TenementUngreth http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/1818/tenement.jpgStricken with grief, a sack takes his own life after losing his wife and child in a tenement fire. But before his spirit can move on, he must first face his demons and find his peace. Okay, I've released the lock. After weeks of indecision I've decided to throw caution into the wind, blow a raspberry at my better judgement and finally unleash this abomination on the public. However, a word of warning...certain scenes and themes featured in this level may seem disturbing to sensitive players. If that's you then do me a favour and go play something else because Tenement isn't for you. On the other hand, if you're a little bit mentally deranged and feel ready for a headfunking weird-fest then feel welcome to take the plunge. Now all that's left is to pack my bags and head for my hideout in the hills. Bye bye! (credit to rtm223 for his invaluable technical contributions, most notably making multiple solutions to a certain puzzle possible) http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/6978/25200250.jpg http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/2553/80887126.jpg http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/5937/93430168.jpg http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/9074/37179414.jpg http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/6529/71147240.jpg http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/6104/13490247.jpg | 2010-02-13 21:14:00 Author: Ungreth Posts: 2130 |

I see you've "enhanced" it further my friend. Well I've just turned off my ps3, but when I go back to it in an hour this is getting 5 stars and a heart from me | 2010-02-13 22:06:00 Author: rtm223 Posts: 6497 |
Amazing level, but not for the feint of heart. I recommend this to all the adults here at LBPC. It is a bit "dark" as has some disturbing scenes, but it's a wonderfully crafted level from start to finish. Great use of the sack-tracker! 5 stars and a hearty. Edit: I almost feel like we need to start a new thread to talk about the symbolism and meanings of all the different parts of the level! | 2010-02-13 22:35:00 Author: comphermc Posts: 5338 |
Wow.... incredible level. I totally agree with CompherMC.... little kids probably shouldn't play this. Dark, quite a bit of symbolism. I think this is your best work yet. It had me glued to my seat from beginning til end. The puzzle you had in the middle was a bit complex - took me a little while to solve it, however it was totally worth it. Great job! 5 stars and a heart. | 2010-02-13 22:55:00 Author: CCubbage Posts: 4430 |
Great visuals and spellbinding imagery. It was complex, too, but it held my attention all the way. Now, on to the theme. I'm an old git, and I hold my breath every time someone releases a level with adult themes. To me, it's a breath of fresh air, but to others it may be the stagnant stench of disgust that leads them to the moderation call. Time will tell, but I truthfully hope that this level remains available to play. It's morbid, sure, but I love morbid, and I love artistry and those who are genuine to themselves. To Sony: leave this gem alone - it is NOT negotiable. 18.6 stars, hearted and tagged with 'Hades' | 2010-02-13 23:08:00 Author: MrsSpookyBuz Posts: 1492 |
Edit: I almost feel like we need to start a new thread to talk about the symbolism and meanings of all the different parts of the level! Glad it didn't go unnoticed. The overarching theme of Tenement is the cycle of life, death and rebirth and there are many subtle references throughout the level. If anyone wants to ask me more about 'em, feel free to PM me. There's also a huge Eraserhead reference for David Lynch fans, plus a reference to The Shining for those with a keen eye to spot it. There are 5 secret areas to find too, including my trademark "super tough to find" picture of my daughter Ana-Lucia which is lurking in there somewhere. Nobody to my knowledge has ever found this picture in any of my levels, although it's actually hidden in each of them. | 2010-02-14 01:40:00 Author: Ungreth Posts: 2130 |
I found a picture of some guy. He was in a little room with a table and a bottle of wine. --- And I did very much enjoy that overarching theme, even if I didn't fully comprehend it all. Edit: I found her. That was hidden very well, you sneaky sneak! Check your uploaded pics... | 2010-02-14 01:48:00 Author: comphermc Posts: 5338 |
I really hate to say it, but you might be getting a moderation call (maybe from me, maybe not). Think about it this way: Would you want YOUR six-year-old playing it? After all, i seriously doubt parents bought this game and said, "well i can't let my 6 year old play it online because it's an E for everyone game and Sony/Mm moderates the levels so it's safe for everyone". Someone does need to moderate these levels, and i know you put a lot of hard work in it but why do you have to publish it? If there was an "adults" section of LBP it might be fine if kids couldn't easily get to it, but otherwise... | 2010-02-14 06:45:00 Author: RCIX Posts: 250 |
It was fun and very well made until I got to the shape puzzle thing that annoyed me so I quit after much time wasted trying to do it. It is a real shame I could not see the entire level it was very good. | 2010-02-14 08:12:00 Author: Xeno_Destroyer Posts: 72 |
I'm surprised the shapes puzzle is causing difficulties, there are at least 8 solutions to it (possibly more). If you think it was awkward to solve the puzzle in play, you should have seen the efforts put in in create mode to get it to detect every possible solution I do think one of the swings over the thorns (before the scorpion guy) still needs a bit of a tune up, as it's far to easy to die there by accident. Not sure how many of the secrets I've found. 2 I found on my own and you showed me Ana-Lucia. I'll have to have a look again sometime soon. | 2010-02-14 12:03:00 Author: rtm223 Posts: 6497 |

