How about the option to change backgrounds mid level?

Archive: 10 posts

The backgrounds we are provided with in LBP can do wonders for a level on a visual level, but only if they fit the theme. Yet often none of the backgrounds DO fit the theme of a level, and we end up having to use none of them.

For example, I really like the dome ceiling of the Pantheon background, the one you get in the history pack. I thought it could be worked into a cave or ruins level nicely because of its massive scale. but then, after you've passed the width of the ceiling, you're suddenly on a busy urban street, which is not where I want to be. Wouldn't it be cool if you could fade the background out, using the global lighting tool possibly? Then you would n't have to worry about the rest of the background, which you don't want!

There's also a lot of really neat areas in backgrounds that only occupy a small portion of the whole thing (like the crystal caves in the monsters theme, or the huge bear in the wilderness theme). It would be really neat if we could make use of these portions of the backgrounds without having to worry about how we're going to work our level around the rest of theme.

What do you guys think?

This is a really good idea it would be so kewl if you could do this. However there is an alternative, Me and Luos_Desruc where doing a bit of creating and trying out different techniques when we came up wiht this:

First get a carboard box
Take a picture of the background
Put the picture on the craboard and voila

this way you cna have two backgrounds its not the best qaulity in the world but it works.

This would really help to establish the feel of the level and I really wish it could be done but I have the feeling that it would be too hard. Oh well still a cool idea I suppose we'll just have to make do with what lbpholic said.2010-02-14 02:45:00

I definitely support this. It'd be cool to do something like what the end of The Temples was, with the level changing from India stuff to a snow-covered field. However, the biggest obstacle is probably load times and the ever-annoying Thermometer. I'm sure you've noticed the lag when you select a different background in Create Mode. To cache the data for two backgrounds in the same level would probably increase the load time a lot, not to mention that it'd look kinda silly to see The Metropolis getting movie-transition'd (or even just a simple fade) into the Caribbean background.

But if they can figure out how to make it look natural, and not increase load times very much, then this would be a great idea. In the meantime, blank background + emitter + Background Layers Glich is the best we can do.

Yeah, I thought this option would have been included with the global control switch and was disappointed when it wasn't.2010-02-16 02:43:00

Even if the option was to fade in and out only ONE background it would help a lot. I doubt that would increase load times by too much, but I could understand how it might be hard to have one detailed background fade into another. But I don't know how it works, so it's up to MM to figure it out. 2010-02-18 08:39:00
