A Question of Thermo.

Archive: 4 posts

Hey everyone, after lurking around and playing some amazing levels, I finally decided to join. With this joining, I feel that I should not start actually creating some of my own levels. As I am sure many of you know, this opens a whole new can of worms and can be quite life consuming.

As my first project, I am setting my sights high and will begin working on my multi-level epic. I know, I know, a little ambitious right, but I am going into this thing knowing that I will probably have to take many breaks, create smaller levels to test out ideas that will go into my epic LBP adventure of awesomeness, and probably have to destroy everything and start over more times than I can count (I have dabbled in create before but never finished anything, I did make some pretty boss contraptions, heres to hoping I can actually finish something!).

Now, I know very little about the thermometer. I have read Heckboy's Thermometer Studies over on LittleBigWorkshop, and I probably read some guide on thermometer usage here too, I just can't find it right now (if anyone knows of a guide or FAQ on thermometer effects here and could point me to it that would be great!). My biggest worry is, obviously, the level overheating. In my project, I will have a number of meanies, all different shapes, sizes, and styles, and I know enemies can be very taxing on the thermo, especially large-scale bosses with intricate logic networks.

My question (finally!) is, when constructing enemies, should one construct them entirely out of basic materials, such as wood or cardboard, and then sticker the individual pieces to look like other materials? Or does one prefer to just go ahead and use various materials to make the enemies? I am trying to make these things look somewhat... contextually organic... in the sense that they don't look to different from the settings they are in, so they will most likely be conceptually/artistically driven and highly detailed (I am trying to achieve a feeling of the old monsters from the 8 and 16-bit days, not actual sprites, but that level of inspiration and detail)

So tl;dr, which is more thermo-friendly? Stickers to simulate materials, or the actual materials themselves?

Thanks!
Ps: I am sure I will have many more questions about the whole creation process as this thing gets rolling. I am really looking forward to working with everyone here!

In short, stickering is the more thermo friendly solution usually. I find with complex bosses in particular (lots of moving parts), pistons and bolts often don't work properly when heavier materials are used (i.e. metal, stone). In these cases, I usually build my mechs and such out of styro, cardboard, or dissolve, then sticker them to look like different textures.

My megaboss in Shadow Moses would not have been possible using the real deal materials themselves.

Sticker can work very well, though bear in mind the fact there are several different thermos. If it say you have too many stickers, you might still be able to add more matierials, corners etc.2010-02-04 15:47:00
