*CROWN WINNING* Arena of the Gladiators [2P only / pvp]
Archive: 40 posts
Arena of the Gladiators [2P only / pvp]TheAdipose The greatest thrill in gaming comes from vanquishing a friend. Adi and Luos provide the Arena, you provide the gladiators. This level is for 2 players ONLY - and contains 6 frantic challenges for you to compete against your friends in. Dare you enter the Arena of the Gladiators? http://fc08.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2010/046/c/7/c7527e69d67f3c3aeca10509d278c13c.jpg ** Video trailer ** (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZKtWZZPlLI) <<<--- click here to watch the 2 min video trailer!! Level highlights with some excellent music to get you in the mood for competition!! This level started because I was sick of playing 'races' that weren't actually competitive and just involved holding down an accelerate button. It is the result of about a months hard work. It is VERY different from 'in pursuit of the meddling magpie' - but we didnt want to pigeon hole ourselves into a genre. In this level we have created SIX very competitive, very fast, very fun events. They are all designed for 2 players and won't work for 1, 3 or 4 players so please don't try Several of these games use a splitscreen gameplay while the players compete. Whilst im sure I'm not the first to try this - I havent seen it before - so hopefully this will feel pretty original to you guys. Luos has created a fantastic animated character for this level. It works having 6 pre-set body positions and by using rtm's de-emitters, it can flip between them with ease - definately worth checking out! the character can move his neck, arms, waist - and even his fingers and biceps! A video tutorial showing character creation to accompany this level will be released this week. Adi's credits. Thanks to... Clarie- for making everyday fun (awww), luos - for all the time he spends putting up with me, comph for his patient help with a few logic issues, rtm for his de-emitters, Sync + fred + judy + morgana + MrsSB + many others for helping us test and providing useful feedback. LET THE GAMES BEGIN! Adi and Luos. | 2010-02-15 19:36:00 Author: TheAdipose Posts: 533 |
OK here we go! I have played this with luos and with Adi and thought it was great fun. (I haven't played it since you posted it so if you guys changed something please let me know) The Character who guides you through is very well done and is very cool to see in between each challenge. I love how he changes as you progress. As for the challenges themselves: I thought they are very well done. Interesting and challenging without being too hard. (unless your playing with the people who created them and then you just might as well give up! I thought the layout was well done as well. I am eager to try this with someone who hasn't played so I can see if I can win one! (but then I am the one who has done it before and I'll feel like I'm cheating...naw...I have no memory so who ever I play with wont be penalized) LOL Great level and nice challenge. Will rate it 5 Stars and Heart it with a Puzzler tag | 2010-02-15 19:53:00 Author: AJnKnox Posts: 518 |
This level started out with almost all chalenges worked out within a week or so.. I redid the visuals three times, and because we had to optimise logic near extremes we had to put more time into this level than we actually wanted. but I am really happy with the results, and I will take any of you on any day of the week! (in the level!! not irl!!) Also thanks to Robocrash for playing trough the level with me, same goes for TheGide as he helped me to optimise the logic for a few hours. Also many thanks to all other people who helped me to test and review this level!! I can finally work on Sack 5, and the new level me and adi want to create. | 2010-02-15 19:54:00 Author: Luos_83 Posts: 2136 |

To accompany this level we have released a video tutorial exploring the 3D layer glitch 3D glitch video tutorial (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=22765-How-to-use-the-3D-layer-glitch-video-tutorial!) We should have a second tutorial based on character creation up in the next couple of days. | 2010-02-16 19:52:00 Author: TheAdipose Posts: 533 |
Yay! I got thanked for helping with the level (testing and making those 2-3 switches invisible.. heh)! This level was very fun and I want to see more! | 2010-02-16 21:15:00 Author: RobotCrash Posts: 121 |
Yay! I got mentioned. I hope you had loads of fun recreatings 40-60 mins of work because of me and my foolishness. The level is great, and I'll rate it 5 star and heart it as soon as I'll play it | 2010-02-16 21:22:00 Author: Fredrik94 Posts: 342 |
I have played this a few times with Adi and Morgana and it was tons of fun go red team!! lol I was one of the many other testers lol yay. | 2010-02-16 23:27:00 Author: Xeno_Destroyer Posts: 72 |
I managed to find a friend to play LBP with and headed straight to this level to give it a go. I really liked the variety of the challenges and how most of the time it wasn't always the same person winning (well actually it was.. but I play too much lbp ) but the different challenges favoured different people. I also loved how the team names stayed the same on all of the banners without having to sticker them again - very cool. Just overall had a lot of fun playing and competing throughout the level, so very little wrong with it. What I would say though is that it's not nice being the red team and getting boo'ed every time I had to switch half way through with my friend because she didn't like being booed... so yeah, maybe switch it up so different people get cheered each time? As I said though, a great level - 5 stars and a heart | 2010-02-16 23:41:00 Author: Coxy224 Posts: 2645 |
