Hi everybody! trip090 here with another fantastic level!

This level has been around for some time now - it was the first proper story level I ever published!

Help the homeless folk of Quiltland get their homes back! Find your way through the depressing slums and through the sewers below. Stay clear of rats and help the people of the slums with their problems. Meet the residents and their quirky ways. This level is full of puzzles and platforming goodness!

I'm willing to do 10 F4F. Just enjoy this level!

Here are some screenshots to feast your peepers on!

P.S. I am constantly updating this level and adding more and more detail. Don't be surprised if the level looks slightly different from the screenshots.

P.P.S. I do realize how rough the level looks but it was my first level. I've improved so much since then and I'm making it better as I go. I do think this level has a lot of character!

P.P.P.S. This level is full of secrets. Try grabbing the characters to find them!

I've added even more detail to the level so the screenshots do look different from the level (but not that different). I've posted more screenshots PLUS some bonus screenshots of the new Save Quiltland! Part 2: The Dungeon, a new adventure following on from The Slums. Enjoy!

I played the level, and I thought it played and looked good.

Puzzles and backtracking: that's what I like in LBP. That's what you give in your level. Overall I say you did a pretty good job on blending the puzzles and platforming together. The text sections are pretty well... Text-heavy, but that doesn't seem to scare people out of your level. And the difficulty shows that too; it's so easy that even the bomb survival fanatics can get through it. Only thing that the majority could gripe about here is the length, but that doesn't bother me.
I also like how it actually has a plot, unlike 99% of the other LBP levels

I think my only major gripe with the level is the artistic design. I didn't like it very much. I sometimes got a disgusted feeling when playing through it, but I guess slums are supposed to do that...
Also, the flashing light on the wheel puzzle was annoying, it hurt my eyes.

I think you ended the level great, When you finally come into a calm garden with water and all kinds of flashy things. Lifts the depressed feel out of your shoulders.
Overall, I think it's a good level. Just not the one for me.

Thanks for the feedback!

Taking in what you said, the design was meant to make you feel, well, disgusted like you said. After all, it's the slums but maybe it's not everyone's cup of tea.

I agree that the light on the wheel can be irritating. I'll probably change it.

Thanks again for the feedback!

Hey, thanks for your feedback on my Gas Factory level. Just played your slum level and thought it was awesome. The backtracking was very clever - I particularly like the way you backtrack and go down through the sewers then get elevated back out at the same point you left. The level wasn't exactly pretty but it's not supposed to be - it had an authentically rusty look - and you got the decoration in the sewers just right - reminded me of my own sewer level a bit . It's good that it's not a one-off too, makes you look forward to the next one.

The wheel puzzle took a while. Maybe make it bigger or add a light to the ball so people can see what's happening. But awesome level anyway, man.

thanks for the feedback! i've always been a little unsure about the wheel. i think ill have to modify it.

just wondering, does anyone think i should use the 3D layer glitch on this level, in particular the river?

Very cool level. I really like the way the puzzles are integrated in the gameworld, so it makes sense why you are pushing buttons, pulling levers and pushing balls of cloth around. The puzzlewheel was very ingenious.

Good atmosphere, jumping across floating garbage, stomping rats, getting back stolen cardboard box-houses, almost getting killed by dropping through the crumbling stairway above the gas.

Also I liked the design of your characters. The giant rat in the sewers was vey nice. And of course the character at the end, with the Poe-quoting raven. You can never have enough Poe. (By the way, for more Poe-inspired gaming: have you played ezBadfish survival Poe-esque game, simply titled 'Poe'?)

Background of your level was a bit square and uniform, could have used some more crooked lines perhaps? The sewers looked great. Also the ending area, by the scoreboard was beautifull.

All in all: very good level, I'll certainly play part 2.

It would be great if you could take a look at one of my two levels, and give me some feedback.

thanks again!

Hiya
I think you have a nice graphical style in this level. Your houses give a good atmosphere but i think they could use more variety. Your first few puzzles were well put together and I thought jumping across the roofs was very cool. Sadly you lost me at the rotating maze puzzle. I've seen too many of them and yours moved very slowly and was taking ages to complete. So sorry I quit probably about half way through that puzzle. I suggest you either speed it up or make a lot less doors to get through.

I thought setting it in the slums was pretty original, but be careful you dont cause offence by implying that homeless people are lazy.

