Flaming ArabiaCoxy224 Run, jump and grab your way through this Arabian styled platformer. Less thinking involved here - more of what you love, running, jumping and gadding about! Easy/Medium difficulty Well it's time for a new Coxy224 Level!!!! Haven't had one out in a while, and this one's been in the works for a few weeks now - and it would've been done a lot faster if you guys hadn't kept me busy spotlighting your levels! Anyway, it's average length (around 5-7 minutes for me to complete) with a lot of switch pulling and platforming, just like the good old days! Thanks to Mr and Mrs V, IceMaiden, The Adipose and anyone else who popped along to play it during the pretty bad "testing" phase. Hope you enjoy ad I look forward to your feedback. I'll do all F4F's, just leave a level name or I'll just choose one of your levels | 2010-02-14 00:26:00 Author: Coxy224 Posts: 2645 |
OMG..... I started working on an arabian style level...... I guess I must play this! Edit : Ok just did! It's the kind of level I like, some good old platforming and simple switch pulling, so it was very fun to play! I died quite a few times but the dificulty is well balanced, which is a good point! The visuals are very good and cleanly made in the pure MM abstract style (a little jackofcourse's too)! Maybe some decorations, or lightings (orange/red for the fire) could have added a little something... 1 little remark : in the section with the stomping stone blocks, I was not sure what the switches were for...? Nothing happened when I pulled them... Maybe a sound and/or a mouth camera could help to know what's happening! Anyway, this is a very enjoyable and well done level! Good job! | 2010-02-14 01:00:00 Author: dajdaj03 Posts: 1486 |
Hmm sounds like a very good idea, Do you mind if i use it for a future creation of mine? | 2010-02-14 01:16:00 Author: Castleland Posts: 32 |
Great level Coxy although I knew that already having had a few peeks at it in the making. The finished article did throw up a few surprises though so well done on that. The design is great and the switch pulling is all done in way that doesn't feel repetitive and works really well. The difficulty for me is just about spot on. I only really died a lot in 2 places. 1 being the block key you have to maneouvre through the gas. I just couldn't push it into the gas without dying although pulling from the other side was ok. The other place was the 2 platforms one of which was grabbable with the spiked roof above. I died a lot there until i got the hang of the timing so maybe it was just me. Anyway overall it's a great fun level. No need for F4F thanks. Save it for my next level which will probably be a revamp of my 2 player valentine's level. | 2010-02-14 01:16:00 Author: mistervista Posts: 2210 |
Thanks for playing guys @dajdaj - I was wandering if people wouldn't realise what those switches did, so thanks for telling me - I'll make sure to add a speech bubble or something @Castleland - hey, I don't own the idea but mke sure you don't copy my level, and if you take any major ideas from the level then give credit? Thanks | 2010-02-14 11:29:00 Author: Coxy224 Posts: 2645 |
Hey, excellent level ! :hero: I'm generally not keen on of this arabian style, but I did like your level, great use of the corner editor That was fun, the obstacles and the challenges were clever. | 2010-02-14 14:15:00 Author: Oddmania Posts: 1305 |
This level is really excellent. It reminds me a lot of Tribal Ruins by jackofcourse. The visuals were great and it was fun to play. I do agree with the above comments on the stomping stones area, where you pull the switches to lift the gates - a majic mouth or some activation sound effect would be nice to add. I also agree on the key that you push through the gas area. It's not impossible, but hard to do without dying. I think it would helpful to make the sponge a tad larger, and the opening in the thin layer a tad larger as well. Another thought I had was for the sections where there a several large fireballs dropping in the background - it might add a little drama to add a fiery hiss sound when they are falling. There is one section like this near the end of the level that I thought this would be a particularly nice effect because there are many fireballs dropping at once there. Overall, really well done level. I don't have any brand new levels, but if you could provide some feedback on the most updated version of Curse of the Golden Temple, I would appreciate it. Thanks. | 2010-02-14 17:04:00 Author: pennydog Posts: 74 |
Hey just played your level. I really liked it because it wasn't too showy and yet looked great - the focus was definitely on a balance of looks and gameplay. The obstacles were fun to get past and not too difficult. The theme too was original - the materials worked well together. I would say pushing the stone through the gas was slightly annoying, though. It is slightly thinner than the width of the gas, so I died pretty much every time I pushed it through. Maybe have slopes for the stone to roll down and through. But all in all, a simple, fun and great looking level. :star::star::star::star::star: PS: Please can you check out some of my F4Fs. They should be in my signature. I'll check it out ASAP. | 2010-02-14 22:57:00 Author: KQuinn94Z Posts: 1758 |
