Meanings of lyrics in songs

Archive: 27 posts

Usually you don't even think about what the lyrics mean, and even if you listen to them you get the meaning of them only if you read the lyrics from somewhere, at least this is the case for me.

So, post lyrics to a song here, you can even point out some parts that have a good meaning behind them if you want.
A link to youtube or somewhere with the song would also be nice...
It doesn't even have to be in English, but be sure to post a translation so that everyone would understand them.

So, hope this makes you think more about the lyrics in songs that you hear. And please, no "Daft Punk - Around the World", at least attempt to take this seriously...

Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world

Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world

Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world

Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world

Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world

Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world

Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world

Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world

Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world

Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world

Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world

Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world

Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world

Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world

Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world

Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world

Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world

Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world
Around the world, around the world

So, I think I'll start with a song that I have loved ever since when I heard it, it's in Finnish so I'll have the translation here.

Pariisin Kev?t - Meteoriitti (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r55ff5MFN30)
(Spring in Paris - Meteorite)

Seitsem?n sekuntia aikaa katua sun tekoja,
kauheimmat jutut s? voit j?tt?? kertomatta,

Olisitko haavoittumattomana onnellinen,
vai pakahtuisitko s? kenties ik?v?st?.

Min? en unohda sinua koskaan,
vaikka en muistaisi omaa nime?ni.
Sin? saatat olla yksi noista ohikulkijoista,
joka sylk?isee vasten kasvojani.

Min? en unohda sinua koskaan,
vaikka en muistaisi omaa nime?ni.
Sin? saatat olla juuri se,
joka sattumalta minut pelastaa meteoriitin alta.

Min? en unohda sinua koskaan,
vaikka en muistaisi omaa nime?ni.
Sin? saatat olla yksi noista ohikulkijoista,
joka sylk?isee vasten kasvojani.

Min? en unohda sinua koskaan,
vaikka en muistaisi omaa nime?ni.
Sin? saatat olla juuri se,
joka sattumalta minut pelastaa meteoriitin alta.

Sin? saatat olla juuri se,
joka sattumalta minut pelastaa meteoriitin alta.
Sin? saatat olla juuri se,
joka sattumalta minut pelastaa meteoriitin alta.

Seven seconds to repent your deeds
You can leave the worst parts out
What if a meteorite should drop to your head
before you have had the time to say the most important words?

I will never forget you,
Even if I wouldn't remember my own name
You might just be the one
who accidentally saves me from under the meteorite

If you could pass the foray,
or if you were made of armored steel,
would you be happy being invulnerable,
or would you possibly burst in drabness?

I will never forget you,
Even if I wouldn't remember my own name
You might be one of those passers-by
who spits against my face

I will never forget you,
Even if I wouldn't remember my own name
You might just be the one
who accidentally saves me from under the meteorite

I will never forget you,
Even if I wouldn't remember my own name
You might be one of those passers-by
who spits against my face

I will never forget you,
Even if I wouldn't remember my own name
You might just be the one
who accidentally saves me from under the meteorite

You might just be the one
who accidentally saves me from under the meteorite
You might just be the one
who accidentally saves me from under the meteorite

I put the part in red that made me think quite a bit.
So hope you like this song and continue to post your own favourite songs and of course lyrics to them.

Nobody knows my true identity.
For all we know I?m John F. Kennedy?s
Love child with Nosferatu.
We can?t know, but still we got to.
Nobody knows how deep this mystery goes,
But ancient caveman history shows:
We?re all descended from the same evil alien slime.
And it's a pretty shade of gray.
It makes the woodwork eat away.
Glass breaks and cow?s milk curdles.
It glows in the dark and it mutates turtles.

Somebody told me something interesting.
They told me the world is always tempesting
Round and around again.
I've had enough of that pseudo-Zen.
Somebody else was watching from afar,
Screwing it up like a broken VCR.
She thought that I was very insincere, because
I rolled my eyes a bit too much.
Am I really that out of touch?
Why should I care about this?
I?m not concerned with the things I miss.