I thought it was awesome. I enjoyed it in the testing phase and it's even better (obviously) in its completed form. A couple of quibbles though. In the maze with the doors that open/close, it seems like blue has a bit of an advantage since he's standing on the ground and running under a door, while red has to jump up to the level with the door and go over it: red seems to have a narrower window of opportunity to make that gate. I noticed it during testing but forgot to mention it, and then my nephew and I both had problems with it (we played, then switched colors). Maybe make it so the red door goes up instead of down, and/or move them a bit further from the edge so that red has more room to stand while waiting for the door to move. The other quibble I have, I mentioned in the comment section of the level, but I'll repeat it here. It seems like the gondola segment is weighted more than it should be. On our second play-through, I trounced my nephew on almost every race (I won a couple by a pretty big margin 10+ seconds) and I'm pretty sure I won the others too, but not by such a big margin. I also lasted quite a bit longer in the survival race. He ultimately won the game, though, because I got stuck in the wrong end of the gondola for about 5-6 seconds (wasn't expecting him to be able to slap me so hard: I guess the gondola was moving pretty fast). It was good 'cuz he's a kid and I probably shoulda' let him win anyway, but it seemed a bit unfair after I did so well at all the other events. Not really sure how to fix this one, except to maybe slow down the bubble emitter so there's not quite so many points at stake or make the segment run a bit longer so there's more time to recoup a quick mistake (those are a bit contradictory: making it longer would increase the points at stake; I think the first option would be better). Other than that, I loved it. More people should make legitimate two player levels: not just hold down the accelerator or bomb survival. | 2010-02-16 23:54:00 Author: Sehven Posts: 2188 |
I thought it was a great level guys, I loved how the npc gladiator move throughout the level with you. Also for any of you that plan to play it, the gladiator follow you, so for fun try stickering him an watching him, its so funny! I love the level and was happy to watch you guys do your "collabe creators" the other day, another great level from adipose and luos! Great job guys! | 2010-02-17 16:56:00 Author: damaz10 Posts: 771 |
I really what you've done guy. This might be some of the most innovative and interesting "2 players only" level since Dig It. Keep up the good work guys EDIT: And YES Kasabian is great music. I love that band. | 2010-02-17 17:11:00 Author: RangerZero Posts: 3901 |
Can't wait to play this Do you think it will be too hard for my eight-year old sister though? | 2010-02-17 18:45:00 Author: kirbyman62 Posts: 1893 |
Some of the games are tricker than others, but if you go through once learning it then go again playing against each other then she'll be fine. Thanks all for the positive comments so far. Our hope is to make one of those levels that people remember and go back to when they have a friend round. Its fun! Adi | 2010-02-17 18:50:00 Author: TheAdipose Posts: 533 |
one of those levels that people remember and go back to when they have a friend round Definitely. I haven't played online with a friend since you released the level, but I will take every opportunity to kick my friends' butts at this level. Have you given any thought to the balance issues I mentioned? Balance is subjective, so maybe I'm completely off base. All I know is that I'd much rather be blue than red. Just a few more posts and you'll be on the cool levels page. (It's 20 to get to cool levels, right?) | 2010-02-17 19:18:00 Author: Sehven Posts: 2188 |

Thanks guys Sadly the level has dropped to 3*. I guess the 2 player ONLY thing is costing us in the reviews. | 2010-02-18 07:40:00 Author: TheAdipose Posts: 533 |
Sadly the level has dropped to 3*. I guess the 2 player ONLY thing is costing us in the reviews. Nope. 3 Stars is the new 5 .. so congratulations I'll give this level a try tonight when I get the chance! | 2010-02-18 13:06:00 Author: Powershifter Posts: 668 |
i finally got round to playing this level and i have to say this level was very fun!!! the challenges were excellent and very entertaining. The character who tells you about each challenge was very well made and probably one of the best i have seen on LBP. My only problem was that, of coarse there is a blue and a red team but when you stand on the blue and the red grabable material, only the blue gets cheered, however i was blue so i was happy but my brother who i will admit was winning most of the challenges, was getting very frustrated that he was getting booed by the crowd, maybe you should have some way of making the person win get cheered and the loser gets booed. Also on the baloon shooting challenge, i won but my brothers red ball was blocking my way to the checkpoint so unfortunately i lost. Apart from these two gripes it was a very fun level of which i have hearted and have rated 5 stars, well done guys | 2010-02-18 14:56:00 Author: geddez12 Posts: 338 |
Thanks very much for the feedback. You arent the first person to mention the cheer/boos thing. I put it in as a kind of joke but it seems to have upset some players. Maybe I should just make them both cheers. | 2010-02-18 21:00:00 Author: TheAdipose Posts: 533 |
