Strikewing (LBPC Online Create Contest Entry) beta testing

Archive: 4 posts

Hey everyone, we're looking for some feedback and testing on our upcoming level.

Level name: Strikewing: Operation Starshock [BETA]
PSN: Jirugameshi

Strikewing is a side-scrolling shooter level featuring powerups, multiple weapons, varied enemies and a plane that can transform into 3 different modes. The level is meant for a single-player experience, but having additional players will not break the level, instead the extra players simply become spectators.

For now only Stage 1 is available to play, but we are planning on having Stage 2 completed by the deadline of the contest and will be adding more stages afterward if the thermo allows it. This may even become a level series if it's well received.

Please report any anomalies, bugs or suggestions here and we'll try to address the issues. Thank you for everyone who decides to help out!

OK... I played this several times (in addition to the little preview you gave me in your pod the other night), and here's my thoughts:

Pros:
+ Excellent design. You truly are the mech guru. I love the transformer's transformation.
+ Cool game mechanics.
+ Innovative style (monster / enemy designs)
+ The HUD is fantastic!

Cons:

- The side scrolling is hard to deal with sometimes. I know you scolded me the other night, "...it's better if you don't run into things..." but sometimes it just doesn't seem to react quickly enough to avoid it.

- I wish I could back up more or slow down. I know that some of this is a factor of the perpetual scrolling backdrops, and I'm guessing some of it is by design (I don't know... is this an original design/concept or is this based of an old school 2D side-scroller? I've never heard of Strikewing, but that's not saying much... never was much of a gamer).

- I had a level breaker on about my 4th or 5th play. I once again ran into some enemies (the little guys that sort of flock together), just before the big (final?? I dunno I never got past him) boss. And suddenly my mech just went to pieces. But I was still flying and I still had life remaining in my health bar:

And then I was stuck in an infinite loop on this guy, while he shot up at the sky/ceiling:

Overall, I'd say it looks really cool. Ideally, the mechanics are good, but in practice, they seem a bit slow to respond and this gets sort of frustrating. I love the visuals.

Hope this was helpful. 4 :star:s and tagged Horizontal

Thanks for the feedback!

I'm not sure what you mean by back up more though, do you mean that the ship doesn't go back far enough? It can't go past the edge of the screen otherwise you wouldn't be able to see it anymore, but I have an SDTV so I'm not sure how much further back it could go.

I'm probably going to have to change the ship's material to something stronger to handle the speed increase anyway, so that might solve this issue.

EDIT: I've republished the level with the following fixes:

The ship can now move further back and further forward.
The ship now moves much faster.
Part of the ship is made of indestructible material to keep from being broken by collisions and to handle the bigger speed stress.
