas across the entire floor of the level.

This level was short and to the point, so I don't have much else to write about. I was hovering around 4 stars for this, but I bumped you up to 4.5/5 (5 stars in game) because of the great overall environment and experience you put together. I'm looking forward to your next creation!

Hi, masterlemons. You did cool level with interesting environment, but it is so short. When I just begin to enjoy it - upss , here is the end. Anyway - cool level. Here my 4 :star: for it.2010-02-26 10:07:00

Yup, I will make the next one longer. As Taffey said before, this was basically a test to see the community's response to levels. I assure you my next one will be longer, but expect it to take longer to make too! =P2010-02-27 03:40:00

I liked this level. The platforming was nice, the layout had a simple but elegant look to it. This was a relaxer. Very easy but not boring which is good. My niece has a psp but no wifi connection and when she comes over this weekend I'm going to tell to DL this because she loves these kinds of levels, and so do I.

This was a great first level, I have no complaints except the fact it was very short, but I have a short level too so I can't fault you there.

Also it was pretty, and I like levels that have a good art style and stick with it the whole way like you did.

Five stars and a heart, plus I hearted you as a creator because if that's your first level, I want to keep an eye on your progress.

Hidy Ho Marterlemons! I promised that I would check out your level, and now that I am finally finished with mine and it is published, I actually have time to check out other peoples' awesome levels

Anyway, let's get right down to business:

I love how Taffey said that this level felt like you were "testing the waters", because that is spot on with how I felt! And in all honesty, for a first level, this is very very good! I think that your scenery is excellent for a first shot, and I am actually surprised that this is your first shot since it is so good.

I'll start off with the gameplay, and then go into detail about scenery at the end...

The gameplay was super straightforward run-and-jump platforming, but that certainly isn't bad. You had some great camera angles tossed in there, and cameras are something that I wish that more authors would utilize in a cool way. I also loved the little ride down the hill at the end. I usually hate stuff like that for some reason, but yours just intrigued me. Maybe it was because it was an excitingly bumpy ride, or maybe it was because of the unique sled thing

My only gripe with the gameplay was the part on the bridge where you made it collapse out from under the player. I am never a fan of a cheap kill, and that felt like a cheap kill to me since I had no way of knowing it was coming unless I was looking for that tiny bit of dissolve material holding it up. Plus, once it collapses, the rest of the bridge magically floats? But it really wasn't a big issue, and I'm guessing that you were just trying out new mechanics. Maybe it would have been better if you had had the bridge piece fall as you were walking up to the bridge instead of right as you landed on it and it is too late.

Let's get to scenery now...

The trees looked great, but it felt like they could use a bit more corner editing to get them to meet up better with the leaves. I doubt that they will ever look great (I used the same style of tree in my level "Now and Then", and they turned out funny looking as well, but it is a good funny looking in my opinion, just like the way I feel about your trees ), but I think that it would look much better if I couldn't see the background through the hole between the branch and the leaves. Another issue is that you use the same tree over and over again. It would have been nice to see a bit more variety, mainly since the player is commonly climbing the trees.

But no fears, because I saw some HUGE potential at the end of the level. Right before the sled ride you did a number of things that showed me you have a good grasp on what makes a level look good (and play good). There is a section before the sled ride where you layer the material so that the back plane has a little hill while the front plane does not, and there are also trees in the foreground and the background. This part looked excellent! And then, right after that, you had the player jumping off rocks in the background onto trees in the foreground and it was all so perfect! If you could just capture the way you built that part and use those mechanics in an entire level (with some extra stuff for flavor), it would be hard to tell that you haven't already my 5 levels

On other pointer for something to play around with when decorating is to layer materials on top of eachother. What I mean by this is to have your main material which you are walking on, and this material takes up one or two planes, but you also have a Zero-Thickness plane in front of the plane you are on. It can be a really cool effect if you use a different material and place it in front of the plane you walk on, but have it be jagged or uneven with the plane you are on. If you want an example of this, check out VelcroJonze's level Fort Sugar III. There are many other levels that do it, but I just saw it in that one recently.

Also, never forget to have fun with the corner editor! It is your friend!!!

Alrighty, that is all I have. Great work on your first level, and I will look forward to more from you

Thanks for the lengthy review!

I was going for a simple platformer feel, which I've mostly stuck to with the level I'm working on right now while adding some challenge to it. I did try to work with cameras, mostly because in my opinion a level doesn't feel complete without them. About the ride, I felt like I needed to do something at least moderately big at the end, and I liked the idea of taking the ordinary formula and making it bumpy without it being enough for the sled to flip. The bridge was mostly an experiment I did to see how it would work out, and I also noticed the fact that the bridge just floated in mid-air afterwards =P

I've had some of experience in scenery from programs like Spore, so it wasn't technically my first attempt, but it was hard moving my style into 2D so I'm happy it worked out. About the trees, I was a bit lazy by not adding variety, so I'm guilty there. I also love how you noticed the one little cliff with the forest-y flavor, because I loved working on it. Unfortunately my current level isn't exactly compatible with that style, but I'm planning on my next level having more of that foliage.

A lovely, even if too short, level. It's a very nice first effort. I liked how you kept the theme through the level: you could sense the danger of such heights.

My only complains are the length (but it's ok since it's your first level and you were just practising with the editor) and the bridge part: it was kind of cheap... and the floating remains of the bridge felt out of place in an otherwise flawless level.

I voted 4 stars, but favourited the level to help you with promotion. I'll be looking forward to your next work.