I wonder what other sorts of thinks we could come up with for the next AotG, if you make one. Maybe some where the gladiators have to help each other to progress further. | 2010-02-18 21:37:00 Author: RobotCrash Posts: 121 |
it seems to have upset some players. Maybe I should just make them both cheers. I wouldn't necessarily cave in on this one. I don't understand people being sensitive about it: it's a sound effect in a game; it's not like you're actually unpopular with a crowd. It does seem a bit arbitrary, though. Maybe it would be better if it were based on the performance of the players. Like whoever won the previous bout (or whoever has won more all together) could get cheered while the other gets booed. Sorry to hear about the three stars. I would've thought it would be at least a four star level. Personally, I gave it five 'cuz it was a unique idea that hadn't been done before (as far as I know) and it was well executed.... except for the fact that you can win every contest except the gondola and still lose the overall level. I'd like to see more decent pvp levels. In fact, I'm working on a pinball level that will let two players take turns and compete with each other. It's not exactly a pvp level, but I like the fact that I'm able to work in a little bit of competition. | 2010-02-18 22:22:00 Author: Sehven Posts: 2188 |
thats exactly what i thought, the cheers dont really matter but having them based on the performance of the player so that they cheer for the person who won. | 2010-02-18 23:58:00 Author: geddez12 Posts: 338 |
some very nice comments, thank you guys! | 2010-02-19 18:58:00 Author: Luos_83 Posts: 2136 |
I played it last night with my roommate (I won) and it was very fun. I enjoyed all the different races and the overall feel of the game. My comments would be to somehow make it so that whoever wins the last race is the person who gets cheered for in the next one. I also found that at the beginning of each challenge when it is trying to explain what to do, it got confusing. Sometimes it would activate sometimes it wouldn't, and sometimes it would start explaining after the challenge already began. I don't know if there is a better way at handling that but I remember that we got confused on one or two challenges because of the speech bubbles not going off when I think you meant them too. Overall it was a very enjoyable experience. I gave it five stars and a heart. P.S. if you could try mine out it would be greatly appreciate it (link is in the sig) EDIT: Never mind, I saw that you already left a comment on it! | 2010-02-20 19:16:00 Author: shebhnt Posts: 414 |
I loved this level. It brings a new meaning for PVP on LBP. The challenges where fresh and unique, and there were no glitches, except on the second challenge. I managed to "jet-pack jump" whilst holding the smallest piece and my friend built his way up, making a ramp. I wouldn't fix these because they are minor, plus it's thinking outside the box . Overall I enjoyed it, 5 stars. | 2010-02-21 04:02:00 Author: bonner123 Posts: 1487 |

This level is great fun. Good PvP-levels are rare, but this one is top notch. Fantastic character & cool challenges. Great atmosphere: it feels like you're hanging around in a insane funpark, just wasting time without a care in the world. No hurry to save the world, just let me win this next mini-game! (Brought back fond memories of the Golden saucer from FinalFantasy7.) I did manage to squash myself underneath one of the puzzle-pieces... is that a genius solution also...? | 2010-02-24 12:11:00 Author: pickled-punk Posts: 598 |
Yeah the squash happens on occaision - but Sarge does warn you to be careful! Thanks for the feedback mate | 2010-02-24 21:33:00 Author: TheAdipose Posts: 533 |
Cool, I couldn't play the whole thing because I was beating my friend in all the challenges so he didn't want to play anymore, but it is still a fun side-level. I don't know if you meant this but when you retry you skip the challenge. But anyway, I really like your gladiator dude. | 2010-02-26 19:33:00 Author: Gameplayer209 Posts: 9 |
thanks, im very proud of Sarge | 2010-02-28 20:00:00 Author: Luos_83 Posts: 2136 |
I'm not sure if I should bump this but I just have to leave a comment here. After I saw that video yesterday, I was just waiting for a chance to play this level. I invited my friend over, then we played it... WHOLY FLYING BANANAS! That was like the best 2 player level EVER! Everything was so perfect, the challenges, the logic behind those banners and gates that won't open if you try to go with two players to one place. The challenges were very different from each other, I liked everyone of them, even though I didn't win on all of them. At the end, that circle that shows the points seemed to be exactly 50:50 but turns out I won! WOHOO! :star::star::star::star::star: +♥ You don't have to, but as this is F4F, you could try my old survival challenge, deep danger (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=21168-Deep-danger-survival-challenge&p=375181). It only has 66 plays or so... | 2010-03-13 18:57:00 Author: napero7 Posts: 1653 |
Don't worry about bumping threads in the level showcase - it's allowed. So glad you enjoyed our level. I always thought this level was a good idea but it never got the attention I hoped it would. I'm really pleased that some people are still enjoying it | 2010-03-13 19:55:00 Author: TheAdipose Posts: 533 |
This level just won us a crown over on LBPW! thanks again to all who played, beta'd and left feedback. | 2010-03-28 23:16:00 Author: TheAdipose Posts: 533 |