I don't see the point in not believing in
Things you can taste like fear and cinnamon.
Sadly this hasn?t gotten me
Anything but dread and gluttony.
Under the ground is where I wanna go.
Surely there is a way, but I dunno
How to get there.
No one seems to know, actually, so
I tried to use a garden spade,
But it was very poorly made.
It broke into so many pieces.
It's times like these that I wish I had
Telekinesis?
Telekinesis?
Telekinesis?
Telekinesis?
Telekinesis?
Telekinesis?
Telekinesis?
Telekinesis?

Slipknot- All Hope Is Gone

You won't like the actual song if you aren't a fan of nu-metal/ death metal, but here are the lyrics:

The state of the nation, violation
A broken promise is as good as a lie
The hell is humongous, the devil's among us
And we will burn because we won't unite

We won't witness anymore freedom
What does anybody do we need 'em?
I would rather fight than let another die
We're the problem but we're also the solution

All hope is gone

If you want you cannot take it from me
If you think you can you still don't know me
Let me tell you, when I said it I meant it
And I will always have the right to defend it

Fifty seconds, a hundred murders
The bill of rights is a bill of sale
What will you do when the war is over?
What will you do when your system fails?

We have made the present, obsolete
What do you want? What do you need?
We'll find a way when all hope is gone
We've seen the fall of the elite
Bury your life, sink your disease
We'll end the world when all hope is gone

We have made the present, obsolete
What do you want? What do you need?
We'll find a way when all hope is gone
We've seen the fall of the elite
Bury your life, sink your disease
We'll end the world when all hope is gone

The wretched are the wounded
The hungry starved to death
At a place where no-one goes
The air itself is a final breath

So discontinue
The antiseptic cash charade
As the cry of justice comes
I'm gonna let this fire free

I am the reason your future suffers
I am the hatred you won't embrace
I am the worm of a pure distinction
I am the remedy, spit in my face

All your lies and wars are out-dated
All your subjects are dulling mind games
I can let all of another million reasons why
But doesn't matter when the only thing will never die

We have made the present, obsolete
What do you want? What do you need?
We'll find a way when all hope is gone
We've seen the fall of the elite
Bury your life, sink your disease
We'll end the world when all hope is gone

We have made the present, obsolete
What do you want? What do you need?
We'll find a way (we'll find a way) when all hope is gone
We've seen the fall of the elite
Bury your life, sink your disease
We'll end the world (we'll end the world) when all hope is gone

When all hope is gone
When all hope is gone
When all hope is gone

The whole thing is important and I think it's quite a strong message.

'I pray by the grace of god that there's somebody listening'
'Give me another chance tonight'
'I don't really want to die'

And the last recorded vocals of the Rev:

'I know you'll find your own way when i'm not with you'

That was a week before he died. All those lyrics were by him, about dying early etc.

What does that mean then? Seeing as they are all true.

Yeah I agree with S-A-S--G-U-N-R. I am a metal fan, and that song is depressing even with all the other emo and "I hate my life' lyrics.2010-02-21 21:04:00

I've been listening to mostly instrumental stuff recently, but I still often listen to my favorite band EVAR, Tool. I never can understand what their songs are about, though. My guess, though, would be that the majority of Tool's songs are about getting or being really really high.2010-02-22 02:06:00

I write lyrics and poetry almost everyday and have for close to 20 years, so I'm all about interpretation and reinterpretation of lyrics... whether it's content, structure, or style.

Nice... that's a reason I like the lyrics to this song -

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gXWkksacWWI

The 2nd verse, by Poetic of the Gravediggaz, was recorded a few weeks before he died of stomach cancer. He only died, since as a semi-underground artist, he had no health coverage of any kind.

