Magic Mouth help.

Archive: 7 posts

We (partner and I) have this area of our level where we have Magic Mouths give clues as to what to do. There are a total of 5 magic mouths, all of which have a cut scene to show what it's talking about.

I have a proximity switch set to "On" and have connected it to the 5 MMs in the order I want them read. But after the second speech bubble opens up, a certain time limit is reached where the other three end up disappearing and in turn, cannot be read. I have made sure that Sackboy isn't floating (As this is underwater) outside the proximity switch's range, and I can't figure out any other way to fix this. Any help would be much appreciated.

This sounds really familiar. I had the same problem when I set up my cutscene on my Egyptian level. There's a trick to getting them to work without timing out but I'm not an expert at it at all. I do know that if your MM's are far enough apart they will time out and drop out before you can read them. I fixed this on mine by keeping them as close together as I could. I also set up a timing rig that would trigger MM 1 for x seconds then activate the second sensor to dissolve the block MM 1 was on and activate MM 2. Seemed to work. There's a tutorial around here somewhere that can explain it better than I can though. Let me find it and I'll post the link.

this thread talks about a lot of the problems people had with MM. Hopefully it helps

Hey, I've been having this problem lately too. The only new thing I can suggest is to move the mouths closer together. You can adjust the cutscene cameras wherever you want and they shouldn't time out, but I think the key is how far the mouth itself is away from Sackboy.

I would also set up a timing rig as Morgana said, and that should make it foolproof. Hope this helps

Yeah, if the next mouth is out of the cut scene view… it’ll disappear.
Plus the best way to hook em up would be by a censor switch set to one shot. That way the white text things at the top wont get in the way afterwards, and more importantly let you read all the text in order again if you miss it. With on/off if you try to read the text again, just the closest one will pop up.

Hope things work out for ya

Use magnetic key sequences. They work for me. I can only explain in the game so I'll add you and show you. 2010-02-15 14:29:00

I had a similar problem but mine happened even if I didn't trigger a whole bunch at once. Can't remember who it was that answered me, but it seems that magic mouths really don't like to stay open if they're not on camera. So you should be able to trigger a bunch all at once (I think the max is 8 at once before they stop working) but they would all have to be onscreen at all times.

Obviously that's not always practical, especially if there's a lot of distance between them. In that case, you'll want to use the timer method others have already suggested. I like to set them up so the next one in line triggers about half a second before you untrigger/destroy the previous one. Again, you need to make sure that the active mouth is onscreen. You can get away with having the next one offscreen as long as it doesn't trigger too early before detriggering the previous one: you get a second or two before it automatically deactivates.
