My PS3 wont turn on

Archive: 34 posts

Ok, so I was playing ratchet and clank : a crack in time when it suddenly just froze and then my ps3 turned itself of and the red light was just flashing. When i press the power button it goes green for a few secs but then goes yellow and then back to flashing red.

Anyone help.

Yellow light? Than you have what is commonly known as the Yellow Light of Death. That most likely means you can say goodbye to your PS3.2010-02-18 21:45:00

Oh dear, theamilien, sorry to be the bringer of bad news, but Syroc is right.
mistervista and I, had this happen a couple of weeks ago to us. We couldn't do anything with the PS3 and couldn't get our game disc(LBP) out of the machine.
Is your PS3 a 60GB, they seem to be the ones that are failing with the YLOD. Is it still under warranty?
We had taken out the Sony Continuous Play insurance, so we got ours replaced pretty quick.

Its a 60gb, that i got in 2007, so the warranty is gone.

i wish i got continous play.

Ahhhh .... well...spilt milk and all that.

Thanks for the help everyone

You could ring Sony and ask them, but they won't admit to knowing anything about the YLOD.
I think you can send it to Sony to get repaired, but it will cost you (don't know how much, probably cheaper than getting a new PS3) and you will probably lose all your data.
Do you have your stuff saved to memory stick or anything?
Good luck and we hope you get it sorted somehow.

If you have a friend with a ps3 and you own a portable harddrive, you can take the hdd out of yours, put it in thiers. then back up the hdd, replace the hdds, and that way you SHOULD be able to repopulate yer new or refurbished one's hdd later.

Wow. that sounds insanely complicated to explain. but it's fairly easy to do.

thats good but it wont work you see the trouble in the Yellow Lights is this Tiny Chip inside the PS3, it melts off when the PS3 gets very overheated, so the only way to fix that is Sony, it problably costs like 150 i think.2010-02-19 01:43:00

Doesn't matter why the ylod happens. The hdd backup theory is sound... mostly. When you move the hdd to a new ps3 or to a friend's, you might be able to retrieve some of the data. I've never tried it so I don't know: it could be that the new ps3 will force you to reformat the hdd before it'll work with it, or it may reject the protected data: game data, dlc (which is also game data) and demos and stuff. It's certainly worth trying, but don't be surprised if it doesn't work as well as you'd like. Also, if you do it and it works, let the rest of us know, 'cuz I'd like to know.2010-02-19 03:46:00

So, are the 80GB able to be afflicted with the YLOD? The backwards compatible ones, I mean...2010-02-19 04:31:00

This happened to me and I had to get it repaired, but if you need to get discs out of the YLODded PS3 just do this:

1. Turn off at the main power switch above the electric cable (round the back, not the touch one but the one just above where the cable from the plug comes in).
2. Hold down the eject touch button.
3. Turn the main power switch back on.

Your PS3 will probably make a lot of fan noise (mine did) but your disc should come out. Hope this helps.

Ill give that a go, see if I can get the game out.

So if I can get it 'refurbished' by sony, would that mean I would lose all my DLC because its conected to my PSN account?

Or is the PSN account saved on servers or something instead of the system itself?

Your DLC should be fine the DLC you buy is saved on the servers yes. To re-download DLC you bought go to the playstation store and find your downloaded list and i think you can just press X on it to download it again.

When my 60Gb failed it had my LBP disc inside still. It refused to stay awake long enough even to simply eject the disc. Now, if you are thinking of getting it fixed, DO NOT try to take drive apart to get your disc back. At the very least you will upset the ejection mechanism. This will probably cost you extra to be reset, as I found out. There is no way to retrieve discs from a dead old-style model's drive without upsetting something - trust me.

DLC will simply be needed to be downloaded again. Trophies will sort themselves out as well.

Yeah I tried the disc thing Holguin...didn't work

The yellow light of death can be caused by a number of problems. Sometimes its just that the PS3 gets overheated so you can just let it cool down and then it works again later. Sometimes it can happen if theres an internal problem like the fan not working or the laser disc reader not working. It can also be caused by a corrupt hardrive or a dodgey power cable.

The YLOD mostly happens in the 60GB and 80GB models I think. There have not been many reports of them happenening on the slims.

When I phoned the help line they give me the usual saying its gonna be ?131 for a refurbished model. They also said that there is currently a special 'offer' where for the same price, they'll give me a new 160GB model.

I called a local repair shop and they said that there is no permanent fix for the case of the YLOD I have - its the one where the soldering cracks on the motherboard.

Most fixes only last about 3 months at the most. The Repair shop said that they could do it for ?35 rather than sony's 'offer' of ?131 and a 3 month warranty.

So i'm going to get my PS3 fixed for ?35 so that i can get the disc out and backup my lbp data. And then I'm going to buy a slim.

Think carefully about what you're thinking of doing - by doing that, you might void the warranty. I believe you can take out your hdd without voiding the warranty (though please correct me if i am wrong), put it in a friend's ps3, and back it up that way, and still get a nice, cheap slim.

Well, fairly cheap.

You can take the HDD out without voiding the warrenty but im pretty sure that each PS3 has to format a HDD to a unique pattern or whatever that can only be recognised with the PS3 thats formated it. So if I put it in another PS3 it will have to format it - wiping all my data 2010-03-06 09:31:00

Yeah, it's true that when you put a new HDD in, the PS3 has to reformat. I had the same problem with my normal PS3, it broke, and when I moved the HDD into my new PS3 Slim - it reformatted and I lost everything. Sorry about that. Not sure there's really a way to save your data.2010-03-07 22:17:00

Hooked the HDD to a computer, though strangely it said that there was nothing on it. As I said before, it probably has something to do with the special formatting that the PS3 does to it.

Oh well...

At least ive got a oldish backup of lbp... and besides, all my games replay value just went through the roof

Holguin86, your hint doesn't always work. It didn't for me. It probably depends on the cause of the YLoD as to the time between turning PS3 on to when it turns itself off again. Mine simply didn't remain on long enough for the drive ejection system to work at all.

There are two main reasons why the older models seem to be more afflicted with YLoD:
1) Because the main processor and GPU chips are manufactured to 90 or 65nm, instead of the 45nm process used in the slim, and improved cooling systems - the older units run at a higher temperature. Therefore, thermal stresses are increased causing cracks in solder joints.
2) The older models are... older.

Hmmm I better get to my PS3 and backup me data. I'm a bit scared owning a 60GB PS3 now, especially since I live in Aus and I can get temps of up to almost 40 C.

Good to see you looking on the bright side. Hope this makes you feel better.

Sorry to hear this theamilien - I just went through the same thing. I ended up buying a new ps3 slim and plan to have my old one repaired eventually - for the backwards compatibility (80GB)

Good luck and let us know how the process goes

The PS3's HDD is logically linked to the PS3's motherboard ID number - apparently. The only two options you get when introducing a new HDD to a PS3 is 'Format HDD' or 'Turn Off PS3'. PCs will not normally be able to interpret the PS3's HDD disk filing system. This really annoys me when games such as Heavy Rain insist on copy-protecting the gamesave files.
Why??
Most gamesave files are linked to the user account anyway, so what's the point? And even for those that aren't, it doesn't exactly adversely impact PS3 or game sales.

Last week my old Fat BC 60G model PS3 suddenly suffered the same fate as the original poster
It didn't reach YLOD status [apparently that's the CPU or Graphic chip coming away from the MB], but Red flashing light which is pretty much the same thing.[Power supply failure from what I've read, there was no power going to the USB sockets when I tested so it's seems correct info]
Luckily I manager to get my FFXIII disc out before it really shut up shop.
I had bought a extended 3 year warranty on top of Sony's 1 year, so getting it fixed will cost nothing and still leave me with 15 months to go.
But I didn't have everything backed up.
Losing the data on the HD because of the mandatory HD flashing for security reasons by the Sony repair centre will hurt the most.
I think I've got some LBP game save data backed up on a USB stick, but I'm guessing all those "One -Off" costumes that I had will be lost forever now.
Anybody know if the Valentines day DLC that was at the store is still up ?, it was the one you paid for, it would be pretty dumb if they have removed it from the store and I can't replace it, especially as I've paid for it.
The thought of having to trudge my way through 60+ h of FFXIII again to get back to where I had got to doesn't appeal.
And I really don't want to think about having to download every LBP patch to bring me up to date , it's not the total file size, it's the length of time it will take to complete.

I don't know why we just can't hook our PS3's up to our PC and make a backup onto Sony's Media GO! software, like you can for the PSP.
Too simple & logical a process for Sony I guess.
Thinking I could was the reason I never bought a removable drive to backup.

Not having a PS3 for the estimated 4 weeks is driving me crazy , 2 weeks to go...Arrggh!!

As with all time-limited DLC, as long as you purchased it during its period of availability, you can download it again whenever you like.

But if it has been removed from the store [ because it was time limited] where am I to find it to download again?
Sorry I can't check the store as no PS3 atm.

Your download list can be accessed independantly of the store items by selecting the icon at the top-right of the screen.

When you purchase an item, you're purchasing the right to download that content as many times as you like, whenever you like, onto up to five PS3s simultaneously.

Obviously, it's all at Sony's discretion, and in the PlayStation Network Terms of Service they reserve the right to discontinue some or all of the PSN services at any time, but they wouldn't do that without a very good reason.
