[Cancelled] The Misadventures of The Odd Gentleman

Developer Diary

Hello everyone :hero:

I don't really know if I'm on the correct forum, it was a project, but it's been frozen since... um, yesterday

So, let's begin at the beginning. Few weeks ago, I started working on a new project, supposed to open into a whole series. This idea came after watching a The Simpsons episode : the thirteenth episode of the twentieth season, Gone Maggie Gone :

- After going out with Maggie to buy some items, Homer has a car accident and has to leave Maggie onto the doorstep of a convent. The nuns take her with them and refuse to give her back. Lisa tries to infiltrate the Monastery and to bring Maggie. She discovers a series of messages that could lead to the legendary diamond.

The riddles and the puzzles of this episode made a big impression on me. The anagrams, cryptogram, the secret messages, etc...

So I decided to get inspired by this episode to make a LBP level (not based on it, there was gonna be many differences). Here is the plot :

- In wartime, seeing his husband walking away to go to war and two of her three children passing away gradually, the hero notices fearfully that her daughter get kidnapped. According to some neighbours, a nun would have abducted the little girl. The tearful mother is going to infiltrate a church from London, passing herself off as a nun.

I decided to keep the names Lisa and Maggie since they were used in anagrams in the episode, that I wanted to use in my level.

It was supposed to be a series, so I had the intention of going on with something more fanciful, much like The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.

The hero goes to meet a magical wardrobes merchant who is going to help her travel through time and worlds to find her daughter, who mustn't have stayed in the church.

This was gonna make it possible to vary the atmospheres in the whole series, so I don't get tired of making the same kind of level each and every single day. It's important for me.

So, I had thought about different titles :

Mrs. Windpaper and the Steam Wardrobe Merchant
The Book Merchant's Travelling Library
The Wayfarer and the Plump Merchant
Windpaper's Clockwork Bells
The Clockwork Stone
The Bell’s Tale

Yeah, you can notice words like Stone, Bell, or even The Travelling Library , because I had been giving it a lot of thought before finding the perfect magical gate. I finally came up with the Steam Wardrobe Merchant , reminding me of Jules Vernes' The Steam House .

Mrs. Windpaper was supposed to be the hero's name, Lisa Windpaper. So, I had started working on promotional pictures :arg:

(To see the French version : http://img695.imageshack.us/img695/5026/publbp2merchantfranais.jpg )

However, later, I decided to change the main character to make something more... crazy

It's not the weeping mother acting anymore, it's the grandpa' ! More ironic , more satirical, zanier. He was gonna make discreet inquiries to find his granddaughter passing himself off as, not a nun, but a priest.

So I renamed my series The Misadventures of The Odd Gentleman.

Here are the new pictures I made :

Everything was moving on. Although, not long ago, I suddenly wanted to add a train No problem, no worries about the story, the grandpa' could go to the church by train.

I started making my train, taking my inspiration from...well, a-certain-game

I made it a bit destroyed, since the train was supposed to have crashed and to be hanging. The course would have been quite vertical. That was a funny idea ! The gamer would have had to catch objects and luggage to go up.

Finally, I changed my mind. Instead of making a destroyed train inspired by another game , I simply decided to make a level based on this game (the train isn't gonna be destroyed), that is itself based on a famous series of novels.

But I won't tell you more on this project

Maybe I'll keep working on my first idea later, who knows ? I used to be bowled over at the beginning.

Just, that idea of time travel could make it possible to diversify my levels inside my series, so I don't get tired and give it up.

I had had a similar problem after one of my level, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.
After much thought, I wanted to add a city in the Sky, with balloons, in the second Tom Sawyer level.

That was my current stuff , the thing that I was being keen on. But that didn't fit Tom Sawyer series at all... So I gave this series up to think about my SkyTown idea.

I don't wanna let it happen again If an idea off the subject goes through my head, there ain't gonna be any way to fit it in th level (accuracy of the original work ) .

I hope I won't face similar problems anymore.

Another annoying stuff : I had made an introduction for my project, The Misadventures of the Odd Gentleman .
I had made it to get rid of all the text bubbles, so that the gamer wouldn't have been annoyed with too many text bubbles in a single level, the Chapter 1.

Inside my introduction, Sackboy was hidden behind sceneries, there were five. A series of text bubbles went with each scenery, they told the story gradually.

Everything was up, I had made stunning sceneries (Yeah, I've lost my synonyms dictionary ) , narration bubbles, a choice of language at the beginning, and a great scoreboard, as a church entrance.

Some of my friends could play it, I was happy, everyone's found it beautiful.

Anyway, this introduction is just unusable for my new level (based on a game itself based on a series of novels, just let me remind you of this ) , its sceneries don't fit my prelude.

If the opportunity arises, I'd be glad to publish this intro' and to keep working on The Misadventures of The Odd Gentleman.

Since I think I can send some things from the Chapter 1 of The Misadventures of The Odd Gentleman on a refresher course and still use them, I won't send pictures I started working on the train after making many other things...

However, as I said earlier, the introduction is unusable so I'll publish some pictures here everyday :arg:

Screenshots, ideas of logos, patch. etc...

So, let's start !

Second shot of my introduction (the first one being the choice of language) :

Thanks Dante ^^ I simply used Photoshop, but you know, I didn't draw this. I just line items up. Downloaded the London map, downloaded the booknote, ... I don't know Keynote at all, does it make it possible to model things ? I'd love to see your work, I'll search !

By the way, I'm gonna sum it up for people not being English :

I used to work on a project inspired by a Simpson episode. I made a whole introduction and I started working on the Chapter 1.

I finally decided to cancel it, but I'll use some parts of the Chapter 1 for my brand new project !

However, the introduction is unusable so I'll be posting screenshots and some other pictures here to show my work

Yeah, I should buy FF8 too But I've been told it's really choppy on HD screen

Um by the way, unfortunately, this project was cancelled, so I don't think you'll ever play it  That's why I'm posting screenshots, just to show my work and not let it rot in my Moon :arg:

I cancelled it to work on another project, based on a game, which is based on a famous series of novels, but I want it to be a kinda surprise :hero:

Some patchs I worked on.Yep, The Series That Never Was, that was one of the titles I came up with. I would've changed the word Series by another word each time.

Bonus :arg:
