YLOD or data corruption?

Archive: 38 posts

I need some technical help, guys. I'm worried here

Ok, so I fire up my PS3 from its usual state of red-light off position, but when I go to the Game Data section where I would fire up LBP, the disc icon was not there, and restarting the system didn't solve the problem. When the PS3 is on, I notice a little yellow light blinking, but that's just the light with the battery icon over it, meaning that there's power flowing. Still, even after I pop in a different game disc, the system still will not read it. I can still turn my system on and off, but it refuses to read discs.

Chuck_18mp says that I should probably grab what info off the system I can before I actually get the YLOD, and I agree all too heartily. I just hope I can pull everything off before the system actually crashes, or I'll have to start LBP all over again, with no 100% completion, no DLC, and especially no My Objects T_T

I think the problem may be due to the fact that, like a complete moron, I turned off my system while there was the standard "running sackboy on a globe" icon with the words "Do not turn off your system..." blah blah blah. That was only out of impatience because I was in limbo for much longer than usual while waiting to join someone. I've been able to continue playing LBP after ignoring that warning message (at least for a while), but only now am I having this problem.

If there's anyone out there who can offer advice, please give it D:

Wow.. so sorry to hear that.

It would definately be a good idea to get some backups off the PS3. Not only profile, but any levels. Possibly keeping incremental ones, just in case if you then restore that the most current you had was bad. You might also consider plopping anything captured in your popit menu into a level as well, backup and save that off too.

Not sure what your issue is, but is it possible that there is just something flaky with the blu-ray player? Just doesn't seem to be recognizing discs. You might try a blu-ray movie just for fun as I am betting it won't play either.

I was thinking there was a tutorial on how to take apart and blow off the lens somewhere here which may fix your issue.

Good luck!

That's the thing, though. I can't even get into LBP to back up my levels :C The PS3 refuses to read the disc. But it could very well be that my system is dusty...I hope that's the only problem...2010-02-06 05:32:00

Oh yeah.. sorry. Well you can still pull what you do have backed up off. Better than nothing I'm afraid.

Here is the thread I was thinking of, but it doesn't mention the blu-ray portion. You may have to start googling and see what you find.

I would think that is what it is.. or at least something to do with the blu-ray player. What model ps3 do you have?

Good luck!

Thats the HDD access indicator its normal for it to flash yellow.

The YLOD is below the on/off button (I/O)

Based on your description, it's not a YLOD, at least not yet anyways. I agree it sounds like your blu-ray laser is dirty or broken. You might try a lens cleaning CD, but I would check the PS3 manual before doing so to make sure thats ok to do.

I had my PS3 freeze in the middle of sackboy running on the globe, forcing me to power off. I haven't experienced data corruption as a result. I think it's pretty rare these days for that to happen.

It's definetely a hardware problem. You can try to clean the PS3 but then again, when it completely stops reading, it seems to be a more important hardware problem. Call Sony.2010-02-06 16:16:00

@Thegide: Does that cleaning CD come with the PS3 or do you have to go somewhere to buy one? A Sony-provided repair apparently costs $150, no questions asked.

@RangerZero: So if I were to clean my Blu-ray and discs still don't register, then I've got bigger problems. Got it

i agree with Rabid-Coot "Thats the HDD access indicator its normal for it to flash yellow."
i guess you will have to backup all your game data.. then send it to sony

Well I think that your Blu-Ray is probaly not working, it is possible to get that fixed without sending it to sony. Have you triede the Geek Squad( not sure if i have the name right) i think they can fix Blu-Ray players. If you send it to sony you will end up waiting i think its 90 daays till yoiu can play again on the PS3. If you can wait that long without playing or have a 360 or a Wii go ahead if not i suggest the geek squad thing or buy a PS3 Slim

PS, Back up all your data on to an external HDD

Hope this helped

@Emogotsaone: I got my PS3 as a Christmas gift in the same year that Assassin's Creed 1 came out, so that's 3 years ago. I doubt the warranty is valid anymore.

@Morgana25: I knooooww :C I miss you, too...But no, even after blowing out all the dust in the system and using a lens-cleaning disc, my PS3 will not read any disc I put into it, LBP or otherwise. At least slim PS3's are only $300, so it won't be that big of an expenditure to buy a new one. Just need to get the data off the old one...I just hope that if I back up my profile to a USB stick, my levels will be included in said back up I'd be devastated to lose all that hard work and research.

@anyone else reading this: Do you know if levels are included in a profile back-up, or do levels have to be backed up individually to be moved onto another PS3?
Please help D:

Sorry that the lens cleaning didn't work.

If you backup your profile to a USB, that should be everything at that point in time. The game will yell at you though about not getting more trophies and you using a backup. At least it does that to me on an alternate account. Not sure if there is a way around that or not.

Good luck!

