What are some of your favorite characters from online levels?

Archive: 35 posts

The title says it all.

What are some characters that realy amazed you fron online levels? I guess mine would have to be Wexfordian's characters from his The Good, The Bad, The Sackboy levels, or the characters from mrsupercomputer's level, Zephyr Valley.

So.. what are your favorites?

I have a lot! The performing brothers from Little Gypsy Circus by dajdaj03 comes to mind immediately. Of course, I loved all the characters in that level. I also really liked the dad and son from Criffer's Journey to the Center of the Earth Series, the ninja's from Kelder's level, Lafarges Request, Abyssia from the Chroma Stone Chronicles, the singing lumberjack in Mulberry Woods by moi, the miner in Compher's masterpiece, All Mine!, the Aliens in Splat Invaders Saga by CCubbage, the mutants in Subterranean Setbacks by rtm223, pretty much every character from Next Stop, Big City by DrunkenFist_Lee, pretty much ever character from Teebonesy's levels, Sarah in The Descent 2 (you only see her for a second, but it's great), the characters in NinjaMicWZ's Free at Last, the scientist from the Intermediate Logic Pack by moi again, the bees from Basketsnake's Honeyland levels, the weird guy from Pretty Simple by jackofcourse and so many more that I know I am forgetting, but this is a decent list me thinks.2010-02-15 01:10:00

That (above). Great list! Interestingly, the original characters from Journey to the center of the earth weren't that interesting (just the collector character from the story levels). A few of us mentioned it and he pulled some GREAT characters out of his hat.

I especially loved the bees from Basketsnake's Honeyland, which I think is also a really underrated and fantastic Nintendo'esque experience.

Also I'd like to add to the list: The Eyes from Little Big Apocalypse from JonMartin, the Hammer dudes from NinjaMicWZ's Facial Reconstruction, and Frankie from Frankies Fro from Wexfordian.

My all-time favorite characters are those in Zephyr Valley. The new ones look even better!

*Especially when they are dressed up creatively...

Everything mrsupercomputer said about covered it.

But, I also like: The Chief from Puzzle Island by chillum007, the princess from the Super Sack Bros. series by X-NOBODY-X, all characters from the LBP Comic Book Theatre series by squirlin, all characters made in the Character Competition, all recreations in the Star Wars ...etc! series by julesyjuiles, and Satan from Hells Angels 2 by poms.

You should see what I did to the bee's from CaptainCowboyHat's 4th OH NO!!! level. Without doubt the greatest character ever in LBP.

He left me alone in his new one level for less than 2 minutes, one placement of this character and it improved the whole level by 300% easy.

I would post the video but I would be banned from not only this site, but probably the internet.

All of Teebonesy's characters, they are so detailed, funny, and memorable.

And of course the frogs from IceMaiden's magnificent music level, I just stare at those in awe, they are perfection.

I remember that! After seeing the new characters, I couldn't believe he used the collector character at first! Man, talking about this makes me really wish he'd come back and release part three.

Oh yeah! Those are some of my absolute favorites! Darth Vader in LBP form is hilariously awesome.

Agreed!

^Can't believe I forgot to mention the lizard creatures in your Basilisk Bog level, those were just great, they were knda scary looking yet retained a funny appearence. I especially liked the boss, the way it moves is pretty simple but it's look is just amazing! Where did you get your inspiration for the creatures' overall look?2010-02-15 05:40:00

Any made by Basketsnake. They're so weird and so awesome, and I've never seen characters that have as much movement.2010-02-15 10:05:00

Yup, Baskets characters rock.

The best enemies I've seen were simple moving blocks with spikes on each side and a pair of big eyes. Can't remember the level sadly.

I also wanted to add that I've really enjoyed jump_button's creatures. The little blue skull enemies that frequent several of his levels are quite charming as are the fairies and other mystical creatures he's created.

Thanks, I'm glad you like them. The basilisks originally started with the one that pounded the ground... and he wasn't a basilisk at all, but a gorilla. I wasn't happy with how he looked though, so I kept playing around, added a tail, elongated the face, and ta da, a nice lizard creature was born! The boss was then made by translating the look of the smaller guys to a bigger scale, as well as losing the side profile for a front one, and then adding a few menacing details (the long spikes on his back) to make him look more boss like than the rest of the basilisks.

