Spice & COpoms
Something is fishy in “Spice & CO”.
A prosperous spice industry, or an evil weapon factory?
This is one of those levels I have a hate/love feeling with it.
I hate the amount of hours, trial time, testing, research… Things that are hardly appreciated in a “fast food-level demolish” community.
And what I love is the feeling of having made something that makes you feel proud (I wonder if it’s worth ).

I can’t deny many influences in this one. The main one would be “Donkey kong Country”, but myself not having owned a SNES, it wasn’t there were I got the inspiration. It was the amazing Dan_e2040’s creation “Barrel Cannon Blast” which really inspired me.
I always though Dan’s level was very underplayed, underrated, and “undereverything” . But I also thought the system “tap R1 to get launched”, should be improved, and the fact of building a whole level “only” with barrels, didn’t appeal to me.

There’s also a big cheeky wink to “Roll out the Barrel” by CuzFeeshe, (I hope he doesn’t kill me for that )

I would like to thank all the amazing creators who tested and advertised me, specially Jwwphotos (my official tester ), Anposteller (Thanks for your advice buddy), SteveBigGuns, Bender_82, Fijski8, Tactical_Gunner, ComishGuy, Smartalex69, XVoodeedooX, Sammrocks… and many more I can’t remember, who played and tested this level to death when it was only built with standard wood and cardboard.

I hope you like this level!
Thanks!

Oh! thanks
More levels like this? I don't like to repeat myself a lot, but, mmh... not a bad idea. I've got some other versions of barrels: automatic launch, tap R1... and many other moving barrel-platforms I discarded not to make the level too repetitive. Who knows... But thanks for playing it, and very glad you enjoyed it

Playing the final version was the most enjoyable thing I have played on lbp.

The simplistic yet stylish and well designed look to the level was so well done. In terms of gameplay, I think it just meets exaclty what I want from a gameplay driven level. Everything abut this level was perfect. I will be definitely be playing it again unlike almost all others I played.

In my opinion this is your best level and the best level on lbp by far. 5 stars and hearted.

Well done for creating something so amazing!

Lots and lots of fun! I love how this entire level was designed around gameplay. Graphics were nice, but it seemed with this level you relaxed a bit and just concentrated on how the player was entertained.

Another quality level!

This is yet another Poms masterpiece! The gameplay and puzzles were awesome fun! The puzzles brought me back to the Bunker! Great stuff and nice way of connecting to your gameplay roots!
5 stars and hearted.
Now... I read your comments and see that I am not the only one that died at the train part and was unable to finish. This should be fixed somehow. You ride inside the barrel and fall into the train, now if you die on the way to the train, it leaves without you. Someone posted same problem on your comments. Anyways.. Masterpiece bud! Now play my new level already!!!!

Yeah, about the graphics, I tried to make it look as good as usual, but probably didn't spent so much time with them as I did adjusting barrels .
I thought gameplay was well adjusted, but the level was quickly tagged as "complicated" (???)
BTW, I hope you liked the "tribute" to your barrel level I did with the rolling barrel towards the end!

Thanks Fijski8 for feedback! Yeah I checked very quick that part when I saw your message, and changed it. So now it should be ok.
The train was supposed to leave when the check point lays onto it. Sack must activate that check point to fall on the train, so my idea was if Sack dies, the activated check point is already on the train. But this is not granted with multiplayer, and in fact it's a bit risky because who knows how the player will react...
So now the train only leaves when Sack is on it, and the check point is glued on the train. Problem solved.

Oh! and yeah... I used some puzzles I had for a possible "Bunker 2". Good point!

Magnificent level dude. 5 stars and hearted. I don't know how you managed to squeeze all that in given the thermometer restriction. You know you're playing a good level when you think you're nearly finished then you come across yet another section and instead of thinking sheesh not more, you actually think great even more fun.
Wonderful choice of materials and gaming devices. A platformer with real atmosphere and ambience rather than a sterile set.
At time of playing 885 players had played it with 504 completing it, I finished and my platforming skills aren't great. I found the difficulty to be medium and the fun very high.
You may be losing some players to frustration at the first barrel by the chillis where your first fired up and have to grab hold inside the barrel, once you know you have to do this it's fine but took me about twenty lives to figure out as I was trying to jump over and in to it. Right at the end when your fired up to the score board maybe you could hang some strings of bubbles to let people achieve a higher score.
Once again excellent level % stars and hearted.

