"This Shape Is Too Complicated" Help

Archive: 11 posts

I am making a level with a labrynth of tunnels going through sponge. When the "Too Complicated" message comes up, I am unable to do anything to fix it. How can I make tunnels without getting this stupid message? 2010-02-15 23:57:00

Try doing them in sections as well as using the corner editor to create your tunnels as this will help avoid this message.2010-02-16 00:11:00

If you can cut back on a few corners with the corner editing tool, you'll be golden. Otherwise, you'll need to find a way to reduce the corners in the object... and that basically ammounts to cutting the object in two. You won't be able to drag the cutting tool through the object (as this creates more vertices), but creating a long piece of material, and copying it onto your tunnel, so the object is neatly divided will help.2010-02-16 03:10:00

"This Shape Is Too Complicated"

This means that the object has too many sides, say you make a square, the game can handle it, but if you make a 500 sided circle or something, you'll get this message. You just need to simply remove how many sides there are, you can easily delete sides with the corner editor tool.

Couldn't you also make a ridiculously small piece of material and just cut away? I mean, I know it's usually a bad idea, but if the cutting tool won't work..

I usally just get a square of a material, make it as small as possible, and run it through the shape to cut it in two. BTW, does anybody have nay idea how many vertices a shape can handle, if no, it might be time to do some testing....2010-02-16 09:03:00

They are saying how to fix it… because they obviously cant edit it to cut back on a few corners. That happens when a shape is really complex, you cant even move or delete existing corners.

This happened with a friend… the way we fixed it was to change it to a soft material, then blow through it with bombs. You still have to be careful though, it can also get complex with bomb holes.
You can make something to help with that. Pause the game, place an explosive and put an inverted switch on it. Then capture it.
Every time you place this bomb you just made, itll blow up straight away… you can make some nice clean holes this way.

Then yeah just do what every one else said… make it in multiple sections.

Hope that helps, good luck

Burnvictim already posted the proper procedure. If you can still cut into it with a small square shape, then do that. If you can't (if you ignore the complicated warning until you fully max out the vertices, it won't let you cut into it because that could create two more vertices) then you make a long strip of material: long enough to make it all the way through the object, so it won't add any vertices while you're cutting, click L3 to copy the long thin block, position it so that it neatly divides your complicated object, then click triangle to cut the line. Should work just find and it's less messy than bombing.

If, for some reason, you can't do that, then the bombing method should still work, but it's a problematic and messy solution.

The "cutting it with another material" solution cannot fail actually. So don't worry.2010-02-16 17:49:00

Something i do when this happens is cut the shape in half and then glue it together.2010-02-17 16:26:00