Very good llevel, somewhat simple visuals (but still good!) and nice gameplay make this a fun level to play. I especially liked the basket ride to the end and the platforms that catapult you too high if you don't hang on to them; it was a very original implementation! One thing: It felt like i was gypped out of getting a good combo in one or two spots because the point bubbles weren't close enough to each other, especially near the start. | 2010-02-15 02:15:00 Author: RCIX Posts: 250 |
A very entertaining level with varied gameplay. A friend played along with me, and 2P worked just fine: we had a lot of fun racing against each other. (With all the horsing around, we did manage to get thrown out of the basket-carriage at the end). Difficulty was just right. Not too hard, not too easy. Pushing & pulling the key through the gasclouds was indeed a bit of a frustrating speed bump in the otherwise great flow of your level. The layout of your level was impressive: clean and simple design, yet full of small hidden areas and pathways. Fantastic stuff! It would be great if you could take a look at my first level, Lady Masquette and the puzzle garden, and give me some feedback. https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=22168-Lady-Masquette-and-the-puzzle-garden | 2010-02-15 21:04:00 Author: pickled-punk Posts: 598 |
I really like this level! Visuals reminded me of a jackofcourse level. Which is definately a good thing. Gameplay was fun, simple and it was the perfect length. I'd give it 5 stars and a heart. Great job icey | 2010-02-15 21:09:00 Author: KQuinn94Z Posts: 1758 |
Hai Coxy - Just checked it out and it's fun! + Liked your material choices a lot. + It's geometry is good - reminds me a bit of Jack's too but it's got your style to it as well + Some places are really quite challenging - that's something new for you and I like it. It's a little short for my taste and there's a lot of jump only kind of platforming, sort of wished there was a little more variety in it. I really did like the level and it's made very well. Thanks for another cool experience | 2010-02-16 04:30:00 Author: Morgana25 Posts: 5983 |
Cool level Bud! I really like the complexity of these kinds of levels. Like in levels like jackofcourse' he makes things that don't just open one platform, but like 4 others! Or when you complete a section, only to do another section within that section, those kind of things really strike me as great haha. In your's you walked behind a couple of sections to lead to another section and then back and so on and so forth. Love it! Very nice look of the level, very middle-eastern IMO. Really captured the theme here. Only complaint is that part with the stomping blocks, what were those two switches for? They didn't do anything that I could see :O Other than that, :star::star::star::star::star: !! If you could, F4F my level, Canyon of The Three-Headed Beast! The link to it's thread is in my signature. Thanks in advance! | 2010-02-16 07:20:00 Author: SupaSack34 Posts: 180 |
I really enjoyed playing your level. The gameplay was excellent. It’s nice to have a few challenging sections even if I do always lose a stack of points dying on those two moving platforms near the end with the spikes above. The design of the level is really good – great use of all three layers with criss-crossing paths and different interlocking areas. I did manage to skip a very small part of the level by accident though. I managed to jump onto a piece of fire which bounced me down to the right to the switch which you normally only reach from the left by jumping across the 3 revolving flaming platforms and then grab swinging. Not a big issue but I thought I should let you know. The visuals are cool too, although as a matter of personal taste I would have liked to see the occasional dash of colour (maybe some Moorish tiles or some kind of coloured sticker). That sort of thing is so subjective though and the materials you chose all looked good together. My only other comment is that I think in the level description it says that the difficulty is EASY. I would have said that was a tiny bit misleading as the block in the gas and those two moving platforms are not really easy. I’m just worried that you may end up with some annoyed players rating it down because they thought it was going to be a walkover! I think that the way you described it in the OP i.e. as easy/medium is perhaps more accurate. All in all a fun and well designed level. 5 stars and a heart. | 2010-02-16 13:34:00 Author: shropshirelass Posts: 1455 |
Really liked Flaming Arabia, Coxy. It's a fun, enjoyable level, with great design and for me, just the right level of difficulty. There are a couple of tricky parts, but nothing I couldn't manage. Well done. :star::star::star::star::star: | 2010-02-16 15:54:00 Author: mrsvista Posts: 755 |
I really enjoyed playing you level Coxy, both in it's development stage, for which I thank you for the priviledge, and on it's completion. I love the visuals, the colours for me are spot on with an excellent choice of materials. Gameplay is just right too, enough of a challenge but not too difficult. I love the theme too and it was really exciting seeing the additions I hadn't seen before! Well done Coxy, easily one of your best levels, I loved it. Five stars and a gagillion hearts! Wow, Coxy - I'm impressed! This level was a lot of fun. Clean graphics, solid gameplay - very professional! Didn't find any fault with it, everything worked nicely. | 2010-02-17 03:50:00 Author: CCubbage Posts: 4430 |
