Uses for glass...?

Archive: 24 posts

Other than slippery platforms... Is there anything else you can do with glass?

I'm currently creating an Arctic level type thing, and i'm a bit stuck with obstacles.

Any ideas?

You may have thought of some of these, but off the top of my head...

It would make one wicked slippery and yet floaty platform in water. Though might be a stretch depending on HOW far north your Arctic adventure is. As ice cubes, they might make for an interesting obstacle on an ascent up some platforms if they slide off a high glacier (mini ramps on both sides so to speak) in your path as you go up. Either knocking you off down below to start over or into a danger below. Maybe just killing you if you they hit you by rigging them with some surrounding gas. Another thought is dropping icicles to spear you on a horizontal section that has an overhang above.

Keep us posted sounds like an interesting level!

Glass is excellent when you need to worry about friction. Generally, any time you need to slide something across another surface, having a thin layer of glass or making one component entirely out of glass works well. I've used glass for reducing friction in conveyors, for making heavy objects moveable without using wheels, in logic devices, and in creating structures that expand or collapse into themselves.

I've never used glass as a slippery surface for platforms, because I think it's generally frustrating for players, unless the effect is a deliberate ice slide.

For an arctic level, ice makes great icicles and can be used decoratively. It would be good to use on the bottom of a sled (because of its frictionless properties). You could make obstacles that involve things sliding across an ice floor that you have to hop on (but don't make their surfaces ice... it would be frustrating to land on).

There arn't many windows in the Arctic!, Nor many Glass men

I'll post some piccies so you guys can get the idea of the actic-ness of the level

Oh, and some great ideas coming in! Thanks!

Two tips: A whale's eye is located near the corner of the mouth, not the tip of the nose. And iceberg is spelled iceberg.

As to ideas, I think those shelters from the MGS pack would make a great arctic research camp.

I'm a huge advocate of using reference images when creating real world objects in LBP:

They are there to be used. They just need to be put into good use and that's where most people fail. Of course you are not most people.

You can place mammoths behind (or inside glass) to pretend they are frozen in ice.

If you attach a some grabable material to the iceberg players could move it into position to reach a ledge.

Oh yeah, I wanted to mention the missing uro-genital slit, too. But I forgot.

I don't know about most people, but I don't think using Mm sculpted objects is bad if they fit the level. I'm talking about the ones you can't make yourselves, like the balls, fruit and the wooden mask. The ones built from available materials, like the giraffe, those I don't see myself using any time soon.

EDIT: Oh, mammoth popsicle, good idea! And you could have the player bring some fire to melt it out.

Dude, how can you even call it a whale without a urogenital slit?!?

Generally when people shun Mm objects, they aren't referring to the sculpted objects, but rather those than could be recreated using the existing tools (i.e. contraptions and story characters).

Great idea with the mammoth!

I was already planning to put a frozen UFO in there somewhere too.

Oh, by the way, the level is called...

With water below so you can swim if you dont make it.... A race would also be good in that section..

C'mon JWW you're suppose to be the helpful sort... not give bad advice!!! The obstacles you describe would net a total response of exactly "1" if a 'level' were to 'showcase' them. Thank You however for describing...

:blush:oh yeah community, it's a touchy subject .

As to the question at hand... glass (ice) is a beautiful and challenging building material, I am sure you will make the most of it. don't mean to spam your thread but...

Also I disagree with the use of Mm pre-made objects. There is nothing wrong with using them creatively. The negative undertones arise from those levels and creators who key ingredient is laziness rather than i-m-a-g-i-n-a-t-i-o-n-!

lol... well, I did preface it by saying "off the top of my head". That in itself tends to be a warning sign for those that know me.