Ah yes.... the Basilisk from one of the top levels ever made, and the invention of the "paintball-squirty-weapon).

How about the serpent from Azure Palace? Now THAT was a character!

Also, how about that queen character from Elvenbane's last one? Wow!

See, when I published that, the last thing I was expecting was for people to be feeding back to me with the mutants as a plus point. Seriously - they look shocking and I never thought anyone would actually embrace that tiny snippet of dialogue!2010-02-15 19:19:00

Awesome examples so far and I agree with all of them. Especially GEK83's Vagrant Hero characters and almost everything Mrsupercomputer has done. I loved a lot of the characters from the Character creation contest we used to have here. Jwwphotos Pava-Robbi, Joey's robot, Gravel's Dragon, and Zwollie's wolf were great. So many great designs out of that competition.2010-02-15 19:40:00

I think Geks really stand out as something special. And if horses can be considered characters (and why not?) then dajdaj's are superb. There's a ninja level high on the Cools atm that has great characters too. I'm a big fan of a characters that have a simple stylised design, but with an arch of the eye, manage to convey something greater than faffing around with too much detail.

DrunkenFistLee's cut-outs deserve a mention too, the best I've seen! A right motley crew. : )

Zwollie's a character MASTER. His zombie character that never made it into the halloween contest was hilarious.

Also all of Morgana's character contest entries are ridiculously packed with character and charm. The moldy fridge monster is one of my favorites.

Special mention has to go to Gravel as well for his totally singular character style, the likes of which I haven't seen anywhere else.

The mutants are funny since they're naive, they stay there minding their own business and just bein' cool.
I don't know, they're good because they're "easy", they're not forced, they don't try to be something uber cool or whatever, they're the mutants, and they're in the level without any real reason or whatever, but they're a good add.

Sorry that I forget to mention the characters of Leathers Monkey Heavy Metal Mullet Planet.

My favourites have to be any made by BOIA.

He is a genius with characters and giving them movement. His bosses are just spectacular.

I love his 'Isacco' level though and still keep going back to play that every so often. The old guy in it who is having trouble with his TV is an absolute classic although there are lots of other awesome characters in that level alone. If you like to see great characters that level is a 'must play'. Go check it out and see for yourself, you won't be disappointed.

Have to agree with others about IceMaiden's frogs aswell. They are just sublime. What an artist. At the side of those any characters I attempt to make just look like matchstick men.

Thanks for this thread! I'm having trouble with my characters, so this collection of good examples is very convenient.

I was looking at the tutorial section for some tips, but I couldn't find much. Obviously there are some pretty good character creators here, maybe one of you could do a character tutorial?

Pretty much any mrsupercomputer character, the climbing dude in the bulldozer in 'All Mine' by comphermc, the ghetto characters in 'Sleepless Streets' by Aurongel and the characters in the cutscenes of 'The Good, The Bad and The Sackboy' Trilogy by Wexfordian. There's tons more! but I'm at work and I don't remember!2010-02-17 14:04:00

WOOT! I was mentioned in an actual thread!!! I am on cloud numero nine! Sally Field moment-- (How did I miss this, over a month old-- Teebonesy & Morgana! Must prepare suitably humble speech...) I must say, I do make the best characters I have ever scene in LBP. Yes, I am the best, as long as a sever debilitating arthritis immediately strikes... Morgana (pitch perfect), Joey (applied insanity), dadja (simple perfection), Teebonesy (wit & whimsy), JWW (for being funny as b*lls and so outside the box), Icey (for inspiring all with envy), Compher (too good @ too many things... and that miner!), Jules (silly & great comedic interpetations), Zwol-(got one!), Sup-computer (even his plasma balls have got style), Mr. Vista (tried and true unique consistency... his elephants!), Vortex (and his indestructible robots), Wex (yeah, that guy!) and every other freaking unsung closet artist out there in the LBWorld. Wait! Who made the Artist? Oh, and that cows level!

Seriously-- I immensly appreciate the nod.

My personal All-time favorite would have to go to Jayden simply for the style of his enemy sub-commander. Man, my jaw still hasn't come up off the floor... seriously in that flash of a cut scene-- time screeched to a halt as my brain began to list and take in every detail...

PS. Since I took down my levels-- there's no physical evidence, so this just may be the one chance for me to circulate my name with all the creators I've come to admire around here... basically everyone.