Very good level, as usual poms. I think I liked the bouncy jumper whatevers more than the parts where I was running, but it was still an all around fun, good looking level. I liked all the hidden secrets too.

One thing, though, when I had to ride on the jalapeno it kept kind of bouncing me off. I eventually got it, but maybe you could replace it with something a little more sturdy?

Good points those two you mentioned. I was going to write a sign on the first upper barrel saying "grab", but finally didn't cause I thought it was too obvious, but certanly... is not that obvious.
Of course I had to "teach" the player to use the upper barrels sooner or later, and that simple jump-grab was the choosen place to do so.
I'll think about it maybe I'll change it or maybe I'll leave it.
Also good point about the score bubbles at the final jump. I think I'll do that.
Thanks also for your ingame comments!

Yeah the jalape?o thing is not very safe to stand still, but that's part of the story of the level (if there is one). The factory is using jalape?os to build bombs...
Anyway let me tell you, if you stand on the red part of the jalape?o it's completely safe. Only the green part is bouncing... I think I'll leave it like it is.
Anyway thanks for feedback!

This was some of the most fun I've had playing a level in a long time. The gameplay was a constant joy to do with my favourite part being the three large barrels that rotate 180degrees and half of each of them in water. I loved that section. This should definitely be a hit among all your fans. It is your best work.
My only problem was there was no dialogue, and if I hadn't read your showcase here first and the description, I would've had a hard time guessing what was going on. Some people don't read descriptions. Only a small niggle.

Great feel and gameplay. Only bad thing is inside of factory could've been corner edited more(at the start, not when you get into the parts of the factory with all the vines etc) It was bit square. The enemies were a tad small and jittery though. And the boss could've been more extravagant(I thought it was a standard enemie at first) but the rest of the levels amazing and really fun. Loved the train.2010-02-21 10:39:00

@killzonequinn07: Thanks for your feedback! You're right about the lack of dialogue. I supose dialogs are boring to me... but a small one just before facing the boss would be OK maybe.
Glad you liked it! thanks
@PaddyJ: Thaks for your feedback too . I agree with the points you suggested. About the factory being too square, I honestly don't know wich part you mean, but if it's the moving platform part, I have to leave it like this because of the mechanic of the moving platform. If it's where the fire section... I'll have a look
About the boss... well, this is not exactly a boss. It's a bomb manufacturing machine. I thought about a giant barrel trowing small fire barrels... but that would be a bit too unreal.
Thanks for your good and constructive feedback!

I'm a huge fan of Barrel Blast and Roll Out The Barrel so a level that takes it cues from both of these, then mixes it up and adds its own twists and turns is an automatic win for me.
Great job Poms, loads of fun, loads of charm, another top level!

Poms my friend... thanks again for the chance to help play test this for you. Another top notch level!

Of all your levels, I loved this one especially. As CCubbage points out, I enjoyed the focus on game play and the cute scenery that surrounds the level was endearing. To me it felt like a Poms/Mm/jackofcourse level if that makes any sense at all!!

This is one I think that I will be playing time and again just to destroy your heart play ratio!! ...no just kidding, but it is a very fun and addicting level for sure and one that I will revisit several times.

5 stars and a well earned heart! Congrats!

Jww!!! Something was missing in this thread... I was wondering where were you "hiding"!
Fun what you say about Poms/MM/Jackofcourse "mix"
Honored to be compared with such company, but I don't think I'm near Jack's stile or MM stile in this one, but have to admit that using the savana music, made me think of Flaming timberland levels. Funny how some levels make a song belong to it "forever".
Thanks for trying the level, I wanted you to join me some other times before publish, but time zone doesn't help...

LOL!! Not hiding... merely on a break and have been watching the Olympics quite a bit.

Sorry I missed you those other times! ..time zones are not our friend for sure and probably doesn't help that I leave myself logged on quite a bit while watching tv or away from the controller!!! LOL!! I have to stop that and save the life of my PS3 !!

Definitely my favourite of yours, Poms!

While I've always been able to appreciate your levels for the ingenuity and polish that resides inside them, I feel that with this one you have got hit on what I look for in a level...gameplay! It's so much fun and works brilliantly. I know you touched upon it and it is clear that you taken inspiration from Dan_e2040's level, I feel that you have definitely improved upon the barrel mechanic. With Dan's method I would hazard a guess at a lot of players becoming frustrated that they don't work consistently every time (because the strength of the bounce depends on how long you hold R1 for), here you have taken that frustration out of it, but kept all the fun in!