It's true that rtm put his heart and soul into making a multi solution possible! (I have credited you in my intro post up there mate, but thanks again for all the help.). You're probably right about the thorns...I'll take a look at it. Edit: I've tweaked the "swings" over the thorns to make it easier to swing back and forth without getting your butt spiked. I've also added a prize bubble containing a clue that shows one possible solution to the block puzzle...but it's hidden in a secret area. Played it yesterday, and I enjoyed it! I'm not into horror levels usually, but this one is very orginal! I like the way how you presented those successive "nightmare visions"and the visuals and the atmosphere were great! Unfortunatly, I had a problem at the statue section. I didn't manage to solve the puzzle (I tried like 15 mn) and then I didn't know what I did, but one of the blocks get stuck and then broke and dissapeared. So I had no choice but to quit... I'll try to replay it Great and orginal level anyway! It's the kind of level that we can't forget easily... | 2010-02-14 17:20:00 Author: dajdaj03 Posts: 1486 |

I allowed for block breakage by setting the whole puzzle to an "rtmitter". If a block breaks, just touch the statue once to make everything vanish, then touch it again to make the puzzle reappear in it's original formation. Edit: @IsTwisted...if you saw the picture you already found a secret. There's one score bubble in each of the five secret areas, and you should have spotted the blue one, no? Well, that's the secret. | 2010-02-14 17:55:00 Author: Ungreth Posts: 2130 |
Actually, you can also just try and complete the puzzle with the pieces missing.... As long as there are no pieces outside the box, you win! so actually, if anyone is really struggling, try just destroying all of the pieces, that will "solve" the puzzle | 2010-02-14 18:09:00 Author: rtm223 Posts: 6497 |
Unfortunatly, I had a problem at the statue section. I didn't manage to solve the puzzle (I tried like 15 mn) and then I didn't know what I did, but one of the blocks get stuck and then broke and dissapeared. So I had no choice but to quit... I had this problem once myself. But you can reset the puzzle. Grab the statue on the left and the scales tip back, then grab it again on the right and it starts over for you (re-emits the puzzle). In fact - I may be wrong here... you may only need to grab it again on the right (Ungreth? rtm?). Ungreth... I've had a great time with this level. I playtested it for you earlier on and have been stuck a few times, but was definitely worth the replays! A great level, my friend. Very creepy and spooky and sad. Incredible lighting throughout - the tenement scenes were surreal and beautiful. And so many truly creepy moments (the body bag, the larvae, the temptress/monster, decapitated head(s), and of course, that final chase!!). We (my son and I) had a great time with it. Now, you know where I got stuck this last time. I ended up convincing myself that the jump in question was not possible. So maybe a little more hint (a prize or points bubble on the platform, perhaps) would keep someone like me in the game. That's really my only critique. The spikes mentioned earlier, I think are quite challenging without being frustrating. Now there are a few things that you've done in here that I need to take a moment to applaud. The scene where the whole room is on fire, but we are not getting burned - great effect and very heart-poundingly scary. The other thing is your stairs... now this is not an original trick - I've seen it in several levels, including the recently spotlighted Kiminski level - but I think everyone in LBP should take note and make their stairs this way. You've placed a plane of invisible material across the slope of the steps, making it unnecessary to jump for every step but rather, to be able to run quickly up and down them (notably UP). Such a subtle detail, but your attention to it, as with all the other wonderful details in this level, are what set you apart as an elite creator. IMO. :star::star::star::star::star:, Hearted, and tagged Creepy (and Weird and Beautiful and Great - Yes, I've played it a few times)! EDIT: Ah, rtm beats me to it with a much simpler approach (big surprise)! Thanks! | 2010-02-14 18:14:00 Author: v0rtex Posts: 1878 |

Or did you? Doh, I can't remember now. I was kinda distracted by my head exploding as you set up the logic for that puzzle. Vortex, I'll take a look at that platform issue. | 2010-02-14 18:34:00 Author: Ungreth Posts: 2130 |