"Paralyzed on the bathroom floor by pain
Last month I endured, but now I can't ignore
Feels like railroad spikes being stuck in my liver
Am I dying? Eyes crying, body starting to shiver
Crawl upstair from the basement calling my sister
God help me, I ain't feeling too healthy
Stomach walls burning, head spinning and turning
Waiting for the EMS; 3:10 in the morning
Rush me to the emergency screaming like a newborn
The pain's too strong maybe my soul's trying to move on
They hook me to the I.V., put me through some X-Rays
Gave me Demerol to kill the pain that was the next phase
Early the next day in the hospital room
Moms and pops in the room, three or four docs in the room
Test results suggest your colon and your liver
Is so cancerous you got three months left
Me and Death is playing chess ever since then
My strength is the most high, my fam and close friends
The Last Emp then set free, blessed me with a verse
Staying healthy comes first
Look at me things could be worse"

Yarbone, let's face it, a lot of songs would be way better without lyrics. Especially in metal. Maybe if most metal artists weren't such cheesy lyricists....

There are many songs that touch me lyrically.. quite incredible words to be honest.

..on the other side of the coin, having played guitar in a heavy metal rock band for a number of years, I used to joke on stage with the lead singer in between songs. Sometimes it ended up being like a rock show/comedy routine.

Sorry to go off topic, but this reminds me of one I hit him with after he was making fun of himself in botching a few of the lyrics in something..

"Lyrics? What lyrics!?! I just hear guitar riffs!" ..and did a few crazy wicked licks as my own 'rim shot'.

Well.. it was funny to me.

I know that my girlfriend never listens to the lyrics of songs. She thought Bleeding Love by Leona Lewis was a love song, and she also likes System of a Down for the line "Everybody's going to the desert have a real good time." She doesn't have an opinion on the war.2010-02-26 05:20:00

Take special note of the Lyrics in red
They can't stop us
Let 'em try
For heavy metal
We will die!

Quit my job this morning said forever
I would hold my head up high
Cause I need metal in my life
Just like an eagle needs to fly

So I walked outside into the street
From a hall I heard thunder and screams
I walked inside so I could hear
And the guy beside me gave me a beer

He had his fist up in the air
And called me brother said my friends
Are over there

They call themselves immortals
They're the truest of the true
And in that very moment
I was born again like you

They said hold your head up high
Raise your fist up in the air
Play metal louder than hell
Louder than hell

They can't stop us
Let 'em try
For heavy metal
We would die!

Brothers stand beside me, there's a battle on
Know my words are true
There's a battle for true metal
They're marching; they're marching on
Me and you

Ten thousand strong are here tonight
With twenty thousand fists up in the air
The power of true metal's calling you
It's everywhere

Hold your head up high
Raise your fist up in the air
Play metal louder than hell
Louder than hell

They can't stop us
Let 'em try
For heavy metal
We would die!
And I'm a fan of metal.

One of the bands with best meaning in their lyrics is Tool, no doubt.

I've been listening to mostly instrumental stuff recently, but I still often listen to my favorite band EVAR, Tool. I never can understand what their songs are about, though. My guess, though, would be that the majority of Tool's songs are about getting or being really really high.

No, not really. Tool does use drugs as a way of displaying other important issues, though.

For example, The Pot. As soon as you here that song title, you think about marijuana. Then you hear the chorus; "You musta been HIGHHHHH!" But in fact the song is about hypocrisy. The phrase where the Pot calls the Kettle black comes to mind. Also...

"Who are you to wave your finger? So full of it."

The song is mostly about how people hypocritically judge stoners although they are just as worthless. Meyep, Tool = God. Or more specifically, Maynard = God.

Some of their songs are much easier to interpret, though. One example can be Vicarious, which is a super super super awesome song.

Eye on the TV
'cause tragedy thrills me
Whatever flavor it happens to be

Like:
"Killed by the husband" ...
"Drowned by the ocean" ...
"Shot by his own son" ...
"She used a poison in his tea,
Then (she) kissed him goodbye"
That's my kind of story
It's no fun til someone dies.

Don't look me at like I am a monster
Frown out your one face, but with the other (you)
Stare like a junkie into the TV
Stare like a zombie while the mother holds her child,
Watches him die,
Hands to the sky cryin "why, oh why?"