Lurvely level, especially the artwork and random debris, I found only two points that could be awesomeized:

More checkpoints: I was a bit annoyed at the part when you have to go back to the sewer entrance, because although there is a checkpoint just before that grab monkey-bar thing, there isn't one after it, which is essentially the same thing when you are going backwards through the level, and anyone without any monkey-bar expertise (naming no names, ME) has to respawn quite a distance to the right every time they fall in. [RANT!]

Bug: I tried to get the coin into the lift. Before it was open. Then it opened. On the coin. Coin dissapeared. I cried.

Random ranting aside, these shouldn't be hard to fix at all, and the level was otherwise very good! I hope it didn't go on for much longer after the elevator bit, as i kind had a huff and left

this is all good! a nice bit of constructive criticism.

@Chris Haldor
didn't foresee the coin crush thing but easy to fix. i'll just make another one spawn.
please play again though.

@TheAdipose
i knew that wheel was a curse and a bad idea! come back and play the level again soon. i'll update it with a new puzzle instead of the wheel (im thinking washing line + elastic). Plus i've recently updated it with the 3D layer glitch which i learned from your tutorial. if it wasn't 3D when you played it, play it again!

thanks for the feedback!

P.S. anyone who i need to give feedback to please be patient! i've got quite a few to get through!

P.P.S. (i really need to stop doing these) i'm posting the updates on this thread soon. keep your eyes peeled.

That's right. The title's correct. Recently, I've updated this level with the 3D (or extra layer as some like to call it) glitch. This is my first time using it but I think it looks pretty good. It's given the level the extra depth and atmosphere it needed and sent the thermometer shooting into the sky. So, without further ado, the screenshots!

http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/9937/aphotoa.jpg
The thin background houses now have depth. I've added a cityscape background in the distance.

http://img718.imageshack.us/img718/1508/aphoto1r.jpg
More depth.

http://img191.imageshack.us/img191/6582/aphoto2i.jpg
Warehouse in the background.

http://img191.imageshack.us/img191/9272/aphoto3.jpg
This is the other part of the update. I hated the puzzle wheel so I decided to get rid of it. This is it's replacement. It's a good simple puzzle to get the string. It fits in the theme a lot more, as opposed to a big wheel that was just...there.

http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/2637/aphoto5w.jpg
Little guy in front of the camera. Say hello! In the background is a warehouse on the banks of the river.

http://img534.imageshack.us/img534/1622/aphoto4.jpg
The river now looks like a river as it stretches into the background. It's difficult to see from the picture but it also stretches to the front as well.

http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/701/aphoto6.jpg
The riverbank stretches back into the fog.

http://img191.imageshack.us/img191/1305/aphoto7.jpg
Little guy on the riverbank in front of another warehouse.

http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/7665/aphoto8g.jpg
Nice shot of the warehouse's side.

http://img191.imageshack.us/img191/6712/aphoto9.jpg
All of this gives the level that grimy urban feel this level needed.

So there you are! Updated with 3D! So what are you waiting for? Go and play it!

Have fun!

Another quick update (nothing big).

I got rid of that weird zipline thing. I was never that keen on it, it was prone to a weird bug that I couldn't fix and apparently, according to a comment left on the level, the zipline broke (not sure how). I replaced it with platforms, just like, well no, exactly like the ones below:

http://img691.imageshack.us/img691/1305/aphoto7.jpg

I think they're a lot better.

Play and have fun!

Thanks for the feed back. so it's fine with one player? i've had problems in the past with multiple players. but if it was fine, i'll test again with a friend just to check.

steal one of my little tricks? go ahead. it'll be nice to know i've influenced someone.

Played the new version and it was much shinier (specially that coin thing's gone ), but i managed to find another "AAAAAARGH!" bug.

At the end of the level, after talking to... crow man, the door closes. And then you can die in that river. If you are an idiot. Like me.

Simple to fix, just put in a new checkpoint or don't have the wall slide down!
I'll play it again when you update it, and i'm sure i'll find a new and exciting way to break the level horribly.

ah! thanks for that. i've got to admit, you're a fantastic level tester. you find bugs which i don't! but you're right, it's easy to fix. i'll put another checkpoint in.

i'll probably need a tester like you to test the part 2 soon. you're pretty good.

i'm going to update this thread with a teaser of Part 2: The Dungeon tomorrow. i think it's pretty good.

OK. Soon I'm going to need testers for my next level which is part 2 to Save Quiltland! Part 1: The Slums. It's close to finishing, really close. So I'm drumming up some attention by posting this teaser to get your LittleBigPlanet taste buds drooling. Hopefully, this will get some people interested. So, here are the screenshots!

Thanks!