Well I finished it this time that dang bird....I was just climbing trees and bam he swoops down for the kill >.< lol when I saw him at the end I ran away then realized he was sorry and wanted to help. | 2010-02-14 23:03:00 Author: Xeno_Destroyer Posts: 72 |
This level is so unspeakably epic. I loved the difficulty, the monsters, the surprises, the laughs, the horror, the layer design, the lighting, th puzzles, the stickering, everything is so brilliantly done, great work 5 Stars and a heart! | 2010-02-14 23:56:00 Author: Incinerator22 Posts: 3251 |
Well. That was disgusting. And I loved every second of it. It was wonderfully detailed and challenging enough to make me struggle at sections. I like that in a level. The part with the green lit spinning X's nearly had me giving up though. It was a pain to do the first hard jump and then jumping over that gap was another pain. On my least attempt before throwing the controller across the room I was able to make both. Very well done 5 star and hearted. | 2010-02-15 00:00:00 Author: ezBadfish Posts: 52 |
Hmm...I seem to have caused you some offence, for which I apologise. However, if you feel that strongly then I suggest that you good grief me. It is your right to do so and I'll totally understand. Really. Its' not that, it's just i don't want you to get into too much hot water for publishing a T or M rated level in an E game! Thanks for understanding | 2010-02-15 01:05:00 Author: RCIX Posts: 250 |
Genius. Kudos on finally publishing this superbly crafted, dark masterpiece of symbolism and the surreal. It was an absolute priveledge to play. Every part of the level was devilishly rich in atmosphere and held my attention right to the end. I'm not sure how people are having trouble with the block puzzle. The stack is already pretty much pre-arranged and just needs to be transferred into place, although I did manage to get myself squished between the blocks an awful lot. The hallway where the ghostly hand chases the player as the lights go out one by one looked familiar ;-) Not sure if it was just me but it seemed to be moving at a far slower speed than the player, so I didn't actually realise it was chasing me until it caught up once I had stopped running. If the speed was altered so it stays just far enough ahead of the dimming lights to see, it'd be pretty terrifying. Hopefully this level stays under the radar long enough to avoid being griefed. Moderrating a work of art such as this would be an absolute sin. 5* Hearted. | 2010-02-15 02:18:00 Author: Unknown User |

Yes, what RoseScyth said Could you explain some more of the symbolism Ungreth? I'm reading this with only 5 minutes before I go to work, but I'll try and post some kind of explanation this evening. | 2010-02-15 07:15:00 Author: Ungreth Posts: 2130 |
Hey just finished this! I loved it - granted it's not really for kids, but you did put a disclaimer in the level info. Now that I know there are secret areas I may just have to go back. I like the idea that you've hidden the same item throughout your levels. You had a few really good ideas in this level, most notably the mirror. I'm not sure I've ever seen anyone actually pull off a mirror like that! It's one of those ideas that is simple to implement, but is never seen in most levels. Also, I'm not sure why everyone was having a problem with the statue puzzle - you literally gave the answer away (or maybe you recently added the 'hint'?). The guys with the triangle heads reminded me of a movie and I can't think of what it was?! I don't think it was the shinning, but it was definitely something! I even liked the scoreboard at the end. Overall I gave you 5 stars and a heart - nicely done! | 2010-02-15 20:16:00 Author: Powershifter Posts: 668 |
I finally got to play this level, i was pleasantly surprised with the wtf factor. I love the atmosphere, the rough, gnarly look and feel. I felt like that little guy you follow around was the burn victim showing you the torment he went through. The horror scenes are done very well, i especially liked the hand that chased you through the hallway with that perfect camera angle. There was good gameplay but it got tricky in some points. I got stuck for at least 10 minutes at the start where you kill the big bug and small ones appear. I didnt make the connection to give it to the bird because they looked like roaches, not worms. The statue part took me a little while as well, but not the square puzzle, which was simple to me. After i did it i struggled to figure out that you could go right in that pening under the checkpoint. Also, nothing happened when i gave the tribe the coin. The only real gripe i have is that some of the little monsters really looked out of place with your theme, their sometimes bright colors or just goofy appearance really took away from the dark atmosphere. Overall i really enjoyed this level and gave it the 5 stars and heart it deserves. I dont see how this level gets modded. The only cause to mod in my eyes is childish things like the male genetilia, not a lil blood and a MM object skull. EDIT: Reading through other posts, i loved the bodybag with the trail of blood and knife, my favorite part. | 2010-02-16 01:23:00 Author: Jrange378 Posts: 573 |
One more question/comment. I love the music you used, especially how it's not on a regular beat, it really stands out. Great work . Is it a specific song? | 2010-02-16 02:52:00 Author: Incinerator22 Posts: 3251 |

