Best Video Game Stories?
Archive: 31 posts
Yep, what stories are the best in video game format? Myself, I tend to enjoy more character oriented stuff it seems... or at least JRPGs for some reason. Most of my favorite stories are more JRPG... The only other one would be Bioshock, and even that isn't as "awesome" to me since it doesn't really have any characters. But yeah, of those "cliche" RPGs... Final Fantasys 7 and 10 are the best out of Final Fantasy story wise for me. FF7 would have been better if it furthered threads related to Zack, and didn't have the sequels which ruined the secret ending for me... Final Fantasy 10 had the best ending out of any video game for sure, I'd say. Then my other two "big" story games, Tales of Symphonia / Tales of the Abyss... Those may be annoying to some, but I kid you not when I say Tales of the Abyss and its clone story with bad voice acting actually changed my outlook on life and it's meaning >_>. And Symphonia's villain just rocks me thinks. ... Meanwhile, "western" games like Uncharted 2 just don't excite me that much... Like Uncharted 23 really has a bad story methinks- awesome characters, but its story itself really sucks. Nonetheless... yeah. FF7, FF10, ToS, and TotA are my favorite video game stories... yay go me! XD ... yeah. Anyway... anyone else have any video game stories they actually like? for me, it's the games where you show up at some place, and the history of the place slowly unfolds as you move along. like Deadspace is a prime example. you show up on the ship, simply trying to fix it, but you end up saving the universe. another good one would be Portal. you show up at Aperture Science to do some beta testing for a gun, and you find the dark secrets of the mysterious voice that talks to you throughout the game. | 2010-02-20 01:22:00 Author: Mopthefloo Posts: 139 |
The Uncharted, MGS, and FF stories are all awesome. | 2010-02-20 02:51:00 Author: Shockwave4 Posts: 200 |
MGS, Good god yes. MGS is like Lost. If you don't have a smart brain a good memory, ti's going to suck for you, but if you're intelligent then it is GENIUS. Absolutely fantastic, I was entranced every step of the way. | 2010-02-20 03:19:00 Author: Astrosimi Posts: 2046 |
Infamous that ending oh man I think Uncharted had an awesome story, you would have to point out specifics for me to understand your "it sucks" comment. oh and LBP has undoubtedly the most thrilling and epic adventure story known to both man and sack XD | 2010-02-20 03:27:00 Author: Littlebigdude805 Posts: 1924 |

i actually found Uncharted 1's story much better than Uncharted 2's. because if you think of Uncharted like a jiggsaw puzzle, in Uncharted 1, they started with the corner pieces, and went around the edges, and found pieces to the puzzle but didn't ad them up until near the end of the game. so it was a lot more mysterious than the second game, where whenever they found a piece to the puzzle, it was instantly added to the board. | 2010-02-20 04:17:00 Author: Mopthefloo Posts: 139 |
I think that on the Lore side of things that The Elder Scrolls games have the best stories around. Other than that, MGS4 had an excellent story. | 2010-02-20 06:00:00 Author: qrtda235566 Posts: 3664 |
One of the best stories I've ever played is the Ratchet & Clank series. I mean, sure, the gameplay has been largely unchanged (didn't need any adjustments), but the whole plot is just awesome to see in play. The finale is definitely worth it. Another story (or, well, game) that I absolutely adore is, actually, Flower. The coolest thing about this game is that it never uses any dialogue, never uses any humans/animals... just the wind, the flowers, and high-voltage electricity . A very moving story from start to finish. And finally, of course, Infamous. It's still one of the best comic-styled stories out there, in my book. Still hate freakin' Zeke, though. Chubby weazel... | 2010-02-20 06:20:00 Author: Outlaw-Jack Posts: 5757 |
I must say...Dragon Age. Not necessarily because its story was THAT epic, but because of all the back-info, and all of the ways things interact. ToS definitely.Working on FFVII and FFX... ToA, I haven't played. MGS, I've read a bit on, and it's deep. I actually really liked Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn...again, nothing too groundbreaking, except for Ike's...well, his actions politically. And the whole Sonic series. Once Shadow got thrown in, it all got crazy-deeper. I guess I'm more character-oriented too... | 2010-02-20 06:35:00 Author: Ragfell Posts: 729 |
the Resistance background story the Bioshock story and the background the main GTA4 story the Halflife 2 story all Deadspace storys | 2010-02-20 13:12:00 Author: Unknown User |
I'm finding most modern "epic game" stories to be a little lackluster somehow, like they're cheesy action movies - Good action, awesome characters, but lame story with little development. In story centric games I think it's really important to build the right atmosphere... I think my favorite game in that regard is Deus Ex. The story and world is so fleshed out it's amazing, I still play it years later and discover new things. Too bad the second one wasn't nearly as interesting, but still a good game. Another favorite is Final Fantasy 8, especially the ending. Not a single line of dialogue and yet the messages are so powerful, that is master storytelling to me. Absolute mastery. I can appreciate the story of MGS and the detail to the world, I just think it's overly verbose. I believe master storytelling is done with a "less is more" approach, the conversations in MGS just drag on forever. Still loved it though. Also Bioware games in general are pretty awesome with their stories. | 2010-02-20 15:57:00 Author: Foofles Posts: 2278 |