The level of tweaking to get everything at just that right difficulty is perfect. Some of the gameplay is right up my up my street too. The spinning surrounding in the water is absolutely fantastic. That's the kind of gameplay that I like to create, it's effectively just jumping, but it looks oh so good!

Fantastic Poms, would love to see you taking this kind of approach more often!

The only issue I found was that if I just tapped R1 instead of holding it, sometimes a huge lump of dissolve would come flying out with me. (Most evident on the last massive barrel.

Thanks for a fantastic feedback Jack! Glad you liked my "new" stile .
The dissolve thing flying out of the barrel happens mainly in the big jumps. I've tried to solve that this morning, and I think it works better now.
This never happened in the "barrel test level", It only happen in the final entire level and maybe it's because of the termo being maxed out.

Glad this level is enjoyed not only by the kids in cool pages, but also many people I care in this forum.
And the MM pick... well, I suppose the effort has been worth

Thank you!

Hi,

I am fairly new to this site as well as LBP itself, however I somehow managed to get you in my favourites list already and discovered your new level quite soon after publishing. It is truly a masterpiece, it's so good, I don't think I'll every even try to start to create my own levels.
Only thinking about how on earth your R1 release-style barrel guns work gave me sleepless nights.
Anyhow keep up the marvelous work, I am already looking forward to your next levels!!

It's a bit hard to explain, but the barrel hasn't got any mystery:
Two pistons are connected to a magnetic switch set to direction and glued to a crystal catapult which has got an emitter. This emitter places a piece of dissolve material on the catapult. This piece of dissolve material has a grab switch set to one shot, and connected to an emitter which places a small square box with a magnetic key near the magnetic switch of the two pistons. The same grab switch is also connected to dissolve the green material.

Will you be able to sleep now?

Yeah... the final jump to the scoreboard doesn't always work as it should... I'll solve that sooner or later.
I placed the scoreboard to one side just in case some players wanted to mess a while with the giant final jump, which is something I know some people do.

This was an outstanding bit of fun. No, poms it's not too long. Know how I know this? Cuz when I got to the scoreboard I was really bummed out. I'm also not saying it was too short, in fact I was impressed by how much you crammed in here. Just that I really didn't want the fun to end.

Great job... The gameplay was fantastic, almost always intuitive and just challenging enough to keep you on your toes. I loved the barrels - nuff said.

My only little nitpick would be on the section with three buttons that you must stand on - the first two to keep the giant-block-ceiling-thingy from squishing you, and third to open the next door. This third is where I would suggest a bit more camera to the right. I got squished twice because the door closes quickly enough that by the time I got to it, it had closed and I didn't understand what the switch was actually doing. Obviously I eventually figured it out, but it seemed like a bit of a cheap kill.

Other than that though, I could find no real flaws. I knew when I saw your name on it that I'd be in for a treat, but this one surpassed my expectations! Thanks for such good time!

Thanks for your explanations, simple mechanic but still brilliant methinks. And I thought my Master of Science in Computer Science would make me smart (meh..).
Of course my fond memories of Donkey Kong Country for the SNES kinda biased me into loving your little gem.
Anyhow, slept like a baby ;-) Keep up the good work, I'm looking forward to it.

Oooook... tell your friend he's right
I never owned a SNES, but I had some plays at some friend's. I also downloaded a SNES simulator to have a look at the game. But honestly, I didn't find the inspiration in there. I just checked it in case some bright idea came to me, but as I said, only dan_e2040's Barrel Cannon Blast inspired me and made me want to build the level.

Thank you very much for your feedback, and glad you liked it!

Good point what you mentioned about that opening door. I spent quite a few time adjusting that part.
A camera is activated at the moment the door is opened. I know the reaction time is very strict there, but there's time enough to cross the door... once you know you have to
My thought was "Ok, you'll probably die here, but when you retry, you'll know exactly what to do".
Anyway I'll probably make a small change in that part.

Thanks for you suggestion, and very glad you enjoyed the level

I played this with a group of 4 and we somehow got stuck on the wrong side of one of the walls of those spinning contraptions with the spikes and water. I have no idea how you might fix it, it was due to incredible luck and skill on my own personal part, I believe. I felt bad about breaking the level for these nice random folks though

It was really fun!

I think I know how that happened. I thought I had solved that problem...
It's very difficult to make this happen, but still seems to be possible.
I'll revisit that part to see what can I do.

