Glitch Delema

Archive: 17 posts

So I've hit another lil roadblock in my creating.

Though this is more of an opinion problem than a technical one.
A friend I was playing online with recently discovered a glitch I'd never seen before.
(though idk how he did it... )

Im considering making use of it in one of my levels. (He was nice enough to give me a copy.)

My question is simply:what are your thoughts on using a glitch at all?
Ive never knowingly placed a glitch in my levels until now..
But having since experimented with this & even the ever-famous 3d glitch I have to say it would
most certainly help to use them..

Ive looked around online everywhere I could think but Ive yet to see MM take any real stance on anything regarding glitches...idk what that says...

So far, Mm has patched glitches to prevent us from creating them, but left all of the existing ones intact. You can't create a floaty material that looks like stone any more, but if you already have a piece of floaty stone, you can still use it and any levels that use it still work. While I'd obviously prefer they not patch the glitches at all, I think this is the perfect way of handling it.

So go ahead and use the glitch. I'd say it's about 95%t sure that it'll be fine.

I totally encourage the use of the glitches if you apply them well, as the poll's second option suggests.

For instance, what good would do having a random "3d 50 layered rectangle" scattered in your level, as it will have no positive influence or (and) has nothing to do with the level? It is like the usual "H4H, Bomb Water Survival, etc" person who learns how to "open the popit, select a 3d layer object, press CIRCLE, choose a material and draw random senseless crap" and add it in their level, getting conceited "U SUCKZ. LIEK, I HAS 3d LOL!!!1111oneoneoen mah bombz soorvivahl is dah elite nowz, h4h!

Also, I think that using glitches as safe as possible can be considered part of this "If done well" option, because recently I had a graphical problem during Create and Play Mode in my level which used 3d Layer. In some parts of the level, the screen would be tainted with a huge blur until you leave that part, the area seemed to be overloaded with 3d glitch, and I deleted some 3d stuff in excess and it seemed to solve this problem.

The plasmified object glitch and invisible matter glitch are my personal faves. In fact, invisible matter should be a staple food of any serious creator...so many useful applications that it would take me until christmas to list 'em all.2010-02-05 21:00:00

It took me quite a while to embrace the whole glitch phenomenon too. Started with Glitched Glass and I've worked up to using the 3d/bakscratch glitch in my levels now. I don't have a problem with people using them, in fact some levels are even better because of them. I tend to not like glitch levels that just show off the particular glitch though. So if your going to use a glitched material or exploit another glitch I'd say my rule of thumb is if what your doing in the level would be better using the glitch - then use it. If your using it just for the sake of using it maybe reconsider.2010-02-05 21:04:00

i'm not sure either. i would not use the 3D layer glitch although it does look great and can add depth to any level. i do use the invisible matter glitch. i couldn't live without it. glass sponge looks great and i would definitely use it. some glitches though are useless, like the mirror glitch. it looks awful on most materials and it just looks glitchy and nasty. but you don't have to use glitches to be a good creator. look at MM's levels. no glitches and they are great!

sorry. went all preachy.

Wow-this tread is going a lot better than I anticipated.
Thank you all for your replies!
Very helpful.I think Ive just about made my decision, though I may
sit back & see if anyone else votes.

(Feel free to keep voting even if I make up my mind though-I'm sure there are plenty
of others who could use one more opinion. )

looks like you REALLY dont know how to discover glitches
you hav 0,0001% of chance per day to found one
if the mirror glitch isnt there, you dont have a really good ground, like one of a palace
or Limesta, for example, dont get the mirror of his level

also THERE'S NO PERFECT GLITCHES
like the 3D glitch, you cant put a thin object in the front of a 3D glitch maded background
also every glitch is glitchy O.o
bcuz every glitch is a glitch

and yes, Mm DID use things in 3D, like the first level of lbp (not first steps, and yes the REALLY first level...the intro)
at the end of the lvl, they maked the LittleBigPlanet logo at the layer that we cant place things without glitches

im not going to use bad words here, im just saying to you that isnt easy to found glitches, ok??
watch you mouth. if you dont know a thing dont say it

I think glitches have there place in LBP, especially the layers glitch. I think glitchs are just a way to add more detail, just accidentaily. What if MM doesn't patch anything? Then were screwed.2010-02-09 03:06:00

woah! calm down. firstly, i do know a thing. secondly, i only meant that idon't see any use for the mirror glitch. i just thought it looked jumpy and weird and only on some materials. glass looks good. didn't mean to offend you.

glitchy was probably the wrong word to use. i meant it didn't look right. all im trying to say is you don't need to use glitches to be a good creator, that's all. i respect those who find glitches but i don't want to find one myself.

MM probably didn't use the layer glitch just stuck it in the background. they also put font in the intro and they use stickers and materials that we can't. but their story levels are brilliant and they don't use glitches.

ok, but Mm did use an invisible material, like, if you go to the final video of the level, and you try 2 go right, you will touch a invisible matter
and you didnt see much uses of the glitch because it is a really new glitch...it was discovered was 1 week
im calm down now

MM did not use any glitches at all in there levels! They just get a few extra things we don't. I think if they used a glitch in there level they either would have patched it or made it an official tool/object/material/thing.

You guys forget that Mm don't use the LBP level editor for creating levels, but rather PCs running beefed up editors. I'm sure they can place whatever they want wherever they want and don't need any glitches to do it.2010-02-10 18:04:00

yeah. they can put whatever they like in the levels, like the info boards in the tutorials.