FFVI is a classic and of course FFVII. I've lost faith in FF games from nine on though. They turned.. girly.. and touchy feely. I'm not saying that the story in FFX was bad really. The characters just turned me off. I think the story in MGS.. 4 especially was WAY heavy handed. Its the first game I played that felt like the cutscenes were the focus rather than the gameplay. In multiple sections the cut scene was twice or three times as long as the game play that preceded it. Loved Bioshock's story. ..and I'll through in Time Splitters 2. Now it maybe wasn't a GREAT story but it opened it up for some of the greatest character experiences in any game to date. | 2010-02-20 16:12:00 Author: ezBadfish Posts: 52 |
I thought Killzone 2's story was pretty good, doesn't really show in the game but it has a lot of backstory. | 2010-02-20 16:18:00 Author: Shris Posts: 126 |
Final fantasy vii without a doubt. Its a shame square seem to be getting worse with each game since ffix. They used to be a must have and now I doubt I will buy another game made by square again unless they go back to their roots. | 2010-02-20 16:22:00 Author: SteveBigGuns Posts: 423 |

Absolutely fantastic, I was entranced every step of the way. Hallelujah! InFamous & Prototype Both have Really Good Stories! Not sure which has the Best Plot Twist though? But Heavy Rain will be the Best Story of 2010!! | 2010-02-20 23:39:00 Author: Nurolight Posts: 918 |
"Shadow of the Colossus" is my favorite story, mostly because so much of the story remains untold & the player can only guess at the origins of the main characters, including Dormin, & wonder as to the ultimate fates of Mono & Wander, all of which is somehow prelude & backstory to "Ico". It feels like some rich ancient history, unearthed with whole passages & chapters missing. | 2010-02-22 06:48:00 Author: ApeCheese Posts: 369 |
Two words: Heavy Rain i thought you said two worlds cause if you did i would jump off a cliff Hmm Gears of war campaign was good in the 2nd one i kept playing it just to see what would happen Uncharted 2 was a good story too. Cant think of any others | 2010-02-22 21:44:00 Author: Snrm Posts: 6419 |

Bioshock 2 is pretty good in my opinion. | 2010-03-02 15:31:00 Author: Mod5.0 Posts: 1576 |
This is gonna be pretty weird to say, but CoD4 and MW2 campaigns were both great. MW2's campaign was probably better than the multiplayer. 'nuff said. | 2010-03-02 16:27:00 Author: Ragfell Posts: 729 |

Too bad the second one wasn't nearly as interesting, but still a good game. funny... the second i thought about deus ex, i read your post and i agree the atmosphere in deus ex was the best ever have you ever tried "The Darkness"? the atmosphere has a deus ex-ish feel to it, perhaps thats why i loved it... so Good story games ok 1.The Darkness 2.Deus Ex 3.Heavy Rain 4.Bioshock 1 and 2 that's it... and foofles if you are reading this, really give The Darkness a try, it has atmosphere, story and plot twist, oh and the music just goes so well with every scene, that's why i still once in a while beat it again, not soon enough too feel tired of it but not late enough to make it feel old... | 2010-03-03 04:44:00 Author: Racroz Posts: 406 |
... and foofles if you are reading this, really give The Darkness a try... Oh I have I have it, picked it sometime last year. Very nice game! I agree it has great atmosphere, the characters feel so alive since they motion tracked the voice actors so they show all those little nuances and idiosyncrasies you'd imagine people to when they talk. The story is pretty cool and unique, I don't think anyone's ever mixed mafia and demons before. | 2010-03-03 14:31:00 Author: Foofles Posts: 2278 |
LittleBigPlanet! It makes so much sense! Okay, both Uncharted games have a brilliant story, just perfect! | 2010-03-03 15:13:00 Author: napero7 Posts: 1653 |
I haven't played many games, as of yet. I just got PS3 last month, and have about 12 games. However, out those, Batman Arkham Asylum I thought had a cool narrative that wasn't ridiculous and some good dialogue and mystery. I've just started Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and so far I'm loving the modern-day Indiana Jones style plot and again the dialogue has been quite well written with some funny character moments. | 2010-03-03 16:48:00 Author: confoozed_will Posts: 14 |

The finale is definitely worth it. totally agree. ratchet and clank have the best story plots, especially the new one: a crack in time. they are perfect for video games. | 2010-03-03 17:10:00 Author: trip090 Posts: 1562 |
Star Wars: Knights of The Old Republic on the xbox was a fantastic story. Deus Ex was great to. | 2010-03-03 17:14:00 Author: GruntosUK Posts: 1754 |
I think the story of Half Life 2 is one of the most intruiging, innovative and interresting storylines in all the literature, films and video games i've read, seen or played. The emotion and sheer reality of the characters is also so well done. Alyx, throughout you really feel her confidence, humour, compassion for her father and her venerabilities. And that's just one of the characters. You actually care whether they live or die, like any character in film or literature or, dare I say it, one of your own family or circle of friends. | 2010-03-03 17:25:00 Author: The Gentleman Posts: 360 |