Cause I need to watch things die from a distance
Vicariously, I live while the whole world dies
You all need it too - don't lie.

Why can't we just admit it?
Why can't we just admit it?
We won't give pause until the blood is flowin'
Neither the brave nor bold
Nor brightest of stories told
We won't give pause until the blood is flowin'

I need to watch things die from a good safe distance
Vicariously, I live while the whole world dies
You all feel the same so why can't we just admit it?

Blood like rain fallin' down
Drum on grave and ground

Part vampire, part warrior,
Carnivore and voyeur
Stare at the transmittal.
Sing to the death rattle.

La, la, la, la, la, la, la-lie (x4)

Credulous at best
Your desire to believe in
Angels in the hearts of men.
But pull your head on out (of) your hippie haze
And give a listen
Shouldn't have to say it all again

The universe is hostile
So impersonal
Devour to survive
So it is, so it's always been ...

We all feed on tragedy.
It's like blood to a vampire.

Vicariously, I live while the whole world dies
Much better you than I.

The song is pretty easy to interpret, but is genius none-the-less.

Descent - Tides of Man (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=skabiS449Ew)

A very creative song, here are the lyrics. Try to find out what's so amazing about it.

The Descent from Destiny
By a Dark Deed Done
Was Disclosed in Divination
Death of a Dead man's son
Deranged, Deprived Delivery
Darkened his Decor

Ever-loathesome, the Executor's Edict
Estranges he from himself
Evermore

So Soon the Service
Sealed his fated Strife
A Sacrifice Seduced
To Save his threatened life

And Cowardace nor Commerce
Could Call the Child to Cease
Thought the Cycle of Criminal Commissions
Could never Co-exist with peace
He Could Count only
On the Combustion of his Chamber
As he lay the Child to the floor

Ever-loathesome, the Executor's Edict
Estranges he from himself
Evermore

Never to Neglect this Night again
As Naught for Nuances extend
Nocuously Numbing him into Nullification

Terribly Taken by The Task That Transpired
Tonight a Tantalizing new Testament was acquired
Thundering upon his tormented heart
From Temptation and Treachery
His almighty Teachings Tore him apart

Dan Deacon - Wham City has a very though provoking meaning.

Lyrics:
"There is a mountain of snow, up past the big glen
We have a castle enclosed, there is a fountain
Out of the fountain flows gold, into a huge hand
That hand is held by a bear who had a sick band

Of ghosts and cats
And pigs and bats
With brooms and bats
And wigs and rats
And play big dogs like queens and kings
And everyone plays drums and sings

About big sharks
Sharp swords
Beast bees
Bead lords
Sweet cakes
Mace lakes

O ma ma ma ma ma ma ma ma"

After that it talks about the end of humanity. lol

I hope in my heart that we on a whole
Will die and the earth be left alone
Just beast and bee and fish and tree
This hope I wish will someday be
That bacteria will have ate our remains
That all knowledge of us has decayed
Our burden raised the world set free
The earth returns to land and sea
Our buildings burned and highways gone
I love my friends and everyone
but we've had our chance let's move aside
let time wash us out with the tide

That is a really creative song.
For a while there I didn't pick it but the first letter of most of the words in each verse spell descent. Ok so that sounds like jibberish but you get what I mean.

The alliteration is what makes it so great... I love it, and that's a technique I employ ALOT in my writing, and many people rarely recognize it, because the hip-hop scene doesn't have many fans who really break down the quality of the lyrics in a literary way, just if they like them or not. I think it's what makes my style really unique.

Check this song of mine out, for successive use of the letter "F" and the word "for/four"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kMjoC_0WU_c

The lyrics scroll by on the video. It's an extension of a concept song by Jay-Z called "22 Two's" and a Canibus song called "33 Threes" that I wrote in 2001.

...and back in the day, friends and I would "battle" each other by spelling out our names down the side of our verses, or our opponent's.