Thanks!

Excellent level! Five stars and hearted. It's easy to tell you put a lot of time into this level to get everything to work right... and it shows.2010-03-15 03:14:00

This slipped under my radar, but thankfully the spotlight brought it to my attention! This level was fantastic! I loved the theme and the gameplay was very fun! Shooting from barrel to barrel brought back memories of Donkey Kong Country, I loved it! Nice work!2010-03-15 04:57:00

Great level! Not only did the platforming style worked out great, but the inspiration of "Donkey Kong Country" fitted really well in this level as you get launched by the barrels. This level also has a great use of real water, explosives, and paintinator. This level feels like I'm playing one of the "Donkey Kong Country" levels. Well done. :>
P.S. I also loved one of your other levels "The Bunker". The enemy designs of this level look volcanic and the puzzles are amazing.

Well, this is definitely solved. In theory this can not happen anymore (fingers crossed)

Thanks very much! Yeah... I spent a few time adjusting things, still adjusting though

Thanks Mr.!
Glad you liked it, and don't worry about it slipped your radar. I'm also a disaster posting feedbacks.
BTW, now that I remember I'll leave a feedback of your ZV2 as soon as I finish posting this

Thanks JustinArt! Nice you liked my new level, but nicer that you liked my one year old Bunker.
If you liked The Bunker, I got good news for you. I'm making The Bunker 2, and I hope it will be ready by the end of the month

I played this recently and loved it.The game play was fun, and I always thought that spice sticker was useless. But you totally proved me wrong.

Thanks a lot FROGBOY!
That spice sticker is still useless... xD I used it only because it gave me the idea for the title, and as a "tribute", I used it as the company logo xDD.

Thanks again!

Oh great.... here we're trying to keep his head small, and you go and blow it right up again....

Gonna have to fix this....

My barrel rolling was better, and Miracle of Life was better when the sperm-popping-rolling-circle of death was harder.

Ok, now we can live with him again. Now.... where's SteveBigGuns.... gotta knock him down a few pegs.

(for those of you coming after me with a pitchfork.... I am, of course, kidding)

Any moderator please?
CCubbage is having a jealousy attach!
(joooooke)

Sadly (for me), those two points you mentioned, are actually TRUE!... Aaaaaaaaaah!

I played this at the weekend and i must say it was really fun! I loved the way i popped from one barrel to another and the sounds went really well!
The whole design of the level was a great idea and the challenges were well thought out too!
5 stars and a heart Poms! Keep up the good work!

Thanks dude.
I doubt I'm making a sequel real soon. I had a lot of free time during winter, but this is over now.
A new summer season is approaching and I'm busy at work...
But I LOVE this level, and I don't discard anything.
Thanks for feedback!

This is my personal favourite from you poms. Theres actually only one bad fear about overusing the barrels but u made it actually very enjoyable. I scored 8th place in lvl today. The most I like the little puzzles around the level and boss was wonderfull too. Barrels were cute and I decided to little copy your idea about barrels to my lvl (hope you don't get angry to me). This might be the best level in whole lbp so far. I await something spectacular from you poms. As my favourite creator you should make it come out soon cause I dont want to get bored.
PS. Can you make a video about how to make barrelthings to bounce you even if you hold down R1?

5/5 and hearth to you.

Well, I must say that this is my favorite too
In an early version I was really abusing the barrels, but a good friend of mine told me "I like it, but some may say it's repetitive". I got the "message" at once, and I deleted some barrel areas and built some puzzles I was reserving for The Bunker 2.
About the barrel mechanics, I tried to explain the system some posts above, but I'm not too good in English language and I don't know if it's a clear explanation...

Thanks for your feedback dude! And nice to hear you like this level that much!

You seem to speak very good English already
By the by, really liked your level. Not complicated and loads of fun. Now people should be paying attention to what you do. Really can't wait to see what you do later

Hey, Poms. I just noticed your a seasonal worker... same here. I get all your snowbirds when they fly south, so I know all about the freetime.

Anywho, I played this level awhile back before I joined the site and it was amazing.

Just sayin'.

Yep dude... you're right. I've always been a seasonal worker, and I hardly have time to see my family at the moment, but by the end of October I get tons of free time.
Some may think it's a strange way of life, but where I live there are not many other options.

Glad you liked my "Spice & Co" level. Funny to think how quick I built it, but having all day free is a big help