@jww: Wait, what? It'll yell at me for not having more trophies and using a backup? You mean, like an error message? 2010-02-10 23:48:00

LOL...

Yes an error message when you arrive in your pod saying that you cannot earn any more trophies as well as you are using a backup.

I've never worried about the trophies personally.. One thing that April just reminded me of.. When we got the 2nd PS3, we took a backup of her profile and loaded on the new one. For awhile it gave her the huge message, but she told me now it doesn't do that and can still get trophies. So I dunno... Not sure if Leerdammer did it or what as we got the 2nd one awhile ago.. Like July or August.2010-02-11 02:02:00

Well, the way I see it, the Create Trophy, in particular, shows how far you've come since getting the game. I've been looking forward to getting it for a while now ^_^;

But if Leerdammer fixed the trophy issue, then yay

Well.. I dunno. What I was meaning was that when we restored it was pre Leerdammer. So it also may have been the conversion process. Not really sure. I was thinking there were a few other threads somewhere or possibly just out via google on restoring an LBP profile and all the extra information that might be helpful.2010-02-11 02:13:00

As far as the MediaMolecule video suggests, it just takes backing up the profile to a USB stick and downloading that data to the new system. Twelve-gig sticks aren't terribly expensive...

But if April's restored profile was pre-Leerdammer, then after Leerdammer she could get trophies again, then that would indicate that the patch fixed the trophy error message...or you could be right, it could be the conversion method. Did you use USB sticks to restore her profile?

Anyway, it looks like I may be getting a slim PS3 in the not-too-distant future, and if there's anyone who could tell me if levels, objects and DLC will carry over in a profile move, I'd be very grateful 2010-02-16 02:40:00

Sorry to hear about your trouble. I know just how you feel because my PS3 died a couple of weeks ago. I think mine was the YLOD because it wouldn't even switch on again. I couldn't even get the LBP disc out and have had to buy another.

Unfortunately I can't help you much as I couldn't back any of my data up because as I say it wouldn't even come on. All I had was my LBP profile saved on memory stick which i managed to install on the new PS3.

You should be luckier than me though because at least yours switches on so you should be able to back up the complete hard drive to another PS3 when you get one. The option to do that came with the last firmware update I believe. I'm not sure if you can just hook up one PS3 to the other and if so what sort of cable you'd need. I would imagine so because if not you'd need a hell of alot of memory cards to back up the entire hard drive. Someone more tech minded than me will have to advise you on that one.

Hope you get it sorted asap. Good luck.

Oh, I didn't saw that thread before..!

I had the same problem apparently, twice, two days ago, but in my case I manage to make it work... for now!
It's not the YLOD but the error 80010514, a problem of corruption of game disc recognition and execution

I was going to make a thread for this, as it's a special problem (theres some ponctual solutions to it)
and because I wanted to know if anyone experienced this...

Is it ok if I make a special thread for this..?

@dajdaj03: If your problem is distinct from mine, then go ahead and make another thread.

Also, if you have any advice for me on what to do (barring having to buy a slim PS3), I would really appreciate it

Yes The levels are provied in the profile backup. its like the back in day (manual) backups we did before Leerdamer. So don't worry about your levels they come with.2010-02-16 03:38:00

In theory, couldn't you use a two way usb cable between the two? I'm not sure that would work, but it would connect their data ports...I'm just not sure how the PS3 would read the OTHER PS3.

I'd do what everyone else is saying...back up your hard drive now, in the event the YLOD hasn't claimed it yet.

I don't know a whole lot about the hardware side of the ps3...but I hope I was able to help!

Im really sorry for you there man, that bites. And how do you obtain this yellow light of death? Are there any certain precautions? Just wondering cause i dont want to buy a new PS3...

With a new PS3, you will have to download the DLC again from the store. Not the one in LBP. There is something like a "downloaded" selection up above to the right in the store that will list all the DLC you have purchased. Just pull all that down first before firing up LBP and then any saved costumes for example with the DLC will be available via the profile you pulled over.

Not sure if there's anything specific, but just take the same precautions you would with any other hi-tech electronic. Keep it well ventilated (sticking it in a small glass cabinet and keeping the door closed is a very bad idea). You might even want to prop it up on something to allow airflow underneath it (this will also help if your ps3 has a lot of fan noise: better airflow means the fan doesn't have to work as hard=less noise). Clean the dust from the vent holes occasionally: I like to take the hose attachment of the vacuum to my ps3 about once a month (I live in a VERY dusty area). You may want to get one of those cans of compressed air and shoot it into your ps3 every so often, too.

The ps3's biggest weakness (as far as I can see) is heat. It's a very hot machine. So you want to do everything you can to make sure it can disperse that heat as much as possible (setting it on top of a hot stereo or tv or where the sun can shine directly on it would also be a very bad idea). Mine seems to run especially hot. Sometimes, it'll get really noisy and I have to open the window to let some cold air in so it can cool down.
