The Colbert Report in Vancouver (with picties)

Archive: 18 posts

So I'm attending the two tapings of The Colbert Report here in Vancouver, and thought I'd share the experience with you fine folks.

It was fun, but a long wait and exhausting because of the "festival concert" setup. Too many people were treating this like it was a concert, and it got a bit ridiculous at times. The size of the crowd was absolutely obscene.

When we got there early this morning, there was a MASSIVE line. We were able to find a friend and jump in somewhat toward the front. This line wound up and down the field to science world, down and around to the sidewalk and all the way down the block. It was unbelievable. And then, out of the blue, all at once, people just started RUSHING the stage and it became a manic free-for-all. In classic Canadian fashion, nobody complained and everyone giggled airily while dealing with this unexpected change of plans.

Some highlights from the taping:

- Colbert takes at least 3 tries to get the "intro" down
- We get a sneak preview at the "Better Know a Riding" segment that will air next week, in which he asks the Indian-born member of parliament for Vancouver South what his caste is.
- Colbert discovers someone in the crowd has one of the actual Olympic relay torches, and seizes it for use in his intro.
- He LOVES chewing on his pen.
- a bald eagle actually flies around above the stage before the show starts.
- Bob Costas rides the moose.
- Buble and Colbert sing O Canada to the tune of The Star Spangled Banner.
- A completely chant-obsessed crowd. "Ca-na-da!" "Move-the-sign!" "Ride-the-moose!" Stephen: You people will chant anything! You're like a chanting horse! Crowd: "Chan-ting horse! Chant-ing horse! Chan-ting horse!"

All in all, quite entertaining. I'm really hoping I can get a better spot tomorrow, because the crowd was just obscenely ridiculous, as you'll see in these photos, and in the end you're crowding around like it's a huge concert, and it really amounts to a couple of INTERVIEWS. Pretty wacky.

Without further a-doo, photos taken by me:

Wow - very cool. But what an odd way to experience that particular brand of entertainment.

Nice pics - thanks for sharing (video for tomorrow though, right? )

Perhaps, my camera's memory card is so dainty I don't know if I'll be able to hold much video - plus the video quality of my camera is total crap.

Buu-uut... there's always yooouuu-tuuube!

Dude, I was totally there, and you can totally see me in the second last pic. Im right in the middle next to squid hat, and... lol not even gonna try.

What a great performance though eh? I thought Michael Buble did a great job of answering questions, but I thought that Bob Costas was being a bit of an ***, and that the Colbert was putting a little too much pressure on the indian Vancouverite when he asked him about his caste... he seemed pretty offended about some of the things Colbert said. But everyone had a great sense of humor and Colbert did a good job of panhandling to all us Canadians. Overall it was a really amazing performance and worth the wait for sure. I thought it was funny when everyone chanted his name "Steven! Steven!" and he said: "now in french!" and almost immediately everyone switched to "Stephan! Stephan!" Awesome!

Second day was even better than the first!

Haven't put the photos up yet, but they will come soon enough. I arrived early, still dark, around the same time as a couple of guys who had brought a massive banner that one of them painted last night after Shauni Davis won the gold for speed skating. It's just an epic banner, and a cool couple of guys. Global tv showed up and interviewed them as part of their Colbert coverage. I'm willing to bet that these guys got to meet Colbert after the show because of the thing. If I wasn't so hungry and sick of massive crowds by that time, I might have stuck with them.

Very different experience for me. When we got there we actually found a couple of friends who had been there even before we showed up (which was well before dawn). I considered staying in line for the chance to rush the front of the stage and be up front and center, or staking my claim on one of the very VERY few benches at the top of the steps just off stage right. Now, there were many hours to go before the show and I know a good thing when I see it. So the bench it was. From this vantage I was actually able to see EVERYTHING - no tippy-toed lean-arounds - and got to sit down for the whole show to boot. The only downside was my photos didn't come out good. But that's alright, someone out there in the center will have taken some epic ones.

and that the Colbert was putting a little too much pressure on the indian Vancouverite when he asked him about his caste... he seemed pretty offended about some of the things Colbert said. But everyone had a great sense of humor and Colbert did a good job of panhandling to all us Canadians.