The little guy is an apparition of your wife and child who died in the fire, though they are actually more a manifestation of your sack's guilt than the actual ghosts of your beloved ones. Nothing's meant to happen when you give the witches their coin. It just lowers the score bubble so you can reach it. That's a secret area in fact, and the bubble contains a sticker showing a clue to the pythagoras puzzle. Which monsters specifically looked goofy to you? Do you mean the ones in the first building? If so, i guess they do look kinda goofy. That bright pink is a universal theme among the creatures of the level though (apart from that bird of course). Everyone else does dark shadowy monsters. Ungreth does bright pink fleshy ones. Quirk, trademark, bad design choice...call it what you will, but it's staying. One more question/comment. I love the music you used, especially how it's not on a regular beat, it really stands out. Great work . Is it a specific song? Thanks, it's my own composition. I call it "Disintegration: Hazy Memories of a Pretentious Song Title" The logic behind it is actually very simple. | 2010-02-16 03:19:00 Author: Ungreth Posts: 2130 |

Aw, I am very unhappy you added music D: Or at least such loud music. The level is meant to be dark and creepy and not a single song fits it's theme. And to change music so suddenly between scenes seems even worse. The setting might change but the level theme never changes. And custom music doesn't blend with in-game music. Your level is just not the kind of level music goes well with. | 2010-02-17 04:14:00 Author: Incinerator22 Posts: 3251 |
Played it tonight and it's every bit as macabre and metaphorical as the first time you showed me and then some. I do love the symbolism and the emotional component you have in every scene. Really artsy avant garde kind of stuff Ungreth, truly. 5 stars and hearted and here's to keeping the younger players out of there so it can stay on the server! | 2010-02-17 06:46:00 Author: Morgana25 Posts: 5983 |

Your level is just not the kind of level music goes well with. Huh? Nothing's changed since the first time you played. The music has always been there. Personally I thought the Saragama Sun music nicely complimented the silhouetted section of the level. If there was no music at all, then you can guarantee that somebody would complain it was all too quiet. I even received such a complaint about Gothic Reverie, despite the fact there was music all the way through it. I just can't win... | 2010-02-17 20:58:00 Author: Ungreth Posts: 2130 |
I really enjoyed this, as always, a unique experience from you. I think my favourite things were the larvae and the body bag, that very slight movement just made them so creepy and Resident Evil, lol, great stuff. It deserves to stay griefed-free too, if there can be 'Saw' levels on page blimmin 1, there's no reason this should get singled out. | 2010-02-17 21:55:00 Author: julesyjules Posts: 1156 |

Wow, that was quite the level. Never played something quite like it. Very well done! I really enjoyed the atmosphere you created, especially how it continuously changed from the apartment building to the city streets, to "hell" or wherever the statue thing was, and then to the silhouetted part. all the parts of the level worked very well together to achieve an incredibly interesting level throughout. The level reminded me quite a bit of Silent Hill, which is my favorite horror game by far . I thought the block puzzle, although not hard, broke the pace and tension of the level. Moving and stacking the blocks can be tricky work and by the time you're done the sense of wonder and fear was long gone. I also thought it didn't quite fit with the level's atmosphere. Maybe you could replace it with something that better fit the theme of the level? That's my only criticism though. An amazing level that really deserves to be noticed. 5 stars and a heart | 2010-02-24 18:06:00 Author: Duffluc Posts: 402 |

Between the oppressive atmostphere of the appartments and the challenging platforming sections of the second half, I felt that the player could use a breather. It seems clear from your post though, that's not necessarily the case. However, since rtm223 so kindly channelled his energy into making multiple solutions possible for the block puzzle, I've absolutely no intent of dishonoring my friend and mentor by throwing his hard work on the scrap heap. | 2010-02-24 21:05:00 Author: Ungreth Posts: 2130 |

Gosh, the secrets here are not easy to find All I could find was a pull-away sponge leading into a room with a picture frame of a playstation eye hooded guy. Also, thoughts on symbolism? I'm curious | 2010-02-25 06:18:00 Author: Incinerator22 Posts: 3251 |
Played this last night and loved it - its epic! I especially like the fact that its creepy n sinister in a surreal way, which keeps the cliches at bay that many horror levels seem to suffer from The scene with the house n the giant guy chained to it and the eagle attacking for instance is just so bizzarely beautiful - it reminded me of certain surrealist paintings (I notice you have Goya, Blake and Fuseli on the walls at one point too, nice!) a must play! (btw I like the puzzle section, i like puzzles anyway but i agree, it provides a welcome break from the intensity and nicely ushers in the next section which has a more dreamy other worldy atmosphere) | 2010-06-07 16:05:00 Author: AccumulationNone Posts: 58 |
