Rogue Labs Level Review Service

Archive: 20 posts

Hello, and welcome to Rogue Labs! i see you've selected our level review service, i hope it works well for you! Rules:

* No horror, zombie, or other disturbing type levels.
* I will accept up to 5 levels (one per person per batch) into a queue and subsequently review them at a rate of at least once per week.
* Please provide a thread for your level in your post, or failing that a PSN and level name.

In exchange, you'll get a detailed review about what i like and dislike in the level, what i found easy and hard about it, what i felt could use more work, and any other necessary feedback. I'll post this review both here and in the relevant thread for it, if applicable.

The Pollo Chronicles: The Crazy Pollo by Racroz/Eprim

Please note that as i have no audio systems for the PS3at present, i will not be providing a review on the sound or music aspect of this level.

Started out, come into an fairly well decorated hall. The story is certainly not for small children, but slightly intriguing. A pretty good starting platforming section, though when entering it i died; maybe it was just me? Opened the gate, i like that you used a custom built switch! Go through the town, nice looking buildings. Only thing i i noticed is that the cardboard packing crates are a little dull; perhaps they could be spruced up a little? Interesting section, not often you see a sewer used as an obstacle. I had a little trouble getting onto the house just before the spout, had something to do with the terrain in that area. Went into the forest (nothing too remarkable about the visuals here, maybe add some decorations), explored the area and pulled down the thing. I didn't see the alcove i was to shove it into, so i was puzzled for a while with it sitting right in front of said alcove. I rather liked the tilt puzzle, those things are fun! Continue on, see it fade to night, Good lighting effects achieved with those LEDs. I noticed the rock was plain in a lot of places, adding some more stickers and stuff would be good. Hop across the platforms and swing across the swingies, then enter the "castle". Well styled here, good visuals (though i might change the electric barriers to fire). I also like the puzzle! Go through, good burnt section, and i like the timed explosives, nice change from regular ones. Fairly unremarkable section, the bandit castle is (as with other sections, needs more decoration!), though i do want to note that i had a lot of trouble operating the story dispenser thing, i'd recommend you do some sort of automatically timed system.

Overall: 3.85 stars
Visuals: 4 stars (could use some work in the places i noted, but a very very good start)
Gameplay: 3.5 stars (one or two interesting things but a lot of "standard" mechanics that didn't really grab me; Experiment with stuff!)
Story: 4 stars (i'm not big on villains especially when i play one, but it sounds like an interesting start)

Note, you will need to play the introduction first, plus the finale is in a separate level... I hope ur up for a challenge!

You could find yourself playing this level for well over 1 hour. If u start to get frustrated and stuck here is the link to the Level Showcase which includes the walk-through:

You're welcome, i actually tried it once but since i couldn't get through the real myst i'll probably have to use your walkthrough.

All slots are full, until i review another level no further requests are accepted, sorry.

The Drowned Dungeon by bonner123

I enter the level and see a nicely decorated pool with neat spinning wheels (though the music, if you can call it that, needs a lot of work; there's this obnoxious gurgling sound...). i hop up to the platform, pull the switch and.... what happened? might want a cutscene here. Anyway, it seems that it rose the water. It's a (very) minor annoyance that i have to use the lift again to get the checkpoint, but still an annoyance. I really like this style with all of the wooden spinning wheels and stuff, and that box is cute! Flipped the switch, then it took me a minute to get going on the path. Maybe make the platform you need to hop on a little longer? I went across and up, and i got squished by the bringing down the stairs. Was that intended? I went up the stairs and across, and... the sponge makes a gross squishy sound when grabbing it. Anyway, used the two sponges, and fell down. Hit the button and progressed through the obstacle, the music is much nicer here. I really liked the switch next to the wheel part, that was a really fun mechanic. Surely you can make your own enemies now? it would be so much better... The wheels thing was very cool, though complicated by two players. Continue on past some nice obstacles, and come to a Jamu-Jamu sticker switch. I wonder what it is? The cutscene button alcove needs a light, it was very hard to see the button... More good obstacles, but the electric cylinders were quite hard (probably due to 2 players in the party). It was quite dark after the water rose, and after it did it took us some time to figure out where to go. Also, can the circle which you push out of your way next to the water level switch just before the checkpoint be turned grabbable? (it was hard to move it) Now, continuing on, the blocks with switches on them seem absolutely pointless; we just used one as a stepping tone then carried on. Ah, they're used later on in the level. One thing though: your water is *very* dark making it hard to see what to do. Perhaps add water-switched LEDs to your level? Aaaaand thats it. We scoured the area but could not figure out what to do. I had to quit, and it was such a good level up to that point.

Overall: 3 stars
Sound: 3.5 stars (really should work on the start and one or two sounds, but other than that it's good)
Gameplay: 4 stars (great right up to the point i got stuck)
Visuals: 4 stars (very good style)

One slot is available, step right up!

There is an indent in the floor, leading to the second puzzle you need to solve to open the door. Sorry you couldn't complete it. The water is reasonably bright on my TV so I would adjust the gamma on yours, via the Display settings on LBP. Oh, and you can move away from the stairs before they crush you Thanks. I'll remove the annoying sounds. I'd appreciate if you tried it again, not for a review but to simply finish because you only finished 60% :O lol

Oh, seeing as there is a slot available, could I request a review of my level The City in the Sky (Visual Remake), keep in mind it's visual based. Thanks in advance.

Yeee... sorry about that sheb, Bonner grabbed it right away.

@Bonner: i'll retry it, but i do rather think the water is quite dark. If you mean the small path leading down to a spinning wheel and an blockable but path, i went there and looked all over the area but couldn't find anything else to do. I have another screen that i'll try, but all other level's ive played look fine and i'd rather not have to adjust my gamma to play one level.

@Evanesced: the only reason it got 3 stars was because i couldn't finish the level nor even figure out where to go, i'll be more than happy to rate it 4 or 5 stars, it's clear ti was a quality level other than the few minor points i mentioned. I do believe that i deserve a little better than that as well for taking the time out to do a detailed review of the level, and for agreeing to re-review the part of the level at the same time accepting another review item.

Review update:
Ok, on this other monitor i was able to see what to do. TBH, all it needs there is a singular solitary light highlighting where the buttons are that we need to hit; if I could make that mistake others could too! A spectacularly solid level which i rated 5 stars and hearted, though i did notice what seemed to be a couple of bugs:
One of the soldiers was "hovering" in mid-air, was this intended?
I set off the lift going to the Orange then fell off, this should probably be fixed.

M306 Trash Drop by shebhnt

I open to what is apparently my dad telling me about the trash (the room could use a little more work but it's a great start; i'd recommend that you change the surrounding material from cardboard to something else), then go down the "stairs (really an elevator, might want to wither actually make it stairs or change the dialogue), walk right through the rock(???) to the arena. A basic but effective and pretty fun dodging game, though i'd have to wonder why your dad is throwing spiked, electrified, and flaming trash at you...

4 stars, no tag/heart. Basically, improve the look and you've got a great survival!

Overall: 4 stars
Gameplay: 4.5 stars
Visuals: 3 stars
Sound: 4 stars (only thing i can think of would be to add some sort of squishy sound when the trash drops to the ground)

A slot is now open! step right up for the slot!