This is one of the things I love about Colbert, that he pushes some buttons that I think should stand to be pushed. A lot of people in the audience immediately were offended and thought it was a mistake to even ask him about what "caste" he was from, just as they were when he and Buble mashed the two countries' anthems together - But part of Colbert's whole shtick is to skewer "touchy subjects" like religion and patriotism that tend to define the identity of a nation. Anytime he does it I consider him at the top of his game, and I don't doubt at all that however awkward and uncomfortable some of the interviews get, he makes proper amends. Ujjal Dosanjh showed up today onstage with Colbert briefly, and it was very clear that the two were on good terms.

It could be that some of those uncomfortable bits about the caste questioning will be cut out of the final interview, as Colbert showed us the full, uncut interview. The final show will be edited down.

Also, as to his pandering to Canadians - it's true, he's an absolute pro at it. He knows just what jokes to hit. His main jokes about Vancouver are how ridiculously "polite" everyone is. Lots of polite people jokes. Who wouldn't love him for that? And then the occasional Canadiana jab: "I've got Olympic fever! Or maybe I just had some bad poutine!" And then occasionally he'll deliberately go straight for a nerve. Someone yesterday in the crowd shouted "Where's Gretzky?!" to which Colbert replied: "Doesn't he live in LA?"

Today he interviewed a couple of men's downhill skiiers, the gold winner of the snowboard something-or-other from 2006, aaand... wow, I'm actually forgetting the other interview. Someone help me out here?

He also taped some funny ad-libbed "tosses" to himself at the studio. Apparently the shows will still be taped in the studio, and he'll toss to himself "live" in Vancouver where he does an interview. They also taped two show intros and outros.

Today's outro was absolutely epic. They wheeled the moose out to the middle of the stage, kicked on the snow machines, Colbert climbed atop, and swung a large Canadian flag while riding the moose in the artificial snow. The pride Canadians felt at this was actually touching. People laughed and cheered, but you could feel the air get a little warmer as well. These people adore this man - I mean they really, really do. And so do I, ******!

Note: Whatever photos I post here will NOT BE MINE - Mine weren't that good from the side, so I'll rely on flickr for the goods on day 2.

Did someone say "pandering"?

yes I have! I love the book, thought it was a big step up from the Daily Show's America: The Book, which was a school textbook parody. the Colbert memoir/biography, in a very self-consciously egotistical way, is the perfect lampooning of real books released by rising politicians and tv pundits.

I should point out to anyone who doesn't know, however, that, while the book has his name and face plastered on the front, in fact it was written by many of the show's writing crew. According to Wikipedia the authors of the book include:

Stephen Colbert
Rich Dahm
Paul Dinello
Allison Silverman
Michael Brumm
Eric Drysdale
Rob Dubbin
Glenn Eichler
Peter Grosz
Peter Gwinn
Jay Katsir
Laura Krafft
Frank Lesser
Tom Purcell

That's quite a list of authors for a single book, especially such a short one. but it is definitely safe to assume that Colbert is the "director" in a sense, of all this tomfoolery, as he is on his show.

Baah, no comparison. Rick Mercer's a cool dude and he can be good for a chuckle but you can't even put them beside each other. Colbert's show is a force of nature. By turning himself into a parody he created one of the most brilliant television personas of all time. There's never been anything like it and he's nothing short of a god **** American treasure. And he KNOWS it! That's the character he's created!

I just wanted to share this little NBC slide show (http://www.nbcmiami.com/news/sports/Colbert-Canada-84706502.html), it's incredibly hilarious. The Cat Fancy one is my favorite.

You know what, I've got to talk about a weird phenomenon that occurred during his show, and that's how surprisingly intoxicating his massive celebrity presence can become.

I'm as big a fan as you will ever find of Colbert and his show. I always laugh a bit at the shouts of "I love you Stephen!" - of course you love him, and so do I, and so do we all, but I can't imagine the urge to just shout this at him.

When he was there in person, and especially after a wait of nearly 5 hours, there's an intoxication that happens. People who would normally not shout such things become compelled to do it - they see him there on stage, and it's really him, and everyone loves him, and everyone is pouring their adoration out, and people just begin shouting, because they don't know what else to do: "I love you Stephen!"
The stock Colbert response to this - because he gets it A LOT - is "I love me too!"

But it's just interesting to me how suddenly and surprisingly inebriating his presence can become. In person, one can easily become drunk off of Colbert's Colbert-ness, and lose one's inhibitions. You may remain composed and collected, but some part of you inside just wants to shout your love at him.

You're not likely to see any other situation in which such a massive, adoring crowd will show up in a party concert festival atmosphere in order to watch what essentially amounts to a small handful of interviews.