OK guys, thanks for the wonderful feedback, various stars and some hearts, it's really apprieciated! I just went through and made some major changes to both sound and graphics due to various feedback. Cutscenes added for switches in the stomping blocks area - thanks to dajdaj and pennydog Push sponge through gas section made easier - thanks to MrV and pickled-punk More score bubbles added to keep combos going - thanks to RCIX Description changed to [EASY / MEDIUM] - thanks to shropshirelass Some new decorations added Complete overhaul of the lighting in the level. It now has a large amount of LED's and a darker background - thanks to TheAdipose and Luos | 2010-02-18 11:29:00 Author: Coxy224 Posts: 2645 |
I'd say that's enough to persuade me for another round of golf | 2010-02-18 13:52:00 Author: KQuinn94Z Posts: 1758 |
Had another run through to see the changes Coxy and it's looking great. The lighting is brilliant. I did have one small problem however. The spinning wheel that is half embers didn't spin after I pressed the red switch. It could have been something I did wrong, I'm rubbish with electricals, but I thought you might want to check it out. Icey | 2010-02-18 14:54:00 Author: IceMaiden Posts: 1057 |
Hey Coxy, I had the same problem as IceMaiden. I think you may have accidentally glued the wheel to the superstructure. Up until that point it was a pretty fun experience. Overall it plays great and is well polished. My only minor troubles with the level were the section where you push the block through the gas and generally not observing the various shimmy areas until I had died once. For the gas, I almost ran directly into it my first time not realizing it was there. Also, due to the wispy nature of gas, it's hard to estimate how close you can get. You can always outline the danger zone with stickers or thin layer materials warning players where the boundaries are. Looking forward to another playthrough when the wheel is fixed! | 2010-02-18 17:23:00 Author: Thegide Posts: 1465 |
Grrr, I did play through this one many times trying to get rid of the bugs like that darned wheel. Every now and then it just stops working for no reason. It's an easy fix though so I'll get on that ASAP - thanks for pointing it out guys. Also Gide, I like your idea for the gas section so I'm gonna see if I can get that to look nice. Thanks EDIT: Fixed the wheel (I hope) and also tryed to make the gas section easier.. not sure if I suceeded though | 2010-02-18 23:31:00 Author: Coxy224 Posts: 2645 |
I'll take a look when i fire up the PS3 again, sounds like you've made some good changes! | 2010-02-19 06:48:00 Author: RCIX Posts: 250 |
Played the level again and the changes are great. The lighting in particular has made a huge difference. It really lifts the visuals to a new plane - first class job! | 2010-02-19 22:27:00 Author: shropshirelass Posts: 1455 |

Congratulations on the Spotlight Coxy! You so deserve it for this brilliant level. This real IceMaiden is really proud of you | 2010-02-20 12:26:00 Author: IceMaiden Posts: 1057 |
Great level coxy! Did you ever get that crazy sledge under control? Anway back to this one. fantastic planning in the level structure. the economy with which you use and re-use sections is very clever and not at all repetitive. Great use of inter changing between the three planes, never encountered a single problem with this.A fluid gameplay experience even for a playtard like me. I see folks draw inevitable comparison with Jackofcourses style of level, maybe to differentiate it and add an extra incentive for replays you could add a find the secret sections/bubbles as CaptainCowboyHat did so successfully in his Ali Baba and the 40 bubbles level. afew closer camera angle and spot effects would also enhance the experience, but mightily impressed with what is a slick and fun level! 4stars and hearted. | 2010-02-20 18:01:00 Author: EnochRoot Posts: 533 |
Thanks for the comments guys @Icey and MrsV - thanks a lot, I'm so glad that this got spotlighted because I really think this is one of my best levels and I enjoyed creating it too! @Enoch - haha no I never managed to tame that beast! It was just a bit too much for even me to keep under control. Didn't you just love smashing into wall at the end though? What other levels do you get to blow up skeletal reindeer in? Thanks for the feedback too enoch, I'll try and improve on the level next time I'm on | 2010-02-20 23:34:00 Author: Coxy224 Posts: 2645 |
Well deserved spotlight! | 2010-02-21 16:31:00 Author: pickled-punk Posts: 598 |
@Castleland - hey, I don't own the idea but mke sure you don't copy my level, and if you take any major ideas from the level then give credit? Thanks[/QUOTE] Ah, shoot at least I tried? Lol i'm just kidding i ♥ your level! | 2010-02-21 21:48:00 Author: Castleland Posts: 32 |
Sorry to take so long on the feedback, it's far improved over the last time i played and i have only one complaint: it's still too easy to lose the combo very early on in the level (like when jumping across the platforms over fire), if you hung a bubble or two in the air between the platforms (for example) that would help. | 2010-02-26 03:11:00 Author: RCIX Posts: 250 |
Bad: -Visuals were not bad, they were actually really good but they got boring in the end4 Good: +Gameplay: lots of different obstacles and puzzles +Unique: the thing I appreciate the MOST in levels. +Levels logo ORDERED me to play this one (when I played this I didn't know that this is on LBPC) Critic: :star::star::star::star::star: and <3 I think that new levels are becoming mor better and better. I think I better start linearing levels I give heart to and what I don't. Play my level The Cellar as feedback mate! | 2010-05-07 18:47:00 Author: FreeAim Posts: 2462 |
