so tell me what scares you?

I'm making a level based on a Japanese village and I need some ideas.
so far I got inspired by fatal frame and the grudge.

so any ideas for some good scares?

The Grudge? My level 'Dead Memories' was inspired by this.

As for scares. Intense chase sequences that make the player fumble around with the controller are always win. Quick, almost subliminal glimpses of a creatures scammering off, sounds and lighting effects used in the right way can create a feeling of unease that'll hopefully last the entire level.

High pitched screeching if possible? (Not that eerie sound thing- it's not that scary) Very DarkLighting?? Oh! Brainstorm. Make the screen pitch black- but a dude with a torch who walks with you, partially iluminating you and the guy, but something like a wobble bolt and time your creations so that it catches glimpses of them... and then he gets infected by a virus! oOoOoOoO good luck2010-02-09 22:39:00

well spectral fear had a lot of that.

hmm I got one chase thing like that rose.. and it scared even me... I forgot about it while I was test playing lol.

umm any other ideas?

Im making it a one chance thing. if you get cuaght by the creatures your dead and its game over.

so i need things that grab you :-P

Not to hijack your thread but checkout 'Dead Memories' it might give you a bit of inspiration for scares. I use a few fairly new concepts.

Film like The Grudge, The Ring etc should give you plenty of ideas for scares. Trick the player into thinking something is going to happen aswell. So hopefully they'll have their guard down when the actual scare comes along.

I would recommend NOT starting the level off scary. This is a thing I've noticed in a lot of "horror" levels - as soon as you're dropped in, you find yourself in some hostile, freaky landscape with intense lighting and dangerous shadows. The thing is, where do you go from there? I think you have a better chance of being scary if you INCREASE the tension and level of freakiness over time. Start with something somewhat safe and mundane, and transition into the scary stuff from there.

One thing I find really scary is to give the player something that makes them feel warm and safe and sheltered - and then either take it away from them or make them have to leave it somehow. I'll give you an example from one of my own levels - in "The Legend of the Deep One", you're out to search for a giant, legendary deep-sea monster. You climb into your boat and take it out into the sea, in the middle of an intense storm where you find the buoy where you have to dive. Rain is slamming the sea, lightning and thunder crash everywhere - but your boat is a comfy little safe zone, with beds, warm lights, and even a tv. The moment where you have to jump out and into the deadly, deep sea, knowing there's some massive beast lurking below, is an example of this type of transition.

Keep in mind that players may be coming off of "ice cream heaven 2.0", or "fluffy happy gumdrop land". Dropping them immediately into your creepiest of creepiness may not have the intended result.

i tried making a scary level, it's tougher than you'd think. but here some tricks that i used...

1. if you're in a scary looking room, and you know there are some sort of zombies or creatures around, have a panel of wood, or something like that fall down in the dark, making them think it was somethng else.

2. make the screen pitch black at one point, and give them a torch/flashlight, and have the flashlight work where only if there are NO key switches, that it'll burn/light up. that way, you can ad suspense as to where the light might possibly burn out, and when it turns back on, a skeleton, or zombie, or creature shows up at thier face.

3. block off the entrance to any nirvana once they have left it! (nirvana is a safe spot in the level where you feel safe. e.g. the tram station on Dead Space) that way, they can't go running back inside!

Horror levels done right are the hardest thing to make imo. Anybody can turn down the lighting, put a scream sound down and a couple blood splats. Teebonesy gives good advice, start slow and ramp up the creepy as you go. Another tip, dont use music at all, instead rely heavily on sounds.2010-02-23 01:18:00

How bout your with your friend in a jeep in Japan, and it randomly stops working. You see buildings in the distance, and decide to go get some help. But you soon realize, this isn't any village.

There could be aliens in it. You could have times when you are outside, and catch glimpses on lights in the sky. Aliens just creep me out, and when I'm in bed and the X-Files theme pops into my head, I just freak out. So basically, an alien infested village. :3

Make sure there isn't too much darkness in the level, if there is too much, it can frustrate the player. You should also consider that when your building a dark level, some people might not have televisions that are bright as the one you may be using. So something that may appear well lit could be too dark on other TV screens, you could try to warn the player in the beginning to turn up screen brightness.2010-02-23 04:36:00

Ummm I got in basically built just trying to figure out ending ummm you start out in a bamboo forest trail next to a sign that tells you about a old village that used to be there.:-P

and I know warlord. I like it completely black tho but I make sure to put pleantly of lights in the level. how ever its easiest to see when playing in the dark at night. not to mention scarier XD

I know that the lighting between standard tv and hd are diffrent. Im working on a standard . I think ill switch it to a hd tv for final lighting adjustments would that be a good thing to do warlord?

One thing I've noticed that is consistent with the levels I find scariest on LBP is camera mangement. Take a note from horror film makers and use quick cuts, sudden movement and awkward angles to raise tension or create a single moment of heart jumping panic... very effective. Keep in mind you can play people emotions however you want, you just have to know how to hit the notes (metaphorically speaking)2010-02-23 23:58:00

Drowning is kinda scary, if possible I think you should make a scene where the player barily gets to breathe again. Make a timer on 30 seconds (or actually 28 or so) so that the player doesn't seem to have a way to survive, bam, something happens and you survive until the next scary part.2010-02-24 00:34:00

I got cut off before i could finish giving my impressions I still wanna play through again to get the other ending as well. Some feedback.

-I like the look of the level, very ominous. It seemed like the house from the grudge.
-I like the ghost character you had at the end, looked very good, it looks exactly like the girl from the ring/grudge.
-I liked how you sorta had to explore a bit to find the next section, but at some points, especially with younger players there needs to be a lil direction. Perhaps when a door opens or a new way opens you could add a magic mouth go off and show you that room?
-To add on the last thing, at some points i was actually right at the door i needed to go, but didnt know it because i needed to jump and i was standing there grabbing for a door. Add a ramp or something like you said earlier and this is no problem.
- One thing i was a little disappointed with is i thought there was a little lack of creepy. I thought it was just the build up at first, and then when the ghosts started appearing and i thought you were gonna pour it on, and then the level ended 5 seconds later. A majority of the level, in essense, was walking around a dark house with a couple puzzles.

I thought it was a good level all in all though, as it stands it would be 4 stars regardless of the above.

EDIT-Also, at the start i coulda SWORE that when you were by the wicker tree and the lights went out they were gonna come back on and people would be hanging from it with some blood, to add to the effect of the story. I would consider that.
