n00b help - one shot sticker switch malfunction!

Archive: 17 posts

Ahhh ok, total noob question here.

I have a sticker switch. It is set to 1-shot and to take the ducky sticker. It is not inverted, not visible, as a reasonably small trigger area and there is no ducky sticker nearby, or in the level at all.

Why does it fire everytime I unpause, or enter the level, surely this should only happen if there is a ducky nearby, yes?

Sounds logical to me..... hmmm.. have you ever activated it in create mode? Could just be a glitch. If it were me I'd replace the sticker switch or change the sticker that activates it and see what it does.2010-02-11 20:21:00

Weird...

I agree with Morgana and try to replace the sticker switch. Another thought if it keeps acting up as possibly some issue with one shot is to hook it to a perm switch and let it be your one shot. Silly, but might be the only way if there is truly a bug with One Shot sticker switches.

I had accidentally triggered it in create mode. Placing the sticker switch on a surface with a sticker on it, then tweaking it to be ducky made it fail

This is shockingly inconsistent with the other switches though

Yea the sticker ones are their own kind of animal I think. Activating it in create can cause all kinds of problems. Replace it and you should be back in business then.2010-02-11 20:33:00

Ahh so in essence it fired it One Shot already. Wow.. that is weird.

I have an analogy about your sticker switch, but ummm it's an E site afterall.

Yep, sticker switches have been bugged for ages, but very few people use them, so it goes unnoticed. Basically, the take away message is that sticker switches are evil, and cannot be trusted.

I like to think of sticker switches like water molecules and other switches like air molecules, they act different! Okay sorry that was a bad example.

Yeah you have to make sure they don't get activated when set to one-shot in create. They are kinda like emitters when they are set to emit one and in create it emits.

Well until Mm decide to release a corner edit tool for stickers, I don't think we'll be seeing a huge use of sticker switches.

I used one in my latest level with the LBPC sticker to unlock a secret area. I always like using the LBPC sticker somewhere in my level.

Anyways good to know about that bug. I think I've always used them as directional and never one-shot but I'll be careful from here on out.

Remember the switch can activate if the sticker is put on anything it's glued to too. (If you didn't know that.)2010-02-11 22:49:00

Really? I had no idea.. Always thought that stickers-switches were buggy, and unreliable, but this sort some of my problems.
That's kinda stupid i must say...

But thanks for enlightening me.

Does it respond to things that are attached by other connectors too? like bolts, string, piston etc. etc.?

Has anybody experimented to see what exactly sticker switches are capable of? Like, if you set it to one-shot a flipper, can it be triggered multiple times like a paintswitch, or is it only good once? I've had times where a directional sticker switch can be deactivated by removing the sticker, but it seems like other times, removing the sticker doesn't deactivate it.

I kind of like using sticker switches in a unique way. For instance, I had one project I was working on (may or may not ever get back to it) with a mother nature character wearing a bunch of leaf decorations. I planned to set up sticker switches that would react if the player "undressed" her with the sticker tool and would flood the whole level with gas (that's what you get for being a perv, perv!) The level wasn't going to give any kind of warning or hint that it was possible: it was only meant as a penalty. You also die if you try to jump on her chest (which was also not going to be advertised). Mother nature has a "death to all perverts" policy.

On a similar note, if that idea works, you could use it to prevent "sticker stealing" in levels. As soon as a sticker is removed, flood the area with gas and the player won't have time to slap the sticker on himself.

They can be activated using a one-shot setting multiple times.

The major problem with them is that if you delete a sticker with the triangle button, the switch fails to recognize. Your little undressing penalty, thusly, has a workaround. I've only use a sticker switch once, and it was used through a PERM switch, so there wasn't much that it could screw up.

Huh. I never knew you could just hover the sticker tool over a sticker and hit triangle to delete it. Makes cleaning off stickers a lot quicker.

Well, I guess purvs could undress mother nature with impunity. Oh well. Wasn't a major concern: just something I thought was kind of funny. It would still prevent sticker stealing, though. Triangle deletes the sticker so you don't get to steal it, and if you lift it off the surface, it can trigger the switch and emit gas to kill the player (which will make the sticker tool close). I can't think of any occasions where I put a sticker in a level that I was especially worried about people stealing, but I'm sure there are people who care more about that kind of thing than me.

I'd have to check, but I'm pretty sure you can't actually prevent sticker theft in this manner. You can only trigger a sticker switch (either placing or removing), if the sticker is in your popit (i.e. the only people that can't steal it are those that already have it )2010-02-14 11:57:00
